Tess of the d'Urbervilles

Tess of the d'Urbervilles
“Tess of the d'Urberville” is the story of a young unwed mother in Victorian England. Tess is a naive country girl taken advantage of by an gentleman only to be abandon when she is 'with child'. Tess has to put the pieces of her life back together in a day and age when men and women lived by very different standards. Written in 1891 by Thomas Hardy the story was heavily censored when it was first published. Despite the censorship it was still condemned by many critics as it challenged the sexual mores of the day. This the uncensored version is now considered to be a classic.
