I Dreamed of Africa

I Dreamed of Africa
At the age of 25, Kuki Gallmann moved to Kenya with her future husband, where they established a vast ranch. But Africa's beauty does't come without a price, and when tragedy struck, Kuki found herself pregnant and alone with her young son and 90,000 acres of Africa to oversee. 32 pages of photos, half in full color.
Customer Review: I Dreamed of Kuki's Africa-so I went
I did volunteer work at Kuki's Ol Ari Nyrio in 11/07 and it was the most amazing experience of my life. I also had dinner with Kuki and she is an artist- attentive, creative, intelligent, and misses nothing. Africa is a place like no other-you cannot expect the norm - truth is always more interesting & stranger than fiction, remember. Kuki is an amazing person and the work she has done for the people & animals in the area, without spoiling the natural habitat or trying to change the people's ways, is well told. The death of her son and husband, so tragic, has led her to different levels in life, where so much work has been done for the good of generations to come. Read her books-they are wonderful!
Customer Review: A captivating story of Africa, personal courage and love
I Dreamed of Africa is a fascinating, compelling story of an indominatable, larger than life individual, Kuki Gallman, and her life's journey from aristocratic beginnings in Italy to settling in the Great Rift Valley area of Kenya, Africa, with her adventuring, glamorous second husband, Paolo and her son Emanuele. The book is a personal and touching story of discovery, transformation, overcoming major tragedy, and the land, dreams and hopes of Kuki's Africa.

Sorrell and Son

Sorrell and Son
1926. Illustrated with scenes from the Photoplay, a United Artists Picture featuring H.B. Warner. Set in England the story is about a man who devotes his life to making his son's a success. In the course of the story many themes are explored including life, love, career and familial and marital relationships. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.
Customer Review: Beautiful story of a father and son
Sorrell and Son is a beautiful story of the love and commitment of a father to his son. Returning to civilian life in England after fighting in World War I as an officer and being decorated for bravery, he comes home to find no place to fit in. His wife leaves him, he cannot find a job and raised as a gentleman has no marketable skills. The only thing that keeps him going is his twelve-year-old son who is utterly dependent on him. The book spans the boy's youth and adulthood. It's a story of self-sacrifice and love and finding meaning in a harsh environment. The only thing that bothered me in the first half was the author's negative portrayal of women in general but he made up for it in the end with his understanding of the young woman Sorrell's son falls in love with. The author shows a sympathy for the limitations women faced at that time with only wife and motherhood their only real options. Sorrell's son has to nearly lose her, as well as his own life, to understand that she, too, deserves to find a fullfillment in her work. Wonderfully told, really, really well-written.
Customer Review: An American story set in England
This is a book to read over and again. The central theme has its Horatio Alger aspect in Sorrell's climb from adversity (failed marriage, underemployment), to affluence and success, through the combined forces of hard work and professionalism with a good dash of luck. The secondary story is Sorrell's wonderful relationship with his son, and his strong but tender rearing and overseeing his of education in school and in life. This book is a first rate read and a must addition to your library.

TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: Romantic Comedies (Adam's Rib / Woman of the Year / The Philadelphia Story / Bringing Up Baby)

TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: Romantic Comedies (Adam's Rib / Woman of the Year / The Philadelphia Story / Bringing Up Baby)
Customer Review: A great set of romantic comedies
This is one of 27 sets of four movie packs that Warner Home Video plans to release in the next few years. Their purpose is to introduce classic film to people previously unaware of these films via very affordable bare bones versions of these movies. This set has four very good films, all featuring Katharine Hepburn. Woman of the Year (1941) - The film that introduced Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and sparked a long relationship both on and offscreen. Here Hepburn plays an early feminist who goes around collecting causes. Spencer Tracy is the sportswriter that loves her. They marry, but things go downhill quickly since Kate is really already married to her causes. Adam's Rib (1951) - Ten years have passed and Hepburn and Tracy have aged a bit, but the spark and the chemistry is still there. This time the pair are married lawyers. He is a prosecutor and she a defense attorney. Problems arise when Hepburn defends a woman who shot her husband when she caught him cheating on her and Tracy is the prosecuting attorney in the same case. Bringing Up Baby (1938) - One of the original screwball comedies. Stars Cary Grant as an anthropologist who gets mixed up with a very dizzy young woman played by Hepburn. The plot involves a tame leopard - Baby - and a dinosaur bone buried by a dog - the exact whereabouts are unknown. The Philadelphia Story (1940) - Reteams Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant as a divorced pair of socialites. Hepburn's character is about to marry a man of the people who pulled himself up by his bootstraps, and also happens to be one of the most annoying people who has ever lived. James Stewart oddly won a Best Actor award for what is essentially a supporting role. It is especially odd when you think about all of the other great performances in which he was the undisputed lead and he wasn't even nominated. The only drawback to this set is that - if you want all the extras - you might want to consider Classic Comedies Collection (Bringing Up Baby / The Philadelphia Story Two-Disc Special Edition / Dinner at Eight / Libeled Lady / Stage Door / To Be or Not to Be) in the case of Bringing Up Baby and The Philadelphia Story. Hepburn and Tracy fans might want to consider The Hepburn & Tracy Signature Collection (Woman of the Year / Pat and Mike / Adam's Rib / The Spencer Tracy Legacy). However, both of these sets are considerably more expensive than this basic four-pack, and low cost is really the point of this set in the first place.

A young reader's edition of the classic story follows the adventures of the eccentric would-be-knight Don Quixote and his trusty sidekick, Sancho Panza, as they battle real and imaginary foes.

Out of all the "wishbone" books i have read, this is my favourite. in fact, this story is so incredibly well adapted, it is one of my favourite books ever! it is hard not to like people getting attacked by windmills...

Fun and Fancy Free (Disney Gold Classic Collection)

Fun and Fancy Free (Disney Gold Classic Collection)
Fun is probably worth the purchase for "Mickey and the Beanstalk," the second half of this combo-film. "Beanstalk" includes the last performance by Walt Disney of Mickey Mouse. It also has Donald Duck and Goofy as comrades who climb the beanstalk in their back yard to face Willy the Giant. This segment actually achieves the goals of the film's title. The first half, however, is "Bongo," the story of a addlepated circus bear. "Bongo" is more poky and interest-free. Dinah Shore warbles and narrates the segment, and it goes on much too long for its purpose. Don't trade your cow in for it. --Keith Simanton

Customer Review: Um,
I never recieved this product, even though I paid for it. I realize it was just a video tape, but I still should have gotten it by now right? It never got here.
Customer Review: Great movie, terrible video quality.
This review specifically refers to the Gold Collection DVD. The transfer to DVD is one of the worst I've ever seen - I upgraded from a VHS tape and the video quality of both are about on par. It's watchable and the younger kids may not care, but very disappointing considering what it could have been. If you have a larger TV expect to be underwhelmed.

Customer Review: "IT'S NOT HERE!!!'
THE ORCHESTRA THAT PLAYS,"SEPTEMBER SONG" IS NOT HERE! THEY PUT IN HARRY JAMES VERSION ON THE CD. THIS IS BOGUS. THESE 2 CD'S HAVE MUSIC FROM 1927 TO 1949. IT'S GREAT OLD TIME CLASSIC AMERICAN MUSIC FROM OVER 25 OF HIS MOVIES (NOT ALL OF THEM.) I WOULD HAS GIVEN THESE CD'5 STARS, BUT, THE ORCHESTRA THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR ON THIS CD IS NOT THERE. ... I SHOULD SAY, THE MYSTERY ORCHESTRA. JOE BUSHKIN PLAYS IN THE LOWER REGISTER OF THE PIANO. BUT,"THE JOE BUSHKIN STORY" CD IS NOT THE VERSION FROM THIS MOVIE. MAYBE DICK HYMAN THREW IT IN WITH THE REAL AUTHENTIC MUSIC THAT'S INCLUDED HERE. WILL WE EVER KNOW???
Customer Review: Glad I found it.
If you enjoyed Hanna and Her Sisters, you probably loved much of the musical soundtrack from the film. Many of my favorite songs from the film are included on this disc, as well as many others from other films of Woody's. Really enjoyable if this is your type music. I only wish it included a few more songs from the film I was hoping for.

I bought this DVD after reading some of the reviews here. My 18 month old already has the "Blues Biggest Stories" DVD and loves it. So I thought he'd love this one as well! I was right! He sits for all 4 episodes. It's a great DVD if you favor Steve (since he's in all the episodes) instead of Joe. A "must get" for your little one!!

