Laurel & Hardy Classic Collection - Spooktacular
Customer Review: Sweeps, suspects, sailors, suitors
SPOOKTACULARS showcases four shorts from Laurel & Hardy's golden Hal Roach Studios years. (VHS only) In DIRTY WORK, they're chimney sweeps who manage to destroy a professor's living room. In THE LAUREL-HARDY MURDER CASE, Stan's deceased uncle leaves him a huge estate. When the boys arrive for the will reading, they learn that Stan is a prime suspect in the old man's mysterious demise. THE LIVE GHOST is a seafaring yarn of a hijacked crew on a haunted ship piloted by a captain willing to do bodily harm to the first man who says the word "ghost." A drunken swab falls into a vat of whitewash, causing Stan & Ollie to shout out the "magic" word. OLIVER THE EIGHTH is the unsuspecting Ollie, who answers a personal ad placed by a rich but crazy widow with a penchant for bumping off husbands named "Oliver." BONUS: Home movie footage and photos of the boys at work and play, collected and narrated by Stan's daughter, Lois Laurel. (Note: this material is primarily Stan's amateur films of a kids' birthday party and such.) LAUREL & HARDY CLASSICS COLLECTION - ON THE LAM features these shorts: Another Fine Mess (1930), Going Bye Bye (1934), One Good Turn (1931), Scram! (1932). Classic Musicals Collection - The Cole Porter Gift Set (High Society / Kiss Me Kate / Les Girls / Broadway Melody of 1940 / Silk Stockings)

Classic Musicals Collection - The Cole Porter Gift Set (High Society / Kiss Me Kate / Les Girls / Broadway Melody of 1940 / Silk Stockings)
The Cole Porter Collection provides an overview of the swellegant songwriter's witty lyrics and well-known melodies through five MGM musicals. The black-and-white Broadway Melody of 1940 features the brilliant dancing of Fred Astaire (in his MGM debut) and Eleanor Powell (in her fourth Broadway Melody picture). By the 1950s, we recognize the splashy colors that would become MGM's distinctive style in four pictures inspired by familiar sources. Kiss Me Kate (1953) is the adaptation of the Broadway musical, starring Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson as the couple whose offstage feud mirrors their roles in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. The best of the batch, High Society (1956), stars Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and Frank Sinatra in a musical update of The Philadelphia Story, while the 1957 films Les Girls (with Gene Kelly, Kay Kendall, Tania Elg, and Mitzi Gaynor) and Silk Stockings (with Astaire and Cyd Charisse) retell Rashomon and Ninotchka, respectively. Favorite songs in the set include "Begin the Beguine," "I Concentrate on You," "Wunderbar," "So in Love," "Brush Up Your Shakespeare," "Well, Did You Evah?", "You're Sensational," and "All of You." The films boast sharp transfers, making-of segments hosted by legends such as Cyd Charisse and Ann Miller, vintage shorts and cartoons, and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound (except Broadway Melody, which is in satisfactory mono). --David Horiuchi
Customer Review: Honest personal opinion on the Cole Porter Gift Set
I was very disappointed and feel that the only DVD worthwhile in this set is "High Society"--that deserves 5 stars! The other DVDs lack the quality and better-known Cole Porter song content. I would recommend buying High Society by itself, which, ironically, was my initial intention.
Customer Review: two musicals missing in this box set !!!!!
Great box, great musicals too, all remastered. Meanwhile, I don't understand why "Kiss Me Kate" is not letterboxed as I have a widescreen version of this movie on laserdisc. "Panama Hattie" and most of all, "The Pirate" are not included in this box set, why ?

