The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman

This 1973 television movie about 110 years of American history as seen through the eyes of a black woman from Louisiana (Cicely Tyson) is a terrific achievement, a window onto racism from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement. Tyson gives a career performance as the title character, whose personal life is inextricably woven into the fabric of the African American struggle for equality. A mixture of the sentimental and the unflinching, this is the kind of educational experience that fully engages a viewer. --Tom Keogh

Customer Review: Bad experience trying to buy DVDs on web.......
About a month ago, we tried to order three DVDs on this site. The first was a Superman collection through a company called OLD-TIME-THEATRE. Even though they sent an immediate response to our payment nearly a month ago, we are unable to reach them by phone or e-mail, but they have not billed us either. The second DVD was the GLEN MILLER story through a company named IMPORT-CDs. Five days after ordering it we get a notification of a refund from them, with no explanation. I guess it is common practice not to explain to customers why vendors are refunding payment? How tough would it have been to drop a customer an e-mail? The third DVD we tried to order that day was a movie called HOLIDAY AFFAIR. There was a picture of the DVD that appeared correct, but the description was of completely differant actors, so we did not order it. I am sure that there are thousands of great transactions everyday on this site, but our experience was not. I'll think twice before ordering here again.

I had to share this video with my mom for Christmas as this is one of my earliest memories from my childhood. I remember watching it on TV and my mother humming the music for days afterwards. I was excited to find the title!

Customer Review: The Never Ending Story really never ends!
The Never Ending Story by Michael Ende is a terrific fantsy book. I enjoyed it very much. My only complaint is that it seems to drag on for far too long. This made the story confusing becuase I had seen the films and had not anticipated the way the story continued past the original film's ending. For some people this could be a bonus. But for me it was a detraction. Througout most of the second half of the book, I just found myself wishing it would end. But I guess if it did, it wouldn't truly live up to its title. What I admire most about The Never Ending Story is the wonderful fantasy creatures and beings that appear within its pages. In my opinion, The Never Ending Story is the most creative and imaginative book I have ever read. It's simply mindblowing the kinds of zany and exotic biings that Ende conjurs up out of his wild imagination. I am still enamored of this book, but I must admit that I still prefer the 1984 Wolfgang Petersen film. To me, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing, and this book is a clear example of that. Still, I recommend this book to all children and fantasy fans, especially that it's a classic.
Customer Review: My daughter's favorite forever
My German friend recommended this book to me 22 years ago and I instantly fell in love with the world Ende had created. I was sad to leave the characters when I finished the book and promised them I would be back when I had my own child. I bought the book when my daughter became 7 and she also fell in love with this world. We shared favorite parts, funny parts, and sad parts, and that was the best part of coming back to Fantastica to me. My daughter is in high school now, but it's still her favorite.

Laurel & Hardy: Slipping Wives

Priscilla Dean is feeling unwanted by her husband and hires Stan Laurel as her paramour to make her husband jealous. Unfortunately for Stan, the couple's butler, Oliver Hardy, takes an immediate dislike to the dimwitted rival, making his life miserable.
Customer Review: A solid pre-teaming short
This is one of Stan and Ollie's earliest pre-teaming shorts, where they were in the same film but not really acting as a team or even put in the same short on purpose. Here they have more interaction and scenes together than they do in a number of their other pre-teaming shorts. Top billing goes to Priscilla Dean. She was one of the top stars at Universal Studios in the Teens and early Twenties, but her star was fading by the time this came along. Hal Roach put a number of fading stars in comedy shorts while their names were still well-known and recognised, kind of giving them a home, however decreased in stature they were by then, until their careers permanently fizzled out. (Probably the best-known star who came to work for Hal Roach Studios under those circumstances was Mae Busch, who is now better-known for her work in L&H comedies than for the features she made when she was a big star earlier in the Twenties.) This short, which was later remade in 1935 as 'The Fixer-Uppers,' concerns a woman who is really hurt and upset that her husband is getting bored of her and not showing her as much affection. Together with a male friend of hers, she conspires to hire a man to make love to her in her husband's presence to make him jealous. (That phrase had a somewhat different connotation back when this short was made; it obviously doesn't mean what it does today, otherwise the censors would have come down on them very severely!) That man turns out to be Stan, who has come to paint the house. He is quite adamant that he doesn't want any part of this plot, but he is forced to wash up, change into nice clothes, and put on the charade of being an important man of letters. Meanwhile the butler (Oliver Hardy) doesn't like what he's seeing, and Stan spends much of the film trying to get away from the woman's seduction attempts. He believes she's cheating on her husband with the other guy who's hanging around the house, and this leads to a classic case of confused identities that eventually all works out for the good. It's not perhaps an ideal introduction to the boys, but it is pretty solid, funny, and underrated, and not one of their pre-teaming shorts that you'd recommend staying away from until you're more of a fan either.

If this great film doesn't spark some semblance of emotion in you, check your pulse. You MUST be dead, because Robert Donat is completely, thoroughly disarming. What a masterful performance, and at such a young age. And Greer Garson . . . what can I say? A temple to loveliness. What an incredible woman. This film is probably the best argument for watching older b&w classics. But for more excellent Robert check out his 'Count of Monte Cristo.' If you are impressed by Greer Garson, and by the way you're insane to be not, then be sure and check out 'Mrs. Miniver.'

A single viewing of this movie captured my imagination, instilled a sense of adventure, and left me with a desire to pursue my life with ambition and confidence. I was nine years old when I saw it, and I'm 35 now. I can say without question, this is one of the best children's movies ever made.
Customer Review: Skip the movie - read the book!
My Side of the Mountain is a wonderful book. It explores a boy's adventures in living off the land on his grandfather's old farmland in the Catskill Mountains. He befriends several forest critters and raises and trains a peregrine falcon while learning how to survive in nature. That said, I looked forward to seeing the movie. Unfortunately, the movie has no relationship to the book except for the name of the boy (Sam Gribley)and the name of the falcon (Frightful). The location was moved to Quebec (no mention of grandpa's farm so Sam is clearly trespassing now), a pet raccoon named Gus was added (why?), Frightful is killed off (why? There are 2 more books in the trilogy), Sam is there with a microscope to do algae experiments (and the purpose of this is....?) and Sam learns his lesson (?) after being snowed in for 2 days and goes home at Christmas. Forgetting the lack of relevence to the book, the movie story does not play well on its own. Forget this dvd - it is definitely not worth it.

Customer Review: I wish they still made movies like this!
This is a great little film that shows how clever and funny some of the old 39's and 40's movies can be. With a cast of actors that frequented movies by classy directors like Capra and Sturges, the movie has all the pieces to make a successful romp. This is definitely slapstick, and if you get squeamish with scenes of total destruction, there will be a time or two when you will want to close your eyes! However, I am not a fan of that type of destruction, and I thought the movie was terrific. Jean Arthur is quite adorable and endearing in most of what she does, and I would have to say she lives up to that in "Easy Living" as well. Her character comes across as sincere and believable, and this allows her "antics" to succeed. Ray Milland and Edward Arnold are also very good. They don't necessarily have momentous occasions, but they provide the solid acting that you would expect from them. Of course, William Demarest has his almost obligatory appearance in the movie, and he always adds a little spice. (He was in nearly every single big movie that Sturges was involved in.) Anyway, if you like corny screwball/slapstick comedies that are funny and clever, try "Easy Living." This is great for when you want something that is relaxing and not too long. It's really hard to not smile/laugh during this film!
