Film Noir Classic Collection, Vol. 3 (Border Incident / His Kind of Woman / Lady in the Lake / On Dangerous Ground / The Racket)

Customer Review: My Kind of Movie
Save your money about the current movie about the dog that poops and dies, and discover the power of movies to engage us at deep, unsuspected levels. Plot is usually secondary in film noir (with the exception of "The Maltese Falcon"); atmosphere, understated acting (Jimmy Stewart is practically the antithesis of film noir), and exquisitely shadowed cinematography reign supreme. Westerns, long the most popular genre in American film, examine our personal relationship to nature; film noir examines the complexities of modern urban existence and our place in a dangerous and deceptive social milieu, a world that can paradoxically leave us as isolated as the Western loner. The quintessential archetype of the Western is John Wayne and "The Searchers"; the same position in film noir is occupied by Bogart and practically any of his films from the 1940s. Later color films can qualify, providing the colors are muted so completely they play like black and white--prime examples: "Chinatown" and Clint Eastwood's underrated "Tight Rope"). America's obsession with film noir throughout the 1940s is testimony to a pervasive paranoia or a sophisticated appreciation of film art or both. The stand-outs in the present collection are: 1. Robert Ryan and the Bernard Herrmann score for "On Dangerous Ground" (great title for a work on film noir, a genre that transplants us from the open plains to the shadowy, mysterious streets of the inner city--though surprise!--in this film the country ground is no more stable or peaceful or less "noirish" than the dark and treacherous urban pavements. Ryan, the heavy-weight-boxer-turned actor (in real life) gives another nuanced performance (in reel life); the score could not have been composed by any other than the composer of the music for "Vertigo" (splendid movie but too "operatic" to qualify as film noir); 2. "His Kind of Woman" may be the most multi-layered example of film noir yet. The fact that Vincent Price doesn't steal the show in what is arguably his best performance is a tribute to the smoldering, sensual power of the "love dance" between Mitchum and Russell on screen (after viewing him in this film, I can finally understand his appeal. That glide--the legs moving without the participation of the torso--is as unique a form of poetic pedestrian choreography as the John Wayne stride). If all this weren't enough, there's Raymond Burr in one of the most cruel, sadistic, obsessively psychotic roles ever filmed. But in the end, the film becomes swashbuckling, slapstick farce, equal parts Erroll Flynn, Mack Sennett, and Shakespeare--all of it harmonizing thanks to the charming, forgivably narcissistic theatricalism of Vincent Price. The film is at once a remarkable example of film noir and a send-up of the entire genre. In a Special Features section included with each film are extended commentaries, often of questionable worth. On this latter one, the scholar repeats the word "wonderful" as often as Caroline Kennedy says "Y'know" and attributes Price's Shakespearean quotes to the wrong plays. The violent thriller "Border Incident," while not prototypical film noir, receives perhaps the most insightful, thoughtfully-scripted commentary from an NYU prof, though the political emphasis is often overdone (mustn't allow the slightest stereotyping of Hispanics go unnoticed, even though the filmmakers probably imagine they're pro-Mexican--the kinds of observations that, after awhile, take on a self-congratulatory quality while perhaps the most excruciating death scene ever filmed somehow gets explained away in glib archetypal/political talk. And why not pay as much attention to George Murphy's idiosyncratic "look" and acting on-screen as to his political sympathies off-screen?). But each includes at least some fascinating trivia and, best of all, they give the viewer an excuse to watch the films a second time. Each flick is well worth it!
Customer Review: well worth the price!!
This set in a way is an unusual mish mash of film noir... there is nothing really in common between the movies besides the broad elusive banner of 'film noir'.. But there is much to love here and for a reasonable price.. My favorite film of the set is the Nick Ray gem - 'on dangerous ground' - which is a beautiful example or Ray's mastery.. and it features a soundtrack by Bernard Hermann... Robert Ryan gives a solid performance as a cop with a serious problem.. Another great film in the set is 'The Racket' which also features Ryan along with Robert Mitchum... It is a pretty bleak tale of the underworld which at times absolutely sizzles.. 'Border Incident' is a film which has some great moments.. It is directed by the great Anthony Mann.. It is a very poignant tale which is very relevant to modern issues.. It shows that the issue of immigration has roots in the past and corruption.. not just the modern 'invasion' that fox news would have you believe.. a complex movie on a complex topic beautifuly filmed.. 'His kind of Woman' is probably the most 'fun' of all the films.. Robert Mitchum and Vincent Price light up the screen - in a film that is almost as comic as film noir gets.. Which brings me to the final film 'Lady in the Lake' which is unintenionally comic.. It was a bold experiment in using a subjective camera throughout an entire picture.. in my opinion it fails.. but in a way it is so bad its good.. i wish mystery science theatre would have a go at this one.. but it is interesting to see nontheless.. and a piece of film noir history..

Spider-Man Movie Classic 2 Figureure Vulture

Spider-Man Movie Classic 2 Figureure Vulture
The Vulture appears to be extensively articulated, is partnered with a vulture mascot, and boasts an impressive wingspan. The Vulture is an example of one of the more fitting namesakes. Heâs slightly stooped and wizened, carrying his barren head low along his feather-collared shoulders. His leathery-textured costume is joined with his wing pack, his arms linked to the rippling green wing feathers. The Vulture developed his back-borne harness as a restorative device, additionally reaping the benefits of winged flight and increased strength. The Vulture is a permanent fixture to the Sinister Six. Despite his varyingly infirmed condition and advanced age, he usually proves to be a handful; considering the fact that the Vulture was sick and elderly at the time of his first appearance, back in Amazing Spider-Man #2, and the fact that heâs still very much active, heâs apparently tougher than turkey jerky.

