Customer Review: Guiness vs. Gielgud
I meant to get the version narrated by Sir John Gielgud not Sir Alec Guiness, but this version of Peter and the Wolf is ok. I'm not sure why the wolf must be "saved" and taken to the zoo however; I much prefer the original story, as Gielgud tells it (if I'm not mistaken). Gielgud seems to have better timing when telling the story than Guiness and the orchestra sounds zippier, for lack of a better classical term. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time tracking down the Gielgud version on Amazon.
Customer Review: Classics For Children/Fielder,Boston Pops
I have been searching for this for YEARS! My Mom got this for me when I was a child(on 8-track!)under a different title and with a different cover. I am a musician and this collection was definitely a big influence on me...I don't think my Mom knew what good she was doing when she got this for me! And I never realized until now that it was Sir Alec Guiness on this album! I am a big Star Wars fan, and this collection really brings things full circle for me! I'm buying this right now! This is a great way to introduce children to music other than Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. THANK YOU, Amazon, for having this treasured memory in stock!

Classic Bluegrass Banjo Solos

Classic Bluegrass Banjo Solos
Tony Trischka teaches eleven classic pieces that are prime examples of banjo playing at its best. You'll learn them, note-for-note, just as they were played by some of the greatest players in the history of the instrument. By learning these tunes you'll not only expand your repertoire, but in the process will also become more flexible in your ability to mix up various rolls, play in several keys without a capo and move more freely around the neck.

Tony, who is widely known as one of the world's top contemporary banjo players as well as a historian of banjo lore, performs each tune with the help of John McGann on guitar. He then slows it down, going over the tricky spots and explaining all the right and left hand techniques you'll need to play it.

Here are the solos you'll learn: John Henry (Earl Scruggs), Sitting on Top of the World (Alan Shelton), Gold Rush (Vic Jordan), Bye Bye Blues (Alan Shelton), Dixie Breakdown (Don Reno), Old Home Place (J. D. Crowe), Salt Creek (Bill Keith), Casey Jones (Bobby Thompson), Clinch Mountain Backstep (Ralph Stanley), Little Maggie (Bill Emerson), Doug's Tune (Doug Dillard).

Classic Blues Guitar

Classic Blues Guitar
Customer Review: Basic education
I have viewed this whole DVD, along with the "special features" section. The description provided above is not quite accurate. First, this DVD is hosted by Keith Wyatt, who is so far my favorite video guitar teacher. This makes the DVD great in that aspect. Next, the DVD is a guide into the various types of electric guitars and amplifiers. Keith provides a solid overview and a little history to the guitars, who used what ones and what amplifiers were used with what guitars. He does a good job comparing the differences. Third, this is NOT an instructional DVD as far as actually playing the guitar (which I thought it would be). Regardless, I feel for the novice guitarist this is a great DVD to understand the differences in guitars and amps. Keith details the history and why some chose "this one" over "that one". There are some special features that are neat, like a short clip of BB King and how you create distortion from an amplifier. All in all this was fun and informative to watch. It probably only takes one viewing to get the just of everything. After that you should be able to figure everything out on your own. I like this DVD and think everyone should take a gander. To be a "true" guitarist you need more than effects pedals. This DVD will give you the insight to help you.

Customer Review: Not really Christmas
These movies aren't all really Christmas but they are a good watch and a fair price.
Customer Review: Great Movies with Superb Extras on all but the Singing Nun
This is a great dvd collection with plenty of extras. For me the extras add so much to a movie. Since all of these movies have been around for a while I just want to make some comments about the extras. Boys Town Unlike a previous reviewer my copy of Boys Town came with some great extras. The disk is double sided with the one side having Boys Town and the second including the less successful sequel Men of Boys Town also starring Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy. Other features include the featurette "The City of Little Men" which is a 10:56 long and includes Father Flanagan. "Girls and Boys Town" is a 2:07 look at the modern Boys and Girls Town. There is also and excerpt from "Good News of 1939" which is a 16:42 long radio broadcast with Tracy and Rooney in excerpts from the movie. This is sound only with no video. Also included are theatrical trailers from both movies. Christmas in Connecticut This includes a superb Oscar winning short called "Star in the Night" which is 21:24 long. It is a modern story about a man and his pregnant wife who stop at an inn on Christmas evening only to find that it is full. Included in the movie, set in the southwest of the United States, are three wise cowboys attracted to a star at a gasoline station at the inn. It is a great story and highly recommended. Also included is a theatrical trailer for the movie. A Christmas Carol This includes a number of great extras aside from the theatrical trailer. It includes "Jackie Cooper's Christmas Party" a 9:00 long featurette in which Jackie Cooper convinces the Metro Goldwyn Mayer studio to have a Christmas party for his football team and the servers include some well known stars of the time. There is a brief 1:41 film of Judy Garland singing "Silent Night" in front of a church choir. Finally there is an Oscar nominated cartoon called "Peace on Earth" which 8:47 long. This is the one feature I was troubled about. It is a cartoon that takes place after mankind has destroyed itself in a World War and the animals are the only ones left on the earth to sing holiday songs. While it makes a good statement about the dangers of war it is something that may trouble youngsters. Singing Nun Finally, there is the Singing Nun which includes a theatrical trailer. Importantly the movie does not include any chapters so if you want to skip to Debbie Reynolds singing Dominique you have to fast forward or use what ever chapter feature you have on your dvd player. This is the only disappointment in this great set of movies. The movie is fine but I like chapters on my dvd's. This is a great set that is well worth the price. It is a treasured part of my Christmas movie collection.