Boys Town

Boys Town
Spencer Tracy won an Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan, who opens Boys Town and dedicates himself to helping juvenile delinquents go straight. Mickey Rooney plays one of the tougher kids, figuring out early on that Flanagan is nobody's fool. Warmhearted and inspiring, the film's inevitable sentimentality is nicely cut by Tracy's performance and a smart script by Eleanore Griffin and Dore Schary (who also won Oscars). A good film for all ages, directed by Norman Taurog (Adventures of Tom Sawyer). --Tom Keogh

Iphigenia (MGM World Films)

Iphigenia (MGM World Films)
Based on the classic Greek tragedy of Euripides. A talented cast provides an insightful interpretation of the ancient drama in which Agamemnon is forced to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia after accidentally slaying a sacred deer. Customer Review: I wanted something different and this delivered
I enjoyed the acting in this very interesting film. It was refreshing to view a film untainted by the worn out formula of graphic sex, violence, explosions and vulgarity. Good acting and lots of options with subtitles and dubbing. If you're not in the mood for this radical departure, you may not like it. But I was hungry for a change of pace and this delivered nicely. I got so absorbed in the acting I felt like I was in the presence of the actors. There are a couple very powerful moments in the film where the acting between the king and the queen is a real jaw-dropper. For me, just those well-acted scenes were worth the cost.
Customer Review: "To Wake Up The Winds" ~ What Cruelty The Gods Demand
Note: Greek & Spanish with English subtitles. The '77 film `Iphigenia' begins slowly and I must admit uninterestingly. The first images that greet your eyes are nothing more than a lot of half naked, Greek men lounging around a beach on a hot, sweltering, windless afternoon. You notice scattered piles of armor and other tools of warfare here and there serving as an indication of the time period of the tale that is to follow. The mood is restless, even angry and the soundtrack amplifies the mood with appropriately discordant music. The men are anxious to sent sail for Troy and reclaim the beautiful Helen but the Gods have withheld the wind from their sails until they have been appeased with the sacrifice of their own choosing. When commander Agamemnon learns that the Gods demand the life of his beloved daughter Iphigenia he is coherced into sending for her under the pretense that she is to marry the brave Achilles. Iphigenia (Tatiana Papamoschou) happily arrives in camp with her Mother (Irene Papas) and female attendants under the delusion that her marriage is at hand (This is where the film comes alive and captures the audiences rapt attention). As the lies and pretenses of Iphigenia's reason for being summoned slowly fall away and her true purpose for being there is made known the viewer is caught up in this heart wrenching tale of familial love versus blind obedience to an unsympathetic Divinity. Excellent adaptation of Greek tragedy captured on film. The only thing missing is the outdoor amphitheater and chorus.

Customer Review: For those who doesn't know the Classics
An excellent work from Louis Clark & the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, I have 3 CD (Hooked on Classics 1, 2 and 3) and I'm looking for more. Do you have the curiosity to enter in the classical music world and you think it's bored?, try this and you'll have a different point of view, of course classical music is not pop but it will give you a good idea how it is.
Customer Review: A Pop-Classics Classic
This is a must have for any fan of Cross-cultural music. It is like a mixed drink. 80% Classical, 20% Rock and roll. It is the perfect mix for anyone who enjoys classical music, but lives an energized, upbeat life style. If you are a strict lover of classical music, you may not like the "steady rythm" of the drum and bass guitar mixed in with a rhapsody of your classical favorites, but you will still appreciatte the artmanship and talent of Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic. It is not to the extreme of ELO, or Metallica's S&M, it leans more toward Rhondo Vininciano (Forgive the spelling, please) only better.

Customer Review: Classic UFC
I only got into MMA a few years ago so I bought this to see what it was all about back in the 90s. The commentary is cheesey, the color commentators constantly got info wrong and wtf... Jim Brown? come on what was Gracie and partners thinking. Just watching the Tuli/Gordeau fight gives you an idea of what it was all about when it started.

the old UFC was quite a bit different than the current UFC. I think these matches are much more interesting to watch.

Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends - The Complete Second Season

Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends - The Complete Second Season
Set your WABAC machine for 1960, and the further misadventures of Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose, the most illustrious citizens of Frostbite Falls, MN (population: 48; and that's during the summer rush). This four-disc set contains seven full-length serials, several of which loom large in the Rocky & Bullwinkle canon, including "Upsidasium," "Metal Munching Mice," and "Greenpernt Oogle," with the rare, reclusive oogle bird (sorry, you'll have to wait until the release of season 3 for the Kirwood Derby).