Customer Review: THANKS AMAZON, FIRST PURCHASE
I placed my order on 07/21/08,i live in Nicaragua. The estimated time of arrival from amazon was August the 27th. I got it August the 7th, i came from work and this AMAZON.COM box was waiting for me. I grew up with the original series from the 80's. I saw a few episodes of this new series on cartoon network and i was immediately hooked. Great animation, some characters that never showed up in the original are here and their looks have improved. I only waited 2 weeks and a couple of days, my fear was that it might not get here but it did. I'm going to place my order for volume 3 vs SNAKE MEN right now. I'll eventually buy the first volume, even though we all know there is a flaw in one of the episodes, some minutes missing. But the first 3 origin episodes are worth the package, and what a package it is. TO THE GUYS WHO CREATED THIS SHOW, please make another volume/season, even if its direct to dvd. I'll buy it, im going to place my new order now. THANKS AMAZON.

Pete Huttlinger Teaches The Songs Of Gordon Lightfoot-Guitar Arrangements For Eight Classics

Pete Huttlinger Teaches The Songs Of Gordon Lightfoot-Guitar Arrangements For Eight Classics
The great Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot has written some of the most beautiful and enduring songs of our time. His soulful voice and rich guitar accompaniments have made him a true legend in the folk and pop music pantheon. Master guitarist Pete Huttlinger has the rare ability to hear all the nuances in Gordon Lightfoot s guitar arrangements. As he has done for the music of John Denver and Jim Croce, he makes them easily accessible to learning players, teaching the chord progressions, rhythms, fingerpicking patterns and soulful musical touches that help make each song a unique and powerful statement. This lesson will be a joy to intermediate guitarists who want to add these stirring songs and beautiful guitar arrangements to their repertoire: Early Morning Rain, Carefree Highway, Rainy Day People, Circle of Steel, Steel Rail Blues, Bitter Green, If You Could Read My Mind, Cold on the Shoulder.
Customer Review: A Gift for Aspiring Guitarists
This is a gift for those guitarists who, like me, have played Gordon Lightfoot for years but never quite "got it right". Lightfoot always sounded so simple yet Pete shows it is a little more complex than that. Pete's style is very casual, easy going yet you can tell he has almost a reverence for the music. But as you might guess from his list of awards he is a very, very good instrumentalist. It's no wonder John Denver sounded so good with this guy backing him up! Pete displays absolutely no ego whatsoever which is impressive from a guitarist this talented. No fancy riffs to show you who's boss and that are so common on many instructional videos. He makes you feel like you could actually play these songs well with a little practice. As is typical of Homespun Productions, the technical aspects of this DVD are great. Multiple camera angles, close-ups, fades give this disc an unhurried feel. Sure you have to go back again and again but Happy Traum got the pace exactly right. It felt like he did this disc for me. Take the advice from others that this is not a beginner's disc. Some of the chord shapes (A-form barre for instance) are a little tricky for new players but certainly give advanced beginners and particularly intermediates something to work with. I really enjoyed learning some of the solos that I will incorporate into my playing. Seriously, if you enjoy folk music and Gordon Lightfoot as I do this is a great value. I will be buying Pete's other DVD's soon.
Customer Review: guitarfun
This is a very helpful lesson and Pete Huttlinger is a great teacher. If you are serious about practice and learning then this video is for you. Especially if you like Gordon Lightfoot.

Life With Father

Life With Father
Ah, remember those good old days when father ruled the roost, keeping a tight rein on the money, the kids, and the docile wife? Well, neither does Clarence Day (William Powell), the title character in Life with Father. Taking place in New York in 1883, this charming comedy purports to show the life of a strict father managing his house and his family, only to be constantly--and unknowingly--out-manipulated by his somewhat ditzy wife, Vinnie (Irene Dunne). Day is terrifying enough that maids keep quitting, but Vinnie manages to keep Day under control--that is, until she discovers that he was never baptized. A battle ensues as she desperately tries to ensure that they will one day meet in heaven, and all the while he severely maintains that the church has no business messing with a man's soul. Meanwhile, young Clarence Day Jr. (Jimmy Lydon) is busy falling for visiting Mary Skinner (played gigglingly by Elizabeth Taylor), and his brother John concocts a money-making scheme that involves the selling of a rather dubious potion. The costumes, the characters, and the wonderful story line--based on a play that was based on the memoir written by Clarence Day Jr.--make this a delightful movie that's perfect for a family-film night. --Jenny Brown
Customer Review: Life with Father
I ordered 3 dvds of the movie Life with Father. I bought these as Christmas gifts and I watched one myself and I was dissappointed. The quality was as if it had been taped right off the tv. I asked the about the other 2 copies and was told the same thing. What are you going to do about this? Sinerely, Pat Bedson
Customer Review: wonderful and funny
I enjoyed this movie because it has great views of life in a different century. A very young Elizabeth Taylor and Irene Dunn along with William Powell make this an entertaining 2 hours!