Django,1966,a Sergio Corbucci film, starring,Franco Nero, delivers all the spaghetti western goods, actually banned in several countries proceeding after the films debut for it's extreme violence. A stranger shows up in a rundown town, dragging along his personal coffin, with a deadly .44 on his hip, looking for revenge, targeting a band of ruthless outlaws, led by a man called Col. Jackson. Classic Rock Guitar Soloing - Barrett Tagliarino

Classic Rock Guitar Soloing - Barrett Tagliarino
Customer Review: Not very useful
This dvd was a letdown not only was it short but it lacked substance. This guy has a strange vibe and talks too much about solos being like conversations and that if you "talked all at once" you would not be heard.....really? wow thanks for the hot tip!. There is little time spent on useful scales(other than the same old tripe) and current rock and blues solo structure is left out completely. He does play one or two recognizable licks like the solo from Rod Stewarts Maggie May but any second year player could do better than that. You would be far better of to learn from Danny Gill,Stuart Bull,Jammie Huphries or Greg Koch if you want real meat and taters.Look around first before you buy this Duck!!. Never on Sunday: Classic Movie Music of the 50's & 60's

Never on Sunday: Classic Movie Music of the 50's & 60's
Customer Review: A Tribute to Don Costa
The CD collection of some of Don Costa's songs are nice but is only a small sample of his works. In the early sixties I bought his ABC Paramount record of "Don Costa conducts his 15 hits". I bought it by accident because it was cheap. I was truely impressed with his music and the songs stayed in my head for years. This album hasn't made it to CD but hopefully it will some day. When I re-bouught the record, I didn't know it was made in 1957. To me it shows Don Costa's music is timeless. Too much of his music is still in the vault.
Customer Review: ... And Don Costa died known as father to Nikka Costa!
This is just a good CD but ... Who remembers the great arrangements of "Sinatra & Strings", the first Sinatra-Costa collaboration, a Reprise CD available here@Amazon?: one of these orchestrations drew attention of composer Harold Arlen who asked who had written the arrangement for his "Come Rain or Come Shine". Who remembers the definitive arrangement of "New York! New York!" for Sinatra which placed Lisa Minelli's recording to an honored second team? Who remembers the sensational arrangements of "Laura", of "Tender is The Night", or of Cole Porter's "I Love You" for Johnny Mathis' albums, all currently available CDs here? Who remembers "La Puerta" and all Eydie Gormé-Costa collaboration for ABC and for Columbia Records? Who remembers "Songs for The Jet Set" and other collaboration work with Tony Bennett? Who remembers Dinah Washington, Kenny Larkin, Chris Montez or Trini Lopez and other singers who had the original arrangement work or the production of Don Costa. Maybe most of you do not remember the famed United Artists album "Voices & Trombones" and the arrangements for "Adiós" and "Echo of Love"?. Happens that United Artists has sold all its non-OT material to EMI. It's easy to know why EMI has declined to a point that has led to its sale - unfortunately their executives did not know just a bit of their catalog importance including their own Capitol material. The EMI Special label EMD presents this compilation as a consolation item which does not match the Don Costa's importance for the music industry. When Mr.Costa died, a local Brazilian TV news program (nationally known as "Jornal Nacional" - Jornal Nacional) presented a small RIP note which was read by nationally famous news anchor Cid Moreira. The quote said: "Died Don Costa, father to Nikka Costa!" Very sorry!