Perhaps emboldened by what they were able to get away with in season 1, producer Jay Ward, writer and the voice of Bullwinkle Bill Scott, Queen of Cartoons June Foray, "and a host of others," gleefully further broke with television convention. Rocky & Bullwinkle was at once very silly (for the kids) and slyly satirical (for mom and dad). Characters broke the fourth wall ("Don't look at me," a villain insists at one point, "I'm not giving up the plot"). Corporate America (television executives in particular) was mocked. In "Metal Munching Mice," news that robotic rodents are devouring television antennae causes panic when it is realized that the public are unable to watch commercials. And then there are the subversively funny "Fractured Fairy Tales," in which Puss 'n Boots gets skinned, Red Riding Hood is devoured, and no one lives happily ever after, and the time-travel adventures of cultured canine Mr. Peabody and his boy Sherman, in which historical figures are revealed to be boobs. Just for laughs, there is the faux melodrama of forthright Mounty Dudley Do-Right, and the Bullwinkle segments, "Bullwinkle's Corner" and "Mr. Know It All." Still crazy after all these years, Rocky & Bullwinklerises like the anti-gravity Upsidasium above mere nostalgia. Like The Simpsons, this series rewards viewers who pay attention, and invites repeat viewings to catch all the jokes you missed. --Donald Liebenson

Customer Review: Nostalgic refresher for Viewer having watched show as a kid!
Realy enjoyed watching show as a kid in the 1960's! It's especially nice treat to see the show IN COLOR!! When I was kid, we had Black & White TV -parents didn't get COLOR set until all the kids left home! Really enjoy seeing show again, but quickly realized is true what another reviewer has touched upon.. that MAJORITY of duration of show is filled up by time consuming, repetitive sequences shown over and over in each episode.. watch me pull a rabit out of my hat.. ect. I never noticed it as a child but now, as an adult, it has literally put me to sleep numerous times!! I've had to play episodes several times to try and stay awake! I suspect that back in the 1960's they couldn't afford to do all new animation each episode, so only the actual stories were new each time. But is nostalgic remenicing to see them again IN LIVING COLOR! Wish SONY would put out Season Four!! I have all three seasons and would snatch up Season Four!

The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter

Customer Review: Hawthorn's Scarlet Letter......an interesting metaphor for it's time......
Hawthorn's Scarlet Letter is well played in this rendition of the TV series. There are many metaphors....the "Man in Black" in the forest, can be interepreted as the "Devil" or simply, the wild, untamed land within. Pearl, being the offspring of the passion and love of Reverend Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne, is herself a wild, untamed child. This, all in a society, set up by men, who wished to create a "Utopia", whereby all people within the confines of this community would be slaves to the Religious laws, the brutal laws, which caused anxt and suffering in this supposed "Utopic" society. Hester Prynne was made an example, so that the rest of the community would shrink back, would never allow their wild natures to emerge, lest they be severely punished or brought to the gallos. Laws made by men, under the guise of "God's Laws" - but who can truly know God's Laws? And were Hester and the Reverend truly sinners? Or were they truly in love, holding deep inside a true passion for each other and a deep love for Pearl. And isn't true love and passion as wild as the forest? As you watch this series, you will see that human nature cannot be tamed, and to do so, is more of a sin than those actions proclaimed as sinful by the mangistrates of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Enjoy!