Loser Takes All (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics)

Loser Takes All (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics)
Luck seems to have eluded Betram altogether. He doesn't even believe in chance. But when his wedding plans are moved to Monte Carlo, he is drawn to the Casino and is seduced by good fortune. A Miramax film starring Robert Lindsay and Molly Ringwald.
Customer Review: Amusing and light while still being clever
"Loser Takes All" is one of Graham Greene's lighter novels yet is still full of Greene's unique observations and colorful characters. Taking place mostly within a casino, it has at its base the dream of every gambler: The unbeatable method of winning. The consequences of this discovery and how they play out in the life of the main character and his new wife, comprise the majority of the plot line. Although "Loser Takes All" is certainly entertaining, Greene does tackle some of his old familiar themes like the corruption of money and its subsequent affect on human relationships. The male character who stands both inside and outside of his own world, common in his other novels, also makes an appearance in the main character of Bertram, although Bertram does retain some of his lighter elements as can be seen in the restaurant scene with his wife, her new boyfriend, and Bertram's date. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something simple and amusing yet also memorable.
Customer Review: Quick and Fun
This slight Graham Greene novel is really more of a long short story--I read virtually the entire thing on a two-hour flight to New York City. But Greene is still able to infuse his story and characters with the moral significance that infuses all of his work. What happens in this novel really seems to *matter* in a way that it wouldn't in the hands of another author. Greene was great at making the most innocuous of situations feel full of portent; it's as if the character's moral fate will be decide once and for all by whether or not they take that last trip to the gaming table, or have that last drink, or go through with that meaningless one-night stand. It's this quality of Greene's that make his "entertainments" so satifsying to literature lovers: they have all of the attributes of the most thrilling page-turner, but the reader doesn't have to feel like he needs to sacrifice a love for style and substance in order to enjoy it. Not one of Greene's most profound works, but very entertaining.

Sadie Thompson

Sadie Thompson
Customer Review: A landmark of silent cinema history
This DVD is a special treat for serious enthusiasts of classic films because despite its missing end scenes, Kino Video has resurrected this silent film with a reconstructed ending and many bonus features which give ample in-depth and background information about Sadie Thompson. Based on a real-life person, the story of a prostitute clashing with a religious reformer or minister first appeared as a novella by W. Somerset Maugham, then a Broadway stage play before screen legend Gloria Swanson decided to tackle the challenge of playing the controversial character. Her second venture as a producer for United Artists, Swanson chose a highly talented crew to complement her own outstanding performance, which resulted in an energy-charged, entertaining and well-balanced drama with touches of playfulness and subtle humour. Lionel Barrymore is frighteningly convincing in the role of the overly zealous and pragmatic reformer, who was originally a religious minister in the story and play, but due to censorship rules in the 1920s, any reference to a minister or church had to be removed. Gloria Swanson also excels in this role which allowed her more acting expression and depth than her `fashion clothes horse' roles she had become so famous for in the early 1920s. Her mannerisms and even her walk convey the essence of the Sadie Thompson character as she fools around with some US Marines, then challenged by the strict, conservative and judgmental reformer and his wife. When she finally gives in to pressure to atone for her sins, the transformation to a plain and sullen woman is also quite striking. Just as the electrifying tension between Sadie and the reformer culminates, the moving film ends and is replaced by stills which reveal the final twist of the story. This is somewhat of a disappointment, but considering that "Sadie Thompson" was believed lost for several decades, most viewers will surely be happy just to see this important film in its present state: almost complete with only a few segments of poor picture quality due to deterioration. An exceptionally good orchestral score more than makes up for the few blurry scenes, and enhances the various moods and intensity of the drama throughout. The bonus features give background information about the film, the original story, as well as comparisons between the written story, play and films, including a sound re-make only a few years later with Joan Crawford entitled "Rain". With hardly any action and most scenes shot inside the hotel in the tropical downpour, "Sadie Thompson" is more of an intellectual film which challenges two extremes of thought and life-style, and when or whether a compromise can be found. The classic story and its author aside, this film is also of interest due to the cast and crew, with Raoul Walsh both acting and directing, and art direction by the renowned William Cameron Menzies whose efforts to re-create the South Pacific inn also add to the overall high quality of this production.
Customer Review: Superb Somerset, Swanson and Silent
This 1928 silent film is perhaps one of the alltime great films and as much as I love Joan Crawford in "Rain," this version impresses with its fine attention to story. Based on the Somerset Maugham tale, it tells of a fun-loving and seductive young prostitute, the titular character (Gloria Swanson), temporarily holed up on the island of Pago Pago with a forbidding reformer and a gaggle of marines when her boat to Apia is infected by small pox. It becomes clear what a maniacal, almost psychotic and self-delusional figure religious reformer Alfred Davidson (Lionel Barrymore) is and his exact attentions upon Sadie's conversion when his eyes stray to her heaving bosom. Barrymore is wonderful in conveying this man's frightening fervor and human frailty. This is in great contrast to the wooden quality of Walter Huston in "Rain" (although Huston was also very effective). Gloria Swanson is sexy, vivacious and full of fun, her antics actually making me laugh out loud, her camaraderie with the marines impish, funny and light. The attraction between "Handsome" Tim O'Hara (Raoul Walsh) and Swanson is palpable, particularly when the camera lingers in close-up on Swanson's ravishing beauty. She has eyes that rival Elizabeth Taylor's. Her face also expresses an entire range in the character from unself-conscious coarseness to innocence, wistfulness and desire for a better life with a respectable man -- in fact, Barrymore and Swanson create complex characterizations without a single word spoken. The music also adds immensely to the mounting tension of various scenes and fortunately, some of the film footage that was lost has been painstakingly restored, although the loss remains a great one. One can only imagine how dynamic these high points in the plot would have been with the real footage and it is grievous to know that so many silent films and other early films, some perhaps as important as "Sadie Thompson," have indeed been lost forever. In any case, a superb version of the classic Maugham story. Highly recommended for any film buff and a great chance to see Swanson at the peak of her powers and beauty, her talent and magic in front of the camera undeniable. Yes, they certainly had faces then!