Classic Cartoon Favorites, Vol. 4 - Starring Chip 'n Dale

Classic Cartoon Favorites, Vol. 4 - Starring Chip 'n Dale
The mischievous chipmunks Chip and Dale began as the unnamed rodent-pests in "Private Pluto" (1943); they acquired names in their third film, "Chip an' Dale" (1947). Although the duo became a mainstay of the Disney shorts during the late '40s and '50s, primarily as adversaries for Donald Duck, the characters never quite gelled. Their appearance and the pitch and comprehensibility of their voices change noticeably from film to film. Chip (the smarter one with the smaller nose) and Dale (the dim one with the larger nose and, often, buck teeth) are at their best when they're trying to protect their home and acorns from Donald ("Chip an' Dale," "Out on a Limb") or Pluto ("Food for Feudin'"). They're less appealing when they become aggressors ("Three for Breakfast"). The other three entries in the Classic Cartoon Favorites series, devoted to Mickey, Donald, and Pluto, repeat many of the shorts previously released in the Walt Disney Treasures series. This disc is the first one devoted entirely to Chip an' Dale. (Unrated, suitable for ages 5 and older: cartoon violence, minor ethnic stereotyping) --Charles Solomon
Customer Review: Perfect For What I'm Looking For
These Disney "Classic Cartoon Favorites" are perfect for entertaining my two-year-old niece when she comes to visit. Each disc is about an hour long broken into 7-9 cartoons. Perfect for her short attention span. At $10 a disc, they are very easy on the wallet & I have bought five in the series and plan to buy more for birthdays and Christmases. I enjoy the cartoons for the nostagia and my niece never gets tired of them. Serious collectors will want to bypass this series and buy the deluxe collector's sets.
Customer Review: Disney Cartoon Classics
I grew up watching Disney Classic cartoons on the Big Screen at Saturday matinees. Later, I watched them faithfully on "Disney's Wonderful World of Color." These Disney cartoons are much better than what is being shown on TV these days. Therfore, I look forward to sharing this cartoon classic with my grandson.

Customer Review: Many great memories
This is an excellent collection of truly classic Christmas and holiday movies, cartoons, and TV shows. They bring back many good memories of "Christmas's Past". I remember watching many of these when I was a kid. And while some of the shows are not the best quality, I think that adds to their character. Lets face it, some of us that have been around as long as these films, have a few wrinkles ourselves. So don't hesitate to buy this collection if you like good wholesome entertainment.
Customer Review: You can't beat this collection for enjoyment, just some poor VHS quality on some programs. (explained)
This "FAMILY HOLIDAY COLLECTION" with 12 Holiday Movies (from 1935 - 1964), 49 Holiday TV Episodes (1950's and 60's) and 27 Christmas Cartoons (1940's - 1960's) is a very nice mix of seasonal Favorites of yesteryear. 8 DVD's and over 40 hours of Holiday entertainment! NOTE: Most is in Black and White format, direct VHS transfers, ALL 4:3 aspect ratio (Standard) and some are grainy with some audio inferiority. But for the most part a very enjoyable and entertaining mix for the holiday's. My favorites and suggested viewing for the movies: Beyond Tomorrow (1940) a very nice story about 3 old rich gentlemen who take in a young forlorn couple during the holidays (with a nice twist). The Miracle on 34th Street (1955 made for television) not as good as the 1947 version with Natalie Wood but still a fun story. And Scrooge (1935) a rare English version nice touch (a little grainy but a treat to experience). My favorite Cartoons were The First Christmas, Howdy Doody Christmas, Jingle Bells, and Rudolph, the Red Nose Reindeer. My favorite Tv episodes were many; All 5 of the "Ozzie and Harriet", Racquet Squad (the Christmas caper), Charles Dicken's The Christmas Carol with Vincent Price as the narrator, The RUGGLES (Christmas Eve 1952) and the A Child is Born. Also there is a BONUS virtual fireplace sequence too!! (very clear with crackling burning logs in COLOR) Just sit back and enjoy some really memorable Christmas / Holiday fun!! I recommend this Collection for any family there something here for everyone!!!! Enjoy.

A bunch of old cars. Unless you want to know about these old relics don't purchase. It is not a biography!