Cross of Iron (1977)

Cross of Iron (1977)
Sam Peckinpah weighs in on World War II--and from the German point of view. The result is as bleak, if not quite as bloody, as one expects, in part because the 1977 film was cut to ribbons by nervous studio executives. The assorted excerpts that remain don't constitute an exhilarating or even an especially thrilling battle epic. The war is grinding to a close, and veterans like James Coburn's Steiner are grimly aware that it's a lost cause. The battlefield is a death trap of sucking mud and barbed wire, and the German generals (viz., the martinet played by James Mason) seem to pose a bigger threat to the life and limbs of Steiner's men than the inexorable enemy. Not even Peckinpah's famous sensuous exuberance when shooting violence is much in evidence; the picture is a depressive, claustrophobically overcast experience. The bloody high (or low) point isn't a shooting; it's a wince-inducing de-penis-tration during oral sex. For a fun time with the men in (Nazi) uniform, try Das Boot instead. --David Chute
Customer Review: 3 stars out of 4
The Bottom Line: Not Peckinpah's best, Cross of Iron could have used tighter pacing (and an actual ending), but nonetheless offers an interesting and altogether different portrait of war that's distinct and well-made enough to be worth watching.
Customer Review: I liked it in 1977 - not so much today
I saw "Cross of Iron" when it was in theatrical release in 1977 and thought it was a pretty good treatment of the German side of WWII. I watched it again last night on DVD and found myself fast-forwarding past the dull spots. Since I have collected WWII German militaria, lots of little mistakes in uniforms and equipment jumped out at me. The most glaring was the imitation Reich war flag hanging in the background in the outdoor hospital scenes. Coburn's performance holds up, but Schell's character is so broadly drawn as to seem malevolently cartoonish. And then there's Peckinpah's cliche treatment of violence by reverting to slow-motion when the shooting and stabbing start. It served him much better in "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid." The art of the war film has matured considerably since 1977 and compared with "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers," "Cross of Iron" comes across today as a heavy-handed Hollywood production.

Customer Review: You Ain't Read Nothin' Yet
It is almost an oxymoron to read a book about movies, since books are to stimulate your brain and movies are merely entertainment. But the fact is, many book are not worth the paper they are printed on, and certain movies have a profound impact on us. Thus, we have this book by Lee Pfeiffer. Let's examine the evidence. 1)Organization. Good. The sound movies in this book are organized by sixteen genres such as Westerns, Comedies, Romances, and so forth. And for the most part it works. Occasionally, the author goes off the path. For example, John Wayne's The Quiet Man is listed under Comedy, rather than Romances. Also under Comedies are Mr. Smith Goes To Washington and Lilies of the Field. Similarly movies like A Christmas Carol and It's A Wonderful Life are found listed under Sci-Fi/Fantasy. It would have been better had the author made another category like Inspirational to put those movies in. Then again, a good movie is hard to classify. That's why the author wisely put in several indexes. 2)Movie Choices. Great, especially the silent movies which are often overlooked. By organizing the book of genre, classic animation movies like Dumbo and Pinocchio get their due, as well as certain Hammer horror movies. The author mentions how a friend of his despises It's A Mad...Mad World, but he included it anyway. Good call. However, the author refers to the 1955 Ten Commandments starring Charlton Heston as a bad movie. Thumbs down on that. Ten Commandments made the American Film Institute's top 100 inspirational films and Moses made the AFI's top 50 heroes. I also wished that he included Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. The truly bad part is that the films only go to 1969. So that means that Patton (1970) and other classics didn't make it. But that's the fault of the editors. Hopefully, a second volume will remedy that. 3) Information. Excellent. The author is at home with the subject. He lists the company, director, producer, writer, running time, and main actors with their roles, followed by a brief synopsis. He includes composers, like Max Steiner and Elmer Bernstein who have blessed many of my favorite films with memorable tunes. And he did get one detail wrong when he says that Bela Lugosi of Dracula fame died with drug addiction. Bela bravely conquered his addiction, albeit, at the end of his life (at least that what I was told in the commentary to Universal's Dracula). Still, some of the information he reveals is amazing, for example a big error in the movie Yankee Doodle Dandy. (No, I'm not going to tell you.) I only wish there were a good photograph for each movie, but that's just me. 4) Appendix and Index. Great. You are treated to AFI's top 100 films, AFI's top 100 quotes (what we got here is failure to communicate), top ten box office stars 1950-1969, and useful websites. There are indexes of Actors, Directors, and Movies. The indexes make the book very user friendly to find your favorite actor's movies. The jury finds that while this books isn't for a student wanted to go in-depth over a specific film, it is extremely valuable for the average Joe who wants to know about classic films and where to start. Verdict: Not Guilty. P.S. I hope his editors give him the green light for a sequel.