Customer Review: A very good release of a saturday morning staple
When i found out this series was out on DVD it was like all the other Batman video memorblia a must buy as i remember watching this in the late sevenites more than the superfriends just for the really well done artwork of the main charachters and that batmoblie that was a cross between an AMC Javeln and a 1959 cadillac hence the tailfins, or should i say the batfins. I always did rendtions of that car in my spare time. I love the series with only three exceptions. One is that little Batmite who is as Batman said in the very first episode "a nice guy, but a royal pain". Another is the missing faithful butler Alfred which was the father figure of Bruce Wayne/ Batman as well covered in the moives and even the original antimated series voiced by Olan Soule/ Casey Kasem. The final last little peeve was the episode "A sweet surpirse for Gotham" which you got to admit like all saturday morning toons at the time were geared for teaching a lesson in life in this case the results of eating too many sweets. I had lost some weight this past year and frankly that menisis was really replusive in my opinion and the fact he and his kiddies were seen eating candy like there was no tomorrow. On the plus side it make one great tool for encouraging folks to eat healthier and lose weight. All that aside, i can get into this series no problem, and the fact that Adam West and Burt Ward are the voices of the Batman and Robin characters makes it all worth watching and yes there are some serious campy overtones from the original TV series, IE: Batman refers to Catwoman as "that felonieous feline" and shall we not forget Robin with the infamous catchphrase "Holy Bad Memories" well fill in the last blank. Well worth buying. Now how about releasing the late sixites aniimated Batman series!!!
Customer Review: Painful
There is simply no other way to describe this series. I watched it as a kid (10 years old) and thought it was terrible and painful then, but still watched it because some Batman was better than no Batman. I remembered hating this Bat Mite side kick and the poor story lines. Thank God the Super Friends were starting to take on super villains. As an adult, I wonder who green lit this and who was the executive responsible for the lowest common denominator factor and 'dumbing' this down and assuming children were idiots who wanted Scrappy Doo and Muppet Babies because Scooby, Kermit, et al were too adult and cerebral... Save up and get: * Batman-The Animated Series from the 90's (A++: especially any two or three episode arcs) This is truly great stuff, arguably, one of the best animated series ever made and the animation, tone, and mood were superb. Batman and Robins tragic origins are skillfully addressed and the viewer feels the tragedy that brought them to this stage. Even Robin's departure to Nightwing status is well addressed as Batman grows darker and ruthless. This headiness in animation that is still accessible to, and in fact made for, children. Batman - The Animated Series, Volumes 1-4 (DC Comics Classic Collection) * Superman The Animated Series, the follow up series to Batman (B- to A+: I was surprised how good this was, I thought I would hate it--many Batman fans don't like Superman's do gooder candy-coated approach, un-flawed world, immortal fights that posses no risk, and the ludicrous omnipotent villains that lack Joker's insane bloodthirsty ruthless pathos or the mentally disturbed nature of Scarecrow, Two Face and Rhas Al Guhl). The series really came into its own in the second and third seasons--and the Batman cross over episodes and two or three episode arcs with and without Batman are great Superman - The Animated Series, Volumes 1-3 (DC Comics Classic Collection) * The subsequent Justice League and Justice League Unlimited (B to A+) pick up where Batman TAS and Superman TAS left off and both series really came into their own after a few mis-steps. The final season's underlying story arc was really clever and captivating (it drew you in the way animation normally does not, more like a night time drama would when you can't wait to see the plot un-fold) and the relationships between heroes, as well as ejected members, was very well done. Justice League Unlimited - Season One (DC Comics Classic Collection)Justice League - Season One (DC Comics Classic Collection) * The Batman (C to B+) while definitely skewed younger and with a heavy emphasis on product sales, this show really grew into a solid series as the seasons have rolled on and various side kicks have been introduced (Batgirl, Robin, the Justice League) and the rapport, rivalry, and repartees between the two youths is really priceless in a "kid" sort of way. The Batman - The Complete First Three Seasons (DC Comics Kids Collection) * Batman Beyond also seems good (have not seen enough to rate), after you buy the premise which is tough for strict bat fans. It follows the Batman 20 to 40 years in the future (now old, dark, cynical, and creepily loathsome of crime) from the BTAS being the new Batman's (Terry McGinnis) mentor and benefactor. Batman Beyond, Seasons 1-3 (DC Comics Classic Collection) There is now a new humorous Batman series in development-with writers from The Batman--that will take subtle humorous cues from the Adam West series and we will have to see how that is. If your kids are young, go for The Batman, and if you or your kids are older, the other series mentioned, but on all levels, do not purchase this painful series.

Slapstick Encyclopedia, Vol. 1- In the Beginning: Comedy Pioneers

Slapstick Encyclopedia, Vol. 1- In the Beginning: Comedy Pioneers
This first volume of Slapstick Encyclopedia offers an unprecedented survey of once important, now forgotten but still funny vaudevillians, stage actors and novelty acts that gravitated to the film world during the first fifteen years of the century. Their work in front of the camera inspired the first wave of film comedy. Starting his career at the Essanay Studios as a janitor and shipping clerk, Ben Turpin rose to become one of the most easily recognizable figures in American slapstick and appears here in the 1909 film Mr. Flip.