Benji

Benji
Brand new digitally remastered release of the movie that catapulted Benji into international stardom. A unique motion picture of love and suspense because it's all told from the dog's point-of-view. No narration. No dogs talking or thinking out loud. Just a scruffy pup that critics say expresses emotion better than many human actors.

Benji is a simple yet gripping story of a vagabond dog who happens upon some information that certain humans need to know, and the complications he encounters in struggling to communicate what he's seen.

The movie has been digitally re-mastered with new stereo sound by BenjiMovies.com, supervised by the film's director, and is available in VHS and DVD formats. All retail copies are reproduced directly from digital masters, not from analog copies.
Customer Review: A blast from my past
Truly a nostalgic trip back to my childhood - the film is just as engaging as I remember (although a little more violent than I recalled, with the kids getting kidnapped and Benji's poor girlfriend pooch getting literally kicked to the side at one point) All in all a very cute and engaging tale of a lone dog and his world. My toddler LOVES Benji (and almost all dog movies)
Customer Review: Stay of the couch you stoopid dog!
Benjy just won't listen. This dog refuses to be housebroken and after several attempts by inpatient owners, Benjy is finally taken to the pound. Benjy escapes and joins the circus, along with long time rival, Curious George. At least Lassie was smart.

Mark of Zorro

Mark of Zorro
Douglas Fairbanks, the most famous of the Zorros, made this mix of comedy and derring-do reluctantly, as a change-of-pace from his modern-dress playboy roles. The Old California adventure fared so well at the box office it caused the athletic superstar to rethink his image and don period finery for his best later vehicles, including The Thief of Baghdad.

Here, Doug has a ball playing dual roles, as hopeless fop Don Diego and as masked caballero Zorro, sworn enemy of all oppressors. When he isn't dueling with the evil Capt. Ramon (Robert McKim) or rescuing peasants, Don Diego/Zorro courts the lovely Lolita (Marguerite de la Motte) with bad magic tricks and worse manners. In the end, when Lolita's family is jailed, our hero throws off his masquerade, whips out his rapier, and wins the leading lady's hand.

Full of fun plot twists, secret passageways, and Fairbanks's signature arms-akimbo bravado, this silent classic (with restored sepia interiors) became the model for all the Errol Flynn-Tyrone Power swashbucklers to come. --Glenn Lovell
Customer Review: Doug's Breakthrough Film
Though lacking the high production values of its 1940 counterpart, the original "Mark of Zorro" is great fun. This adaptation of Johnston McCulley's "Curse of Capistrano" propelled Douglas Fairbanks from light comedian to adventure star. Inventive action sequences and a vigorous pace make this Doug's most enjoyable feature-length vehicle. For comic-book artist Bob Kane, the film was a major influence in the creation of Batman.
Customer Review: Classic Version Of Zorro With America's Leading Man. The Standard For Future Versions Of Zorro.
Johnston McCulley's first Zorro story "The Curse Of Capistrano" appeared in 1919. Douglas Fairbanks, known to audience for romantic comedies, adapted the story for the screen himself under an assumed name. The result set the standard for future adaptations of the masked bandit. This is a MUST for film buffs. Not Rated.

Alice in Wonderland (Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection)

Alice in Wonderland (Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection)
In the hands of Disney's extraordinary animators, Lewis Carroll's immortal literary classic comes to life like never before! The surprises begin when a daydreaming Alice encounters a White Rabbit who is frantically running late. She chases him and falls into the magical, madcap world of Wonderland with its kaleidoscope of off-the-wall characters -- including Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Cheshire Cat, and the manic Mad Hatter, who invites her to a memorable tea party! The crowning confrontation begins when Alice meets the notorious Queen of Hearts and her enchanted deck of playing cards. Tricked into a curious game of croquet, Alice, and her patience, end up on trial. Is there no escape from this whimsical escapade? Filled with fantasy and topsy-turvy fun, ALICE IN WONDERLAND is teeming with spectacular songs and astounding animation in the highest Disney tradition!
Customer Review: Like it more as an adult than did as a kid. . .
Not sure why that is? Perhaps I have more respect for Disney now than I did then? huh... still not a fan of Bambi... but seriously this USED to bore the heck out of me. Perhaps the restored DVD with the enhanced colors did the trick. Not sure but I do recommend, especially if you are a collector. This is a CLASSIC.
Customer Review: Wonderful Special Edition
Alice in Wonderland is a wonderful film, and this edition is no different... providing extras and interesting commentary, new songs as well as singalongs, and more. Worth noting is that the extras are primarily adult-oriented, other than the singalongs and the Wonderland Party. The Disc 2 features, like 'An Hour in Wonderland' are more informational and historically based, something that I'm not sure that children would enjoy as much as long-time fans of the film might. Overall, it's a great DVD with interesting features, and of course, a wonderful film.