Night Train to Munich (B&W)

Night Train to Munich (B&W)
The unofficial sequel to The Lady Vanishes (also scripted by Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat) attempts to recapture the thrills of Hitchcock's charming confection of espionage and romance with generally fine results. Margaret Lockwood reprises her role as the flighty heroine, now the daughter of a Czech scientist captured by the Nazis as her father leaves the country. She escapes from a concentration camp with the help of a defiant male prisoner (Paul Henreid) and rejoins her father, only to be kidnapped back by the Germans, and then... Well, you get the idea. Rex Harrison costars as a seaside crooner who turns out to be a resourceful British Secret Service agent, whose stiff upper lip and school wit are handled with smiling aplomb. The headlong plot tosses the characters back and forth across the continent so rapidly the actors have little room to breath life into their roles, and director Carol Reed lacks Hitchcock's deftness and light touch, but Harrison's cocky, effusive charm helps enormously. Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne re-create their roles as blasé British tourists (when Britain declares war they, deep in the heart of Germany, worry about cricket and their golf clubs left behind in Berlin: "I'll never replace those," Radford mourns). Reed would find his stride after the war with such accomplished thrillers as Odd Man Out and The Third Man. In light of those classics, Night Train to Munich is an inconsistent but wholly entertaining lark. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Review: An hour goes by in this film before we even see this train
Having watched---and been quite enamored with Margaret Lockwood in "The Lady Vanishes" (3/4 of which takes place over rails), and having been impressed by that film's plot, dialogue, and direction I decided to board "The Night Train to Munich" so to speak, so as to continue the journey. Contrary to others herein, I cannot say that such was a wise decision on my part: First of all the quality of this film's recording is rather poor which doesn't help matters. Margaret Lockwood's role pales in comparison herein too; as this film is really one without a leading lady's role, notwithstanding Ms. Lockwood's talents. She was wonderful in Hitchcock's "The Lady Vanishes," but here has just not been given enough material to work with. (It's interesting to think that while "The Lady Vanishes" title is not at all suggestive of being set aboard a train, "The Night Train to Munich" declaratively promotes this notion---notwithstanding the fact that little more than a fifth of it takes place aboard any moving conveyance!) Yes, Rex Harrison ably carries his own herein, as do Basil Radford & Nauton Wayne (reprising their Charters & Caldicott---captivated by cricket---characters), but such is not enough to carry this film into the station. Director Carol Reed (of "The Third Man" fame) just wasn't given a screenplay commensurate with the quality that those who wrote "The Lady Vanishes" provide for this film. If you are particularly devoted fans of Radford & Wayne, Harrison, and/or Lockwood you may be interested in seeing this film, but otherwise you'd be better off just watching "The Lady Vanishes" again---or "Strangers on a Train" if you want suspense along rails. There are hundreds of average to above-average films out there, so unless you've seen most of the the great ones already---and have seen the best foreign films too, you ought to take at pass at fare such as "The Night Train to Munich." Cheers!
Customer Review: Wonderful WWII Thriller By Carol Reed
While this is one of Carol Reed's first-class movies, it also owes a lot to Alfred Hitchcock and The Lady Vanishes. It was written by Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder, who also wrote Lady, and the co-star is Margaret Lockwood, who also starred in The Lady Vanishes. The movie is a wonderful WWII chase film, with excellent performances by Lockwood, Paul Henreid and, especially, Rex Harrision. Professor Bomasch, a Czech scientist who has discovered a new kind of armor, and his daughter, Anna (Lockwood), flee their country for Britain one step ahead of Nazi agents. The professor makes it but his daughter is captured and sent to a concentration camp. A fellow inmate, Karl Marsen (Henreid), befriends her and they manage to escape and make their way across the channel. Anna searches for her father and is directed to a seedy boardwalk song man, Gus Bennett (Harrision), who is in fact a British agent charged with protecting her father. Marsen, however, is a Nazi agent whose job is to find and kidnap the professor and return him to Berlin. This he does, taking the daughter, too, and Gus goes after them. After many adventures, including Gus bluffing his way into Gestapo headquarters as a German officer, a danger-filled journey on the night train to Munich and a rousing escape on a tram line high in the Alps between Germany and Switzerland, Gus succeeds in rescuing them and winning Anna's love. This is a skilled, witty and suspensefull movie in the Hitchcock style. The dialogue is quick, Lockwood is a winning and brave heroine, Marsen is not a cardboard caricature, and the set pieces really work. The train ride is full of urgent moments and clever situations. The climax involving the trams is exciting. Best of all is Rex Harrrison. He's resourceful, skeptical, amusing and charming. He's deliberately second rate as a song plugger, and effortlessly first-rate as a leading man. He might have been a selfish SOB in real life, but he was a magnetic actor. This is another film which is not on DVD, and the VHS tape I have looks the movie's age. You'll need to be tolerant; the transfer is not too good. Still, its worth having.