Bert (Egbert Austin) Williams, the only black performer to cross over into the white vaudeville circuits, performs one of his Ziegfeld Follies routines for the Biograph cameras in A Natural-Born Gambler (1916). Also featured are the works of several other slapstick celebs who graduated to the screen from the stage, among them John Bunny and Victor Moore. In an abridgment of his Amercian-made feature Be My Wife (1921), Frenchman Max Linder (whom Chaplin openly acknowledged as a primary influence on his craft) demonstrates the effortless charm and gift for comedy that made him the first world-famous film comedian. various directors. U.S. 1909-21. Approx. time: 126 mins. B&W. Music by Eric Beheim, Brian Benison, Robert Israel, Ken Rosen.

Contents:

Customer Review: Nine vintage shorts in KINO's Encyclopedia Vol. 1
The first edition of KINO's SLAPSTICK ENCYCLOPEDIA offers some of the best and least works in this eight volume collection. Video quality here is remarkably fine. The frenetic action in ONE TOO MANY (with Oliver Hardy) is overly distorted by a too-fast projection speed. The story of a man trying to fool a visiting uncle into thinking he's got a wife and child sets the improbable in motion: three women willingly "rent out" their infants. The modern viewer worries more that a baby might fall off a standard bed than if the overly porcine Hardy's ruse will succeed. Watch on the street for Ollie's first wife in this VIM Co. "Plump & Runt" comedy. THE WRONG MR. FOX has a coarse vaudevillian (Victor Moore) mistaken for a minister. Humor examples: Escorted by a group of "proper" congregants to his parsonage home, Jimmy Fox looks at it and says, "Is this the hash house? I'll bet the feed is punk." Jimmy begins his first Sunday sermon by immediately taking up a collection then distracting parishoners as he stuffs their donations in his pockets. Very unfunny. MR. FLIP is the oldest film here (1909) and a genuine highlight. To see how far cinematic technique had progressed at the end of the movies' first real decade is heartening, and a glimpse of 100 year old styles also intriguing. 4-minute segment stars an unrecognizable Ben Turpin. Directed by 'Broncho Billy' Anderson. ALKALI IKE'S AUTO is equally venerable but not as engaging, probably due to a too fast projection speed. One of a series of rural-set "Ike" shorts also directed by 'Broncho Billy.' MABEL'S DRAMATIC CAREER was made in 1913, the year that Miss Normand made 62 Mack Sennett KEYSTONE films! Sennett co-stars here as Mabel's jilted boyfriend. He visits a tiny movie theater screening a previous Keystoner called "At Twelve O'Clock." Mack, sees his ex-girl in the movie and tries to interact with her. Fatty Arbuckle (who's sitting next to him) wants Mack to shut up. We get a brief glimpse of a handcranked projector in operation. A top-notch short! FOX TROT FINESSE has a grayish cast to the transfer. Sidney Drew and his matronly wife play a married couple. She loves to dance to her fox trot 78s, he just wants to sit and read. The least slapstick movie here was aimed at adult sensibilities by the Drews. A CURE FOR POKERITIS stars John Bunny, a decidely unamusing flush-faced oversized man with a monstrous nose. Bunny plays poker for money and always loses. When he breaks a promise to stop gambling, his wife assembles a group of fake cops to raid the game. BE MY WIFE is a segment of a Max Linder feature. Because his sweety's mom doesn't like Max, he has to resort to all sorts of tricks to see her. The French-born Linder influenced Chaplin's, Lloyd's and Keaton's styles. A NATURAL BORN GAMBLER stars Bert Williams, an entertainment pioneer (at the time, he was the only black working in white vaudeville). Williams' talents shine in this recreation of one of his stage routines. A superb finish to an interesting collection. SLAPSTICK ENCYCLOPEDIA Vol. 2 features six Sennett comedies that run a total of 2 hours. Parenthetical numbers preceding titles are 1 to 10 viewer poll ratings found at a film resource website. (5.4) Alkali Ike's Auto (1911) - Augustus Carney/Harry Todd/Margaret Joslin/Arthur Mackley (7.8) Be My Wife (abridged) (1921) - Max Linder/Alta Allen/Caroline Rankin (5.9) A Cure for Pokeritis (1912) - John Bunny/Flora Finch/Leah Naird/Charles Eldridge (6.4) Fox Trot Finesse (1915) - Mr. & Mrs. Sidney Drew/Ethel Lee (5.5) Mabel's Dramatic Career (1913) - Mabel Normand/Mack Sennett/Alice Davenport/Ford Sterling/Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle (3.2) Mr. Flip (1909) - Ben Turpin (5.7) A Natural Born Gambler (1916) - Bert Williams (4.4) One Too Many (1916) - Oliver Hardy/Billy Ruge/Billy Bletcher/Madelyn Hardy (6.2) The Wrong Mr. Fox (1917) - Victor Moore