Waking Walt

Waking Walt
WAKING WALT is a spellbinding take on one of America’s most enduring urban legends. Could it be true; Walt Disney was never cremated and buried at Forest Lawn as the official story goes? Imagine that, for nearly 40 years, the great entertainment genius has been in cryonic suspension, waiting to return when a cure for his lung cancer is found. Now, an experimental drug being tested looks like the answer. The waiting is almost over.

Then, disaster strikes!

In a déjà vu nightmare for The Disney Company, a ruthless corporate raider launches a takeover attempt, planning to sell off the company’s assets to the highest bidders. And this time there are no white knights in Disney’s corner.

But the Circle is still there, the small group of confidants who helped Walt escape death and who have been guarding him and his secret ever since. Even though they’re all old men now, they’re not about to let Walt’s company be torn apart without a fight. And they know just who can lead them. However, as they scurry to wake him, the Circle discovers there are powerful forces that want the dead to stay dead. But they don’t know Walt Disney!
Customer Review: Waking Walt will keep you awake at night
I had the pleasure of reading Waking Walt recently. I was not familiar with the Disney legend that Walt was cryogenically frozen. I am also not a Disney theme park fan. Yet, Larry Pontius's book kept me riveted to the pages and caused a few very sleepy days at work. It is a well-paced detective style thriller. Characters are well-developed. Walt was represented as a crusty, impatient man who people loved because of his genius and in spite of his flaws. This book would make a great summer read. It is a true page-turner.
Customer Review: reality and creativity
We all have heard stories of Walt Disney being cryopreserved, but wait for this story. It takes that premise and grows into a fast paced mystery/adventure. You get the feeling that Larry knows Walt and knows the inside scoop. It definitely is an enjoyable read.

The Black Cauldron (Walt Disney Classics)

The Black Cauldron (Walt Disney Classics)
Customer Review: A classic for children of all ages
Orphaned Taran must deal with a disappearing pig, a haughty princess, and a lovable creature named Gurgi on a quest to prevent Arawn Deathlord from using the Black Cauldron to create an army of undead. Throw in adventure, suspense, and a dash of wizardry for a book guaranteed to thrill children of all ages. (Part of Alexander's Prydain Chronicles.)
Customer Review: Does this mean Disney's rereleasing the movie?
I love the Black Cauldron. Read Lloyd Alexander's Black Cauldron Books! Gurgi is the best character. I hope that the fact that this was published in 1994 means that Disney is going to rerelease the movie. I thought they'd deny its existance forever.

Customer Review: One of my favorite Gene Kelly Movies
I love Gene Kelly! In recent years I sense that he hasn't gotten the due he has deserved. I might be the only one that feels this way, but it seems that our world today is steadily forgetting the great silver screen stars of our movie past that showed the rest of hollywood past and present what being a movie star was all about. Maybe that's just the way it is... maybe we can't do anything about it... But that doens't mean I have to like it! Enough of that.. This is a great movie in it's own right. Based on the Alexandre Dumas classic the movie stays true to the book, and pushed me to find other movies based on classic works. The cast is great! June Allison is so sympathetic (to me at least), and the best supporting character in the movie has to be Vincent Price. Gene Kelly the star of the film shows in comic chops, as well as his dramatic. I can't imagine any major film actor today being able to do what Gene did athletically in the film. Truely a film for the ages that every Kelly fan, silver screen fan, & Dumas fan should pick up.
Customer Review: Another Great Swashbuckler
Another wonderful swashbuckler. Very entertaining. The color is wonderful. There is nothing like the old movies Terrific.