Gulliver's Travels (60th Anniversary Edition)

Gulliver's Travels (60th Anniversary Edition)
This 1939 animated film is based on Jonathan Swift's classic novel about a sailor stranded on an island populated by people the size of his thumb. When Gabby, the town crier, discovers Gulliver on the beach, he runs to tell the king. But the king is preoccupied with the impending wedding of his daughter, Princess Gloria, to Prince David from the neighboring kingdom. When the kingdoms can't agree on which song to play at the wedding, Gulliver is caught in the middle of a war. His common sense helps the two sides resolve their dispute, but not before a lot of adventure and romance.

A milestone in the art of animation, this was the second animated motion picture of its magnitude ever produced, after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It has been digitally mastered and visually enhanced, making it first-rate family entertainment even today. --Elisabeth Keating
Customer Review: Classic children's movie
This is quite simply one of the greatest children's classics of all time and this particular production is worth the money. Lemule Gulliver washes ashore and encounters a land of tiny people. Through adventures, they come to understand that it is important not to judge a book by its cover...A classic lesson to learn. This vintage american cartoon classic is a must own for every collection. I highly recommend this title.
Customer Review: This is the one to buy !!
Gulliver's Travels I agree with all the other reviewers who rate this particular release as 5 star quality for it's masterful remastering and completeness. NO OTHER 1939 Gulliver's Travels on dvd is complete, starting with the Paramount introduction, etc - how do I know ??? I have purchased three others before this one, each advertising it as complete, and believe me, one of those had the Town Crier's first entrance up to where the two kings are discussing their childrens wedding excised !! The last-mentioned three's "re-mastering" is a joke. I am certain that no one will be disappointed with this superb version.

The Curse of Frankenstein

The Curse of Frankenstein
Victor frankenstein builds a creature and brings it to life. But his creature behaves not as he intended. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 02/14/2006 Starring: Peter Cushing Hazel Court Run time: 83 minutes Rating: Nr Director: Terence Fisher
Customer Review: I like it better than Hammer's Dracula
The first of Hammer's monster movies, this one is less known today than Horror of Dracula. Both star Peter Cushing (here as Baron Frankenstein) and Christopher Lee (as the creature). Personally I like this one better than Dracula. Peter Cushing is given more opportunity to shine in this role than he got as Van Helsing, and the Jimmy Sangster's script is well written and character driven. There are many great scenes between Viktor Frankenstein and his mentor, Paul. And Christopher Lee is a good creature, very different from that of Karloff. Recommended for all horror fans.
Customer Review: Total Pleasure
These Hammer horror gems are a must for anyone seeking to be entertained by great actors. Peter Cushing was in a class by himself when it came to self-parody and cockiness.

Generation Oscar®: 50 Modern Day Movie Classics

Generation Oscar®: 50 Modern Day Movie Classics

In author Randolph MichaelsÂ' first book Flashbacks to Happiness, the subject of discussion was the music of the 1980Â's. This time around, Michaels covers an even longer span of 20 years in Generation Oscar, an analysis of the 50 greatest films that were ever nominated for an Academy Award. Five of them even won the coveted Best Picture Oscar.

From Stand By Me in 1986 to Munich in 2005, all of the films reviewed herein have managed to stay on Randolph MichaelsÂ' own radar screen ever since they were first released on the big screen. He strongly believes these are the movies most likely to impress even the harshest of critics and withstand the test of time. So why not rent them from your local video store and judge them for yourself?

Film buffs and those who follow the annual Academy Awards should find Generation Oscar to be indispensable. It is an insightful and comprehensive account of how film has the power to be the most important tool directors skillfully use in consistently inspiring, informing and entertaining us year after year.