Alice returns from Wonderland only to discover she's on the wrong side of her living room mirror at the beginning of the second half of Irwin Allen's 1985 production, with teleplay by Paul Zindel and songs by Steve Allen (the three-hour film was broken into two parts for video, the first title being Alice in Wonderland). Before you can say "curiouser and curiouser" the jabberwocky is after her. It chases Alice back to a strange land where life appears to be one giant game of chess with pieces portrayed by the likes of Carol Channing and Harvey Korman. The 7-year-old longs to be home, but that doesn't stop her from enjoying some song and dance with Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme), watching a bout between the lion (Ernest Borgnine) and the unicorn (Beau Bridges), or being rescued by the White Knight (Lloyd Bridges). Despite the oddly low-tech visual effects from Star Wars's John Dykstra--the jabberwocky is so clearly a guy in a dragon suit--this thrillingly kitschy movie ably entertains. Where else will you see Merv Griffin as a train conductor, Sally Struthers and Donna Mills catfighting with Vegas-worthy flower headdresses, and Jonathan Winters as a crabby Humpty Dumpty before the fall? Adults who fondly remember the '70s and '80s and children 4 and older should enjoy this version of the fabled tale. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Hollywood Classic Movies 1: NEW LIGHT ON MOVIE BESTS

Hollywood Classic Movies 1: NEW LIGHT ON MOVIE BESTS
Everyone has a "best" list of favorite movies. I introduce my list and then provide complete details on 80 films, some from my "best" list, a few from my "worst", and a couple "in-between".
Customer Review: New Light on Movie Bests
I must confess I'm fascinated by lists. Especially movie lists. So I couldn't resist a book that promised me an essential 1,001 movies to see before I die. What a disappointment! Classic movies received rather short shrift in that book, so I created my own list of the top 400 must-see classic films. And here it is! Some of the selected films receive extended treatment in my book, but I also draw attention to a number of fine pictures that, while they could not be considered the top of the best (or anywhere near the top), are nonetheless so vastly entertaining they will delight every classic movie fan. And there are also a couple of also-rans that seemingly had all the makings for success--great cast, gifted writers, capable directors, lavish budgets--but failed.

The Lord of the Rings

But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth still it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell, by chance, into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. From his fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, Sauron's power spread far and wide. He gathered all the Great Rings to him, but ever he searched far and wide for the One Ring that would complete his dominion. On his eleventy-first birthday, Bilbo disappeared bequeathing to his young cousin, Frodo, the Ruling Ring, and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom. The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the wizard, Merry, Pippin and Sam, Gimli the Dwarf, Legolas the Elf, Boromir of Gondor, and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.
Customer Review: used is used
Obviously I knew buying used books would have some wear. This set was supposibly in 'good conditon'. When recieved product there was a huge coffee stain on one book, old reciepts and role playing cards stuck in between tons of the pages in all 3 of the books. A little disappointed and mislead by the seller. Will not purchase from them again.
Customer Review: Great books, but bad printing.
The Lord of the Rings books are great, but the publisher of these books really did a poor job of printing these. There is extra ink on some of the pages and the maps are poorly put in place.

Camille: The Lady of the Camellias (Signet Classic)

Camille: The Lady of the Camellias (Signet Classic)
Customer Review: The book is a classic.
I only bought the book for a friend named "Camille" who did not know anything about her literary namesake. I am not sure off the top of my head if this is the same author who wrote "The Three Musketeers." or not. I think this is the son. I can highly recommend the original B&W movie version starring Greta Garbo. I don't get emotional easily but the movie moved me. Also, obvious why Garbo was considered one of the "great" ones.
Customer Review: Tres belle y magnifique!
This was a beautifully written and tragic story of the love between a man and a sadly fated courtesan. This novel is quite a page turner, and it's very emotional as well. However, it didn't make me cry or feel deeply sorry for the characters at the end, just a bit sad. This is a nice classic, but it's not a deeply significant classic to read, nor is it one where you will get some deep, insight lessons from. If you are into romance, drama, and tragedy, then this book is for you. Just don't expect it to change your life or anything.

Customer Review: One of her best
This is my favorite Garbo film. I love everything about it-the story, the direction, the performances, the costumes. This film sums up what Garbo meant to women of her time. It's a must-see for anyone interested in her career.
Customer Review: Artistic Romance
The story, by popular writer of the time Adela Rogers St. Johns, is an interesting one. A woman who believes that men and women should be judged equally in their love affairs (Greta Garbo) finds another man who believes the same (Nils Asther). However, romance is more the focus of the story, not an unfair social standard placed on women. The two fall madly in love and sail together on a trip that ends by parting the two; Asther must go far away and cannot think of women where he is going. Hurt, Garbo waits for him, but cannot maintain single hood for long when another man proposes. She tells him she will always love another man; what if he comes back? But he persists and the two are married. They have a child together, played by Wally Albright who later became a Little Rascal. Asther comes back, disappointed by what he sees has happened in his absence. The characters are strong, likable ones. Although Garbo is normally a hardened, aloof sort, she is feminine and sensitive in this role. One might expect differently judging the story, but her portrayal of her character allows for a better, more emotional film. Asther's role is very similar to those that Clark Gable made his own at MGM in the talkies. He is a strong, no-nonsense type that exudes masculinity. Garbo's costumes are not very elegant. Much of her wardrobe makes her hips look very large. On the voyage with Asther, her hair is free and beautiful while blowing in the wind, but in her city scenes, it looks similar to a bad 80s perm. In the last scene, she wears a very large, unattractive sweater in a similar fashion. The film was photographed amazingly; the close-ups are often startlingly gorgeous and look like art one might hang on a wall. However, this print is horribly scratched; one can see the beauty beneath them, but these scratches are somewhat distracting. What is more, there are several deterioration spots. The title cards are sometimes worse; some are clear, but many are badly damaged by bad contrast, scratches, and deterioration.