Humphrey Bogart: Beat the Devil & Call It Murder

Humphrey Bogart: Beat the Devil & Call It Murder
Customer Review: Bogart Double Feature
Beat the Devil is far from Bogart's best, but it is a witty, entertianing send-up of some of his best films like the Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, and Key Largo. The plot invovles some rather vague shennanigans having to do with a uranium mine, but the plot is almost beside the point in a film like this. The real fun has to do with Bograt, Peter Lorre, and the rest of the cast playing it straight in one ludicrous scene after another. The film is atmospheric, well-paced, and full of the unexpected. It has deservedly become a cult classic, and the reputation of this film has increased as the critics realized that director John Huston was pulling everyones leg with this film. Call it Murder is an intelligent, thought provoking film, that does seem a bit stagey, slow-moving, even creaky by today's standards. Yet it does have it merits, and would be worth a view simply beacuse of the way it examines a tough issue like the death penalty. Bogart, in what is a very early role for him, doesn't have a lot of screen time, but he's quite good in the parts he does have. Call it Murder may be a bit of a curiosity, but thanks to Bogart, the issue it examines, and a suspenseful ending it is worth a look.

It came on time and it works! What more can I say! Thanks!
Customer Review: Bad quality and mostly cut
Sorry, but I cannot agree with the positive reviews. While there certainly are some merits to make these old movies available at a bargain price, one has to see the great shortcomings: Most films are of VERY poor quality, but what really is horrifying is that NEARLY ALL of these filmes are SIGNIFICANTLY cut!

Susan's Journey: Step Through the Wardrobe (Narnia)

Susan's Journey: Step Through the Wardrobe (Narnia)

C.S. Lewis's The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe has been a fantasy classic for more than fifty years and is now a major motion picture!

Susan Pevensie wishes everything could be sensible and normal, but it's not. The world is at war, and she and her brothers and sister are far from home. When Susan finds herself in the enchanted land of Narnia and in great danger, it is almost too much to bear! But hope lies with the mysterious Great Lion, Aslan, and Susan learns to accept the new, breathtaking magic that surrounds her.

Customer Review: Excellent book for the kids
I saw this on Amazon and wondered what it was like, so I picked it up. This is an excellent book for the kids. Adapted from the movie, the book takes the reader through The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe from Susan's point of view and interjects what she may have been thinking along the way. It also has black and white photos from the movie.

My Best Girl (Silent)

My Best Girl (Silent)
In My Best Girl, Mary Pickford demonstrates the winsome charm that won her the title "America's Sweetheart." She plays Maggie Johnson, a sensible stockroom girl at Merrill's, a five-and-ten-cent store. This is the heyday of the big five-and-dimes and Robert Merrill (Hobart Bosworth), the store's wealthy owner, is clearly a stand-in for F.W. Woolworth. The opening shot of Maggie displays Pickford's prodigious gift for physical comedy. She stumbles onto the selling floor laden with pots and pans, kicking them out of her way and wearing them like shoes. Then, when a salesgirl takes a break, Maggie is given the chance to be a salesgirl herself for a fateful few moments.

Maggie's first and only customer is the owner's son, Joe Merrill, (fresh-faced and sunny Charles "Buddy" Rogers). Maggie has no clue of the young man's pedigree, as he is slumming as "Joe Grant." His father has insisted that he work his way up as a humble store clerk without benefit of his famous name. The chemistry between Joe and Maggie is instantly apparent. Maggie takes him down to the stockroom, where he's helpless with the simplest tasks. "You know, you're awfully dumb," she tells him. But thanks to her patient training, he's eventually promoted to the position of her boss. (It's an appealing role reversal of the principals in the "Pygmalion"/"My Fair Lady" tale.) In the meantime, of course, they fall in love.