The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera
I loved this book and I don't even like Opera! "The Phantom of the Opera" a classic supernatural ghost story with surprising roots in reality- there really is an underground lake under the Paris Opera house! Beside a really interesting story there are a number of excellent subplots which show the goings on of the minor players, ballet dancers, opera singers and back stage personal that live and work in the Paris Opera house. It was much better than any of the dozen or so movies and or musicals that were made from it.

Customer Review: Use Your Illusion
Edith Wharton is perhaps best known as a writer who never offered her readers a simple, quote-unquote happy ending. "The Age of Innocence" is her thorough examination of the strictures society placed upon its citizens in the late nineteenth century. It is a tale of a love that can never be lived, a life that can never be set free. It is, quite rightfully, one of the best novels of the twentieth century. Newland Archer is a young man about to be married to May Welland, a woman he admires for her beauty and for his ability to shape her future thoughts and dreams. When her cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, reappears in his life, Arhcer's ideas about love and convention are shaken to the core. For he falls desperately in love with Ellen, but cannot admit it, knowing that any admission or secret life would be unacceptable in his society. And although Ellen returns Archer's love, she would never betray the trust of her family, and will not degrade herself to be with him solely as his mistress. Meanwhile, Archer's wife, May, is not quite as innocent and unknowing as he believes her to be, and Archer must choose between the reality of his life in an unreal world, or the illusion of happiness with the real love of his life. "The Age of Innocence" is truly an ironic title, for no character in the novel is innocent. In the society of Old New York, all secrets were known and hypocrisy was the order of the day. Wharton is an expert at laying bare that which truly goes on in the minds and hearts of human beings. This is a novel that will stand the test of time, for at its core are questions about loyalty and longing that are timeless.
Customer Review: A masterpiece of emotion and obligation
Newland Archer, the protagonist of Edith Wharton's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, opens this story as an almost haughtily optimistic and self-satisfied young man - at the top of New York society, about to announce his engagement to the beautiful and sought-after May Welland, with little to mar what seems to be a life of uninterrupted happiness and fulfillment. Wealth, industry, friends, family, a fiancé he loves dearly....what more could a young man want from life? He can even afford to have a few radical ideas, one of them being the opinion that women should speak their minds and be genuine in their deportment and self-awareness, shaking off - just a little, perhaps - the stringent and elaborate rituals of conformity forced on them by a well-meaning but ultimately hypocritical society. Despite the slightly smug impression we get of Archer at the beginning, it is this examination of himself that makes the reader realize there's more to him than most men of his age and class; that he possesses a sensitivity and longing for what is real, despite that reality's drawbacks, and it endears him to us. Early on he states, to the shock of his friend, that "Women should be free--as free as we are." Soon after, we get this insight into his mind as he reflects on what he sees around him in the marriages of his friends, parents, and relatives, which is precisely what he is determined to avoid between himself and May: "What could he and she really know of each other, since it was his duty, as a "decent" fellow, to conceal his past from her, and hers, as a marriageable girl, to have no past to conceal? What if, for some one of the subtler reasons that would tell with both of them, they should tire of each other, misunderstand or irritate each other? He reviewed his friends' marriages - the supposedly happy ones - and saw none that answered, even remotely, to the passionate and tender comradeship which he pictured as his permanent relation with May Welland. He perceived that such a picture presupposed, on her part, the experience, the versatility, the freedom of judgment, which she had been carefully trained not to possess; and with a shiver of foreboding he saw his marriage becoming what most of the other marriages about him were: a dull association of material and social interests held together by ignorance on the one side and hypocrisy on the other. .....In reality they all lived in a kind of hieroglyphic world, where the real thing was never said or done or even thought, but only represented by a set of arbitrary signs." So, this is where Archer is in life when May's cousin Ellen comes to New York from Paris, fleeing an illustriously-placed but disastrous marriage, and her entrance into New York society is tinged with scandal. When Archer falls in love with Ellen against all his better judgment and to what he knows would be the detriment of everything he deems crucial to his happiness, it's a torturous love that nearly drives him mad. That description may make it sound like a forgettable bit of romance, but forgettable bits of romance don't generally win Pulitzers, and the true heart of this story is about the decisions we make that shape our lives one way or another, and what kind of devastating emotional havoc the `wrong' love can wreak on a person's soul. Archer is forced down an emotionally-tormented path few of us would choose, I think, and in many ways it's both beautiful and tragic to watch his story unfold. I was incredibly moved by it. As mentioned, The Age of Innocence won Wharton the Pulizer Prize for fiction in 1921, making it the first time a woman had ever won the award.