Customer Review: Madame Bovary-the Mauldon translation
Move over Steegmuller, move over Lowell Bair, Margaret Mauldon's translation is fantastic. The translation flows with elegant ease. This translation has proved better and more accurate than any other, as far as I can tell. I highly recommend this translation.
Customer Review: You Play, You Pay
Honestly, this book is a bitter pill to swallow. It's written beautifully and was a real ground breaker for the realist movement, but the subject matter is incredibly tragic. I found it hard to keep reading as Emma continuously dug herself deeper into trouble, dragging her innocent, loving, and devoted family down with her. It is an incredible moral lesson that is still relevant today: "The Grass is Never Greener on the Other Side." Naturally, I found Emma incredibly dislikeable because she was lazy, melodramatic, arrogant, ignorant, and had this air of entitlement that made me want to slap her. But I did feel sorry for her because she was so caught up in this sense of romanticism, she couldn't see straight. Because of her obsession with passion, the choices she made seemed so predictable, and all you could do was watch it happen like a train wreck in slow motion. I loved how Flaubert mixed the mundane with the romantic in his writing. And I loved the bitter ironies he used, too (especially at the end of the story). I think the reader can gain alot from reading this book to this day. It's unapologetic, yet beautiful.

Customer Review: Great Motivational Movie for kids
This movie is a wonderful motivator for kids. It helps them realize they can work and make money. It has a great morals sprinkled throughout as well and teaches them how to handle life's emotional situations. I would recommend it for kids or preteens.
Customer Review: This movie was actually pretty good
Throughout Elementary school, I've seen various BSC books strewn about in my school Library and classroom bookshelf. As a boy, I've always viewed the books as nothing but just little girls' novels, and so I tended to avoid the books as much as possible lol. I was about 7 years old when this movie came out, and at that time, the commercials were all over the air waves non-stop. Eventually, after seeing the commercials a billion times a week, I for some reason developed a small interest in wanting to watch the film. Some of my friends who saw the movie said they loved it, so I decided to wait until they started showing it on TV, which it has been on many times but I just never got a chance to catch it. So I gave up trying to watch it for about 12 years, and I totally forgot all about the movie. Now I finally got the chance to watch the film on HBO Family yesterday, and I actually liked it! Although I was never a BSC reader, I thought the movie was good. Though I think the movie would've appealed to me more if I was a kid, so I'll always remember the Baby Sitter's Club as "the movie I should have watched when I was a kid."

Customer Review: Um,
I never recieved this product, even though I paid for it. I realize it was just a video tape, but I still should have gotten it by now right? It never got here.
Customer Review: Great movie, terrible video quality.
This review specifically refers to the Gold Collection DVD. The transfer to DVD is one of the worst I've ever seen - I upgraded from a VHS tape and the video quality of both are about on par. It's watchable and the younger kids may not care, but very disappointing considering what it could have been. If you have a larger TV expect to be underwhelmed.

The Muppet Movie - Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition

The Muppet Movie - Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition
Jim Henson vaulted Kermit, the famous floppy-armed frog, and his Muppet pals to the big screen with this charming 1979 musical adventure. Like the TV show that inspired it, Henson and director James Frawley playfully acknowledge movie clichés and conventions and allow the characters to address the camera in asides, like a Hope and Crosby road film for the 1980s. The ambitious singing frog decides to leave his swamp and conquer Hollywood, gathering a group of friends along the way (Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and more) and bumping into oodles of guest stars making tongue-in-cheek cameos (my favorite is the tip-of-the-hat appearance by Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy). Meanwhile, despicable fast-food king Charles Durning pursues Kermit, hoping to make him the spokesfrog for his Frogs-Legs restaurant franchise. Austin Pendleton costars as Durning's sad sack henchman while guest stars include James Coburn, Dom DeLuise, Madeleine Kahn, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Carol Kane, Cloris Leachman, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, Elliot Gould, Orson Welles, and Big Bird. Paul Williams penned the bouncy, song-filled score. You'll believe a frog can sing! --Sean Axmaker
Customer Review: prepare the standard rich-and-famous contract
The Muppet Movie is full of humor that the whole family can enjoy and the plot moves along at a very good pace. This is a very entertaining film that will charm your kids and the child within you, too! The cinematography is particularly well done and the special effects are quite professional. When the action starts, we see Kermit The Frog singing about life in his swamp. Although he is happy there, he soon meets a Hollywood agent by chance who tells him that Hollywood is looking for talented frogs to audition to become stars--and very wealthy stars at that! Kermit can't resist temptation and so he starts his way to California. Along the way Kermit meets a host of the most popular Muppet characters. He encounters Fozzie The Bear, a stand-up comedian who isn't always all that funny but who has dreams of fame and fortune anyway. Kermit also falls in love at first sight with the glamorous Miss Piggy at a beauty pageant; and it's clear she feels the same for him. He meets musicians in a church who call themselves "The Electric Mayhem" and he also meets up with a dog that plays piano in a bar where the Muppets spend a night on their journey. But all is not smooth for Kermit and his friends. Their car breaks down--and the second one breaks down, too! How will they get to California? All through the movie look for special guest star cameos by the likes of Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, Orson Welles, Milton Berle, Steve Martin, Dom DeLuise and more. There's also the very menacing and potentially deadly enemy Kermit encounters, Doc Hopper (Charles Durning) with his sidekick and chauffeur Max (Austin Pendleton). It seems that Doc Hopper owns quite a few restaurants that serve frogs legs and if Kermit doesn't become the "spokesfrog" for the advertising campaign Doc Hopper intends to have Kermit killed! Will they all make it in time for the auditions in Hollywood? How will Kermit keep away from Doc Hopper? What about Kermit and Miss Piggy--will they stay in love or is it just a passing fling? No spoilers here, folks--watch the movie and find out! Unfortunately, the transfer from video to DVD is less than perfect. In fact, it's not good at all. The picture is rather grainy and that is such a disappointment. We do get some stock footage of director Jim Frawley's "screen tests" for these Muppets; but the footage is again very poor quality. The "Muppetisms" are also rather superfluous. I'm taking off a star for all this! I also read that other reviewers are upset with some editing out of Kermit ordering a drink in a bar; I agree with these reviewers that they didn't have to cut this small part out of the picture. Overall, The Muppet Movie is something you can enjoy with your family; and it's just the right length for most kids older than five or six to sit through it without getting restless. The songs are excellent and despite the poor transfer to DVD it's worth it to have this DVD in your collection especially if you have kids who would appreciate this type of film.
Customer Review: Still Funny after all these years
I first saw this movie in the theaters as a teenager, I took my little brothers and sister to see it and it was so good we stayed in the theater for a second showing. My friends and I that watched it when it arrived were all laughing and enjoyed the movie immensly. Something this good never goes out of style.