Oil!

Oil!
In Oil! Upton Sinclair fashioned a novel out of the oil scandals of the Harding administration, providing in the process a detailed picture of the development of the oil industry in Southern California. Bribery of public officials, class warfare, and international rivalry over oil production are the context for Sinclair's story of a genial independent oil developer and his son, whose sympathy with the oilfield workers and socialist organizers fuels a running debate with his father. Senators, small investors, oil magnates, a Hollywood film star, and a crusading evangelist people the pages of this lively novel.
Customer Review: intellectual treat
The handling of social issues was much more diverse than the movie "There Will Be Blood." The oil man is not nearly as bad in the book, but the industry is a pathetic mess.
Customer Review: Great Story, but a long listen
I purchased the audiobook version of 'Oil', because I remembered enjoying reading 'The Jungle' in High School. This was a good story, and even though it is set in Southern California in the 1920's the story largely transcends time. However, and this is a big however it was VERY detailed, so much so that it detracted from the story and was too long to listen to it (20+ hours). Go with the abridged version if it is available.

Customer Review: Film noir cards
These cards have lingo from classic b/w gangster films on one side, and an explanation with a film still on the other. The cards also give the character's and star's names, the movie, the release date, and the director. Example: Button = Face with a still of of James Cagney smashing a half-grapefruit in Mae Clarke's face at the breakfast table. The box is nice, it has a ribbon to lift the cards out without forcing or bending them.
Customer Review: mmm
Okay.. for those of you who are expecting to add this card set to your postcard collection... like I was until I opened this box... they are just normal flash cards. They are not postcards. If you are a postcrosser like me, you dont want to get these cards.

Customer Review: The First "Home Alone" Drama
Two small children, left home alone on a deary, rainy day, are startled by a home intruder--a giant, talking feline who proceeds to trash the house! This book should have damaged us forever, but it remains deliriously funny. It is left to the fish to be the voice of responsibility and everyone knows fishes are all wet! This 1957 book brought compelling drama and conflict to the easy reader section of the library. The glimpse through the window shows that the mother is returning! What will she find? Thing 1 and Thing 2 running through the house, banging their kites around? Disaster! No spoilers in this review...get your own copy! Although this has been made into a movie and an audio tape, I point out that although it's a great story, it's meant to be a book that the child can read. Translating it into other media is a bit like cheating.

Movie Maniacs Series 7 > Sheriff Hoyt Action Figure

Movie Maniacs Series 7 > Sheriff Hoyt Action Figure
Movie Maniacs Series 7 > Sheriff Hoyt Action Figure
Customer Review: Forget Leatherface, Sheriff Hoyt is the really scary monster
The 2003 remake of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" creeped me out. Of course I waited until late at night to watch it, which is what you were supposed to do with a horror movie. I will not go so far as to say this is a great horror film, and I am not suggesting that it replace the raw power of Tobe Hooper's original in any one's mind, but it sure creeped me out more than any of the new releases I have seen in the last year of so. Maybe part of the effectiveness of this remake is that for those of us who watched the original we know the basics of what is going to happen so that there is a sense of anticipation that no matter what is happening on screen something really bad is about to happen. But if I were going to point to something else beyond the cinematography it would be the fact that this time Leatherface is not the really scary one. No, the honor goes to R. Lee Ermey who brings his drill sergeant from Hell to the character of Sheriff Hoyt. Even before Leatherface shows up these teenagers are in way over their heads. For those of us who heard stories about red-neck Southern sheriffs pulling over long-haired teenagers his character certainly resonates, and in this film he has four teenagers to put through their paces. The 6-inch Sheriff Hoyt figure is 7 1/4 inches tall on its base, which includes the back of the van with the window blown out by the hitchhiker the kids picked up. Hoyt is wearing his full sheriff's uniform and has his handgun. Once again, it is not just the details of this McFarlane Toys figure but the way they capture Ermey's face that makes this one work. Just look at the eyes, the stubble on his cheek, and the hands on his watch, but mainly look at that sneering mouth. McFarlane's Movie Maniacs Series 7 figures include three other "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" characters, good girl Erin (Jessica Biel), Old Monty (Terrence Evans), and, of course, Thomas Hewitt a.k.a. Leatherface (Andrew Bryniarski).