The moment when Maggie realizes Joe's true identity is stunning. She runs back to her humble family on "Goat Hill": fumbling father, (Lucien Littlefield), lachrymose mother (Sunshine Hart), and reprobate sister (Carmelita Geraghty). Is Maggie and Joe's love affair doomed? Or will they sail away to paradise together? Only those who see My Best Girl can learn the answers to these burning questions. --Laura Mirsky
Customer Review: Beautiful, Romantic, Funny
Did you know Mary Pickford met her 3rd husband, Charles "Buddy" Rogers during casting for this film? Anyway, that's what gives this movie an extra intrigue for me. I mean, here she was married to the dashing Douglas Fairbanks at the time when she's canoodling with Buddy Rogers in the movie... And Buddy's sooo handsome and charming! (Have you seen him in 'Old Man Rhythm' 1933) Mary's performance is wonderful too, she's got the character down (her mannerisms and facial expressions are right on). So, endearing, this movie is one of my fave silents.
Customer Review: When You Gotta Pick a Pickford Flick...
This is the Pickford Flick to Pick! You simply can't go wrong with MY BEST GIRL. The plot is one you've seen a million times, but it just doesn't matter. This film is so engrossing and transporting that you'll swear it's all brand new. The performances, direction, settings, music, humor, you name it -- all are pitch perfect. If you've never seen a silent film, this is the one to see. If you know someone who thinks silents aren't worth seeing, show them this one. If you'd like to see a silent film that really holds up in the 21st century, search no further. If you're feeling down or depressed, see this film. If you need a date movie in a pinch, grab this one. If you'd just like to sit back, relax and watch a DVD that's fun, entertaining and top-notch in virtually every way... well, you know the answer. If there is a flaw -- and this is nitpicking -- it would be an extended sequence toward the end that veers dangerously close to going over the top. Otherwise, it's sweet, charming, romantic and old-fashioned in the best possible sense, but never cloying or saccharine. It's simple, straightforward, predictable... and perfect. MY BEST GIRL is one of the very few films, silent or otherwise, that I can't imagine anyone disliking. And it has tremendous rewatchability -- an important factor when considering a purchase. A word about the new musical score: David Michael Frank NAILS this movie. This is, hands down, one of the best silent film scores I've heard. It adds major impact to an already strong film, and don't be surprised if the breezy themes bounce around your head for weeks after viewing. Am I gushing? You better believe it! After writing all of this, I just can't help myself... I gotta go watch MY BEST GIRL!

Cobra

Cobra
Customer Review: Rudolph's crazy wife
slow start, but great movie with all artistic control in the hands of his crazy wife. Knowing what they spent getting real antiques, It is no wonder the studio heads were pulling their hair out, as they are almost never seen and play no part in the story.
Customer Review: Unusual But Excessively Languid Valentino Vehicle
The 1925 COBRA was among Valentino's last films--and it tends to divide the star's fans, who either rejoice at his appearance in a realistic drama or yearn for something that rivals his earlier, often outrageous seductive melodramas. The story concerns Count Rodrigo Torriani (Valentino), an impoverished Italian nobleman with a penchant for torrid affairs that lead to endless and often monetary difficulties. Largely in order to escape such difficulties, Rodrigo agrees to work for American antiques dealer Jack Dorning (Casson Ferguson)--only to find himself little better off in New York, where he wavers between office secretary Mary Drake (Gertrude Olmstead) and Jack's femme fatale wife Elise (Nita Naldi.) In a stylistic sense, COBRA shows what Valentino could do as an actor when he was not encumbered by the usual "great seducer" scripts pressed upon him--and he acquits himself very well. The supporting cast, most particularly Naldi, is also excellent. But there is no two ways about it: COBRA is so low-key that it feels excessively slow as it moves toward its none-too-surprising conclusion. The film itself is beautiful to the eye. Valentino is very close to the height of his physical appeal and Naldi is stunningly beautiful in a series of Adrian-designed gowns; the art direction by William Cameron Menzies is excellent, and the cinematography by Fischbeck and Jennings has a velvety quality that is quite fine. Even so, and with a running time of just over an hour, COBRA feels excessively languid in tone. The DVD offers a handsome transfer and good music score, but little else. Recommended--but primarily for hardcore Valentino fans. GFT, Amazon Reviewer

Here Comes Peter Cottontail

Here Comes Peter Cottontail
Have you ever wished for a classic Easter special to show your kids? Here Comes Peter Cottontail is a Rankin & Bass production that bears a marked similarity to the beloved Santa Claus Is Coming to Town. Narrator Seymour S. Sassafrass, voiced and sung by Danny Kaye, takes young viewers on a tour of the mythical April Valley and relates the story of how Peter Cottontail almost failed in his quest to become Chief Easter Bunny. Sassafrass peers into his magic egg, and viewers are introduced to Peter Cottontail--a spunky, ingenious young rabbit who is boastful, is prone to fibbing, and lacks a sense of responsibility. In order to become Chief Easter Bunny, Peter Cottontail must defeat the evil Irontail in a contest to deliver the most eggs on Easter Sunday. Through his trials, Peter Cottontail discovers the value of ingenuity, the importance of placing duty before pleasure, and the folly of self-conceit.