War of the Worlds (1949)

War of the Worlds (1949)
After the success of 1950's Destination Moon and 1951's When Worlds Collide, visionary producer George Pal brought the classic H.G. Wells story of a Martian invasion to the big screen, and it instantly became a science fiction classic and winner of the 1953 Academy Award for Best Special Effects. It's a work of frightening imagination, with its manta-ray spaceships armed with cobra-like probes that shoot a white-hot disintegration ray. As formations of alien ships continue to wreak destruction around the globe, the military is helpless to stop this enemy while scientists race to find an effective weapon. Gene Barry and Ann Robinson play the hero and heroine roles that were de rigueur for movies like this in the '50s, and their encounter with one of the Martians is as creepy today as it was in '53. It finally takes an unseen threat--simple Earth bacteria--to conquer the alien invaders, but not before War of the Worlds has provided a dazzling display of impressive special effects. As memorable for its sound effects as for its spectacular visions of destruction, this is a movie for the ages--the kind of spectacular that inspired little kids such as Steven Spielberg (not to mention Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, whose Independence Day cribs liberally from the plot) and still packs a punch. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: EXCELLENT GENE BARRY VEHICLE
The story is updated to the 1950s for this film, and the setting is moved from the environs of London to southern California. Dr. Clayton Forrester (Gene Barry), a world renowned physicist, is on a fishing vacation in Pine Summit when a giant meteorite lands in the hills above the nearby town of Linda Rosa. Along with the residents, he goes to investigate. At the impact site, he meets Sylvia van Buren (Ann Robinson) and her uncle, Pastor Dr. Matthew Collins (Lewis Martin). Finding the meteorite too hot to examine closely, he decides to wait in town for the meteorite to cool down. Later, after most of the people have gone home, the meteorite (actually a Martian spacecraft) unscrews and opens, disgorging a Heat-Ray device. When the three men who remained behind approach in friendly greeting, it kills them without warning. Forrester and the sheriff are also attacked when they return, but survive. Amid reports of numerous other meteors landing throughout the world, a regiment of United States Marines arrives and surrounds the Martian ship. The meteorite deploys three war machines. Pastor Collins approaches the Martians in peace, but they kill him with their Heat-Ray without attempting to communicate. Afterwards, the Marines pellet the Martians with shells and artillery; however, the Martians are revealed to have an impenetrable forcefield protecting them. After enduring the assault, the Martians fight back with their Heat-Ray and disintegrator rays, vaporizing most of the forces surrounding them and move out. Forrester and Sylvia flee, along with the rest of the civilians. After their plane crashes, they take shelter in a nearby abandoned farmhouse. They are trapped in the basement when another meteorite crashes into the house. The couple comes in contact with a Martian when the creature leaves its war-machine to look around. They manage to fight it off and escape to Los Angeles, eventually rejoining Forrester's co-workers, who are trying to find a way to defeat the aliens. With a sample of Martian blood and an electronic eye from the war machines, the scientists learn a good deal about Martian physiology; particularly, they learn that they are highly intelligent, but physically weak and anemic creatures. They then leave to observe the United States Air Force drop an atomic bomb on the Martians advancing on Los Angeles. This also fails to destroy the machines and the government initiates large-scale evacuations of cities in danger of attack. Refugees head for shelters set up in the Rocky Mountains while the army plans to hold them off for as long as possible. However, widespread panic among the general populace scatters the research group and their equipment is wrecked. In the confusion, Forrester and Sylvia become separated. All seems lost, with humanity helpless before the onslaught. Forrester frantically searches for Sylvia in the burning ruins of a Los Angeles under attack. He finally finds her with other survivors awaiting the end in a church. Suddenly, they see an approaching Martian war machine crash. Upon investigating, Forrester realizes that the seemingly all-powerful invaders are dying. As in the book, they have no defense against Earth's viruses and bacteria. The film opens with a prologue in black and white and switches to Technicolor at the opening title sequence. George Pál originally planned for the final third of the film to be in 3-D to correlate with the final attack by the Martians. The plan was dropped prior to actual production of the film, presumably being deemed too expensive.[1] World War II stock footage was used to produce a montage of destruction to show the worldwide invasion, with armies of all nations joining together to fight the invaders. Wells had used the second half of his novel to make a satirical commentary on civilization and the class struggle. Lyndon did not write the satire into the movie, though he did add a religious theme (in contrast to Wells original novel), to the point that the Martians begin dying shortly after blasting a church. The city of Corona was used as the shooting location for the town of "Linda Rosa". Join the Gene Barry Group hi-5.com
Customer Review: Great Movie
This movie is one hour and twenty-five minutes long and war released on August 26, 1953. The story begins Linda Rosa, California where a comet like ball crash lands on Earth. A physicist comes to investigate the comet, but can do nothing til morning. Meanwhile he is attend a sqaure dance with the local villagers when the power goes out. He goes back to investigate the comet and lo and behold flying saucers emerge from it and Earth is now under attack. It ends with the aliens not being immune to Earth's viruses and bacteria. The special effects are great. Though the soul alien in the movie did not get much air time, it did look a pretty scary for an alien of the 1950s era. The movie won an Academy Awards for Best Special Effects (1954). The would make a great addition for anybody sci-fi collection.

Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide

Customer Review: Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide
My wife was disappointed in the annual books as they did not contain a lot of the older movies. This book resolved the problem.
Customer Review: Excellent Guide - Covers Its Ground
This book covers the old movies up to about 1960. In my opinion some of the really old ones it covers could be passed up (e.g. silent films) and may have been included to bulk up the book a bit. Still, I'm sure there must be fans of these that would be unable to find this info elsewhere and it may be valuable for them. This gives excellent coverage to these older pre-1960 movies and can be indespensible as a companion to the frequently inadequate descriptions given in the onscreen guides of satellite TV. I highly recomend it for that. Unlike the 2009 Guide, this one is a nice size and with reasonable size type so it is easy to find a movie and read the description. Now, if Maltin would just dump all of the movies covered in this Classic Guide out of the new book, the new book (2009 Guide) would be better served. Given that the number of movies is expanding exponentially, the newer guides should be broken into 2 sections, as well. Overall, Maltin needs this Classic Guide, a Guide for 1960 - 1990, and a Guide for 1990 - Present (2009 or whatever). Each guide could be comprehensive and a lot better than the inadequate and disappointing 2009 Guide tome. The single best source for all movies, though, is AllMovie.com. NBow, they need to take the descriptions off that website and put them into a 3 volume work as the truly Ultimate Movie Guide!