The Essential Stephen King : A Ranking of the Greatest Novels, Short Stories, Movies, and Other Creations of the World's Most Popular Writer

The Essential Stephen King : A Ranking of the Greatest Novels, Short Stories, Movies, and Other Creations of the World's Most Popular Writer
Stephen Spignesi, the world's leading expert on Stephen King (Enertainment Weekly) ranks 101 greatest creations of the man he calls "our greatest living author."

Working from a body of King's work numbering more than 550 individual creations, Spignesi lists all of King's writings in every genre and then determines the top 101. Each chosen work is synopsized and reviewed.

The Essential Stephen King provides an unbiased, uncompromising review of King's work by an acknowledged King authority. As such, it is a must for all serious and casual Stephen King fans as well as all lovers of superb contemporary literature.
Customer Review: Not awful, but not great.
As another reviewer stated, this work is great for a casual or new fan, wanting to learn more about individual S.K. works and whether he or she might like to read them. For serious fans such as myself, this work is just one glaring error after another, coupled with the lackluster opinions of a self-proclaimed super-fan. In particular, the numerous factual errors that I have found in this book are at the very least distracting, and make me question Spignesi's assessment of S.K.'s writings, especially since he can't seem to keep his literary facts straight! For example, in his entry on "Bag of Bones," Spignesi asserts that Mattie Devore, one of the main characters, is divorced. She is actually widowed, and this facet of this story is important. Another error can be found in Spignesi's entry on "The Dead Zone" (a personal favorite of mine). In this work, Greg Stillson is a third-party candidate for the House of Representatives, not the U.S. presidency! This seemingly minor amount of power initially courted by Stillson is vital to the story. These are just two of many errors, both literary and grammatical, that I found when I read this work. By all means, check it out at the library or borrow it from a friend if you want to know which S.K. book to start with (or just ask an S.K. fan...there are lots of us!).
Customer Review: garbage
The idea for this book isn't a bad one: the ranking of the Top 100 of all Stephen King's works. However, in order for such a conceit to mean anything, there has to be some thought, skill, and insight involved on the part of the ranker. Spignesi showcases none of these qualities. Instead, what you are left with is something that goes no deeper than you might find on any fan-based website. Spignesi's knowledge of King's work is admittedly considerable, but in order for a work of literary criticism -- which this is, no matter how poorly-thought-out and poorly-presented -- to be worth reading, it has to cut a bit deeper than mere knowledge. There has to be insight. Perhaps Spignesi has such insights, but if so, he has no interest in demonstrating it in this book: his typical mode is to simply list what he liked in each work, and usually this consists of saying that he liked the characters, or something similarly facile. Spignesi himself is a TERRIBLE writer. This book is peppered with poor writing, with the misuse (or nonuse) of commas being especially prevalent. Why should we accept the critical judgment of a writer who himself cannot write? There is an attempt to make it plain that the idea behind this book is for it to stimulate discussion about King's works. Well, really, the best way to do that is to simply read them for yourself. You don't need a writer who ought to properly be confined to fanzines to tell you what King's best works are. And if you don't need that, then you don't need this book. Thank God, it was given to me as a gift; no dollars of my own were wasted on this sad excuse for criticism.

Customer Review: If You Watched This As A Child Like I Did...
Buy it to watch with your kids. I was looking for this DVD forever, and then I discovered Amazon.com... I was thrilled to see that they had it!!! I bought this so I could share some of my childhood with my daughter. It kind of bought us closer. Cute movie. Sesame Street is a big hit with any 2-5 year old!!!
Customer Review: Following in dad's footsteps
I bought this for my son when he was 2 back in 1985 (on VHS). He watched it every night (sometimes twice a night) for a long time. Unfortunately one of the other children copied a washing machine commercial right in the middle of the tape. When he became a dad I wanted to get it for his daughter and looked everywhere for a copy. When I found it here on Amazon I ordered it right away. Now they watch it together and have a great time. Sometimes the classics, or new classics, make the best movies. Big Bird never goes out of style.