Here Comes Peter Cottontail features catchy songs, great 1970s stop-motion animation, and a fun Easter tale. Parents will find themselves reminiscing over holidays gone by or wondering how they missed this show in their own childhood. The 2 and up crowd will be begging for another showing long after the Easter candy is a distant memory. --Tami Horiuchi
Customer Review: great classic
I would highly recommend this to all of us who remember watching this during Easter time. It's one of those rare classics that came on TV around Easter time and was difficult to catch, especially without the advantages we have today, DVR. Thank you Rankin and Bass for providing great holiday memories and thank you Vincent Price for providing great voice characters.
Customer Review: Here Comes Peter Cottontail
This is a classic holiday film that possesses the same quality as the original Rudolph. Vincent Price is a great villain as usual.

The Guns of Navarone/Force 10 from Navarone (Cinema Classics)
Customer Review: One of The Best War Novels ever Written
An amazing book ,it completely encompasses all the possible attributes of avery good novel.Highly thrilling and explosive, it starts of with a bang and carries on like an Express Train. A must read , is very difficult to put down. (Personally I have read the book around 75 times and can still read it with the same enthusiasum as though it is the first time.)
Customer Review: The classic war adventure story
I read this book as a teenager at the recommendation of a neighbor, a former English teacher. The book is enthralling account of what would now be considered "special forces" in World War II secretly landing on a German controlled island in the Mediteranian, crossing the island and eventually attacking the huge in-cliff gun implacements at Navarone. On the way they encounter various problems and surprises that must be dealt with. Highly recommended for teenagers (and adults) with an interest in adventure, the military or war history.

Customer Review: No Hollywood pretty people in this movie...
Remembering that the film was both a product and a tool of the Soviet political machine, the hatred of the Tsarists is evident throughout. It takes discontented masses and charismatic leaders to spawn a revolution. The seeds of discontent are graphically illustrated in this classic production. The charismatic leadership is not an issue in this movie, which is not surprising since they were no less evil then the Tsarists. The story is compellingly portrayed through the rapid transition of action sequences that should please even the short attention spans common in the MTV set. No Hollywood Pretty People in this movie, each is distinctive and right for the role. The grime on the faces, maggots in the food... the polished brass on deck, the bloodshed on the famous steps of Odessa... the story is a visual delight, though it was hard not to smile at the obvious propaganda promoting a classless society.
Customer Review: Great film, bad music
This was the first silent russian film I'd ever seen, and I like very much! It contains a lot of elements I enjoy in silent films: great acting, descriptive captions, engaging plot. This version even includes the Russian Captions, with the english description below! The only problem I have with this film is the music track on this DVD is much too neutral for Russian Revolutionists. The score does not fit with what is happening in the film. Otherwise, it is fine and a wonderful film!

Laurel & Hardy: Blockheads + Music Box

Laurel & Hardy: Blockheads + Music Box
Customer Review: Amusing.
Block-Heads (John G. Blystone, 1938) When you start collecting all the thousand-best-movies-ever lists and correlating them, you find some interesting stuff. I've never been a big fan of Laurel and Hardy's shorts, but I'd never seen any of their full-length features. Since Block-Heads is on one of those lists (Scaruffi's, if anyone but me is keeping track), and since it happened to show up on turner Classic Movies last night, I figured I'd give it a whirl and see. And I did find it quite enjoyable, if not side-splittingly funny; physical comedy has never been my thing. In any case, the scenario: a GI (Laurel) is left behind by his company for twenty years, guarding a secluded base. When he's discovered and brought home, his old friend (Hardy) swoops down and rescues him from the Old Soldier's Home on his (Hardy's) first wedding anniversary, inviting him home for a steak. Mrs. Hardy, of course, is nonplussed. Adding to the trouble is the gorgeous neighbor from across the hall, Mrs. Gilbert (Patricia Ellis), who through various misadventures finds herself in dutch with her husband, who believes Hardy's wooing her. Needless to say, anything that can go wrong does, not just for Laurel and Hardy, but for everyone around them. Very amusing, and worth your time, even if you're not a physical comedy fan. ***
Customer Review: LAUREL & HARDY AT THEIR BEST
"BlockHeads"is among the funnier Laurel & Hardy feature films.Classic laughs.Actress Mina Gombell's role of Mrs.Hardy is quite reminescent of Australian actress Mae Busch, who had played the same role in a number of the boys'films. Most memorabley in their 1933 feature"Sons Of The Desert". "The Music Box"is probably considered Stan and Ollie's best short subject. This film won an award for best comedy of 1932.It is my friend's favourite L&H film. The computer colorization of both films takes getting used to.I like it and I don't.Though it does add colour to both films.Especially"The Music Box".But it also takes away the nostalgia.Especially with the updated background music added to"The Music Box".