Casino Royale (movie tie-in) (James Bond 007)

Casino Royale (movie tie-in) (James Bond 007)
In the first of Ian FlemingÂ's James Bond novels, 007 declares war on Le Chiffre, French communist and paymaster of the Soviet murder organization SMERSH. The battle begins in a fifty-million-franc game of baccarat, gains momentum during BondÂ's fiery love affair with a sensuous lady spy, and reaches a chilling climax with fiendish torture at the hands of a master sadist. For incredible suspense, unexpected thrills, and extraordinary danger, nothing can beat James Bond in his inaugural adventure.
Customer Review: YOU CAN BET YOUR LIFE ON IT
In his first published adventure, Ian Fleming's James Bond is despatched to the dangerous arcade of Casino Royale, where nothing is ever as it seems, to gamble a decadent Soviet operative known as "Le Chiffre" into oblivion in a winner-take-all game of Baccarat. But the unexpected lurks behind every corner, and Bond must put his trust in the beautiful but enigmatic Vesper Lynd. In the end, only one man can hold the winning card... CASINO ROYALE is chronologically the first of Ian Fleming's legendary Bond novels, and indeed it is one of the finest. Atmosphere and characterization are at the heart of Fleming's Bond stories, and CASINO ROYALE is exceptional even by Fleming's usually high standards. Bright lights and the air of expensive cigarettes radiate from each page, and the whole is a taut, rarely-equalled example of the Cold War thriller. 007 himself is introduced as the ruthless, rather sinister assassin who set the archetype for all secret agents to come, despite the best efforts of some of the movies to turn him into a playboy with a gun fetish. The unreadable Vesper Lynd adds sugar & spice to the plot, and in my opinion makes for one of the two most alluring of all the Bond Girls (rivalled only by Tracy from ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE), and the intense hot or cold affair between she and Bond is a real stinger. Despite the relatively spartan action scenes, notwithstanding one of the most horrific torture scenes in popular literature and a purely theoretical weakness which the excellent 2006 movie more than makes up for, CASINO ROYALE never wants for suspense, and once it's begun the novel is almost impossible to put down. A classic not only of the spy genre but as a drama, CASINO ROYALE is most heartily recommended.
Customer Review: A Pleasant Taste of Pre-Digital Espionage Fiction
I was intrigued to read the book after seeing the movie, which i really enjoyed, and wWas excited to see that some of the film's strains (there were things that seemed incongrous) were efforts to stay loyal to this book. In surprising measure, the film does. "Casino Royale" gives the impression of a much more human Bond than the film character, and the new film captured that as well. Fleming's 007 is not the unflappable quip-ready playboy made popular in cinema, instead favoring the grittier portrayal carried off in the new film. It's not all grit, there is an element of sentimentality that seeps through in the novel, and many of Bond's interior monologues in the novel are reminiscient of Bronte. All in all, I found the novel a quick reading and enjoyable spy story. As someone in my 20s, it was interesting to get a taste of espionage fiction from before the digital age, and Fleming's narrative is happily not overburdened by the gadgetry of even the early Bond films.

The Battlestar Galactica has seen it all and endured hundreds of conflicts. The ship is centered on its Combat Information Center (CIC), where its commanders can launch offensive and defensive assaults with precision. It's doubtful that there is another ship anywhere in Colonial Space with more heart and soul than this battle-worn behemoth.

Launch into action with this amazingly detailed die-cast metal vehicle. Vehicle has an opening hangar bay and comes with display stand. Measures 3".
Customer Review: Cool model!
I ordered this at least a year ago for WAY less than they're selling them for now! It seems the product has roughly tripled in price with the increased success of the TV series. At any rate, the model is very realistic and just what I expected from looking at the photo. It can be snapped onto its plastic stand and rotated. And it looks great on the desk next to the computer! A recommended collectible.
Customer Review: A nice Viper model, but it's less than 3
The model is actually very well detailed for a 3 Incher. Some vendors are selling it for +$[...] which is too high. I got it for around $[...] and I still feel I paid alot for it. It doesn't bother me that it came with a STAR WARS stand instead of a BSG one. It appears to be an issue with these titanium models as I've seen others complain of the same thing on this & other BSG models. It has no moving parts like some of the Titanium Star Wars models. It's all die cast except for the cockpit + top fin + guns & mine is a little darker than the one pictured. Looking at the picture, I thought it would be painted like it just rolled off the showroom, but the paint has a "smeared" effect, not exactly battle damage, but it does look like it's been through the worst of times which is quite nice !
