Snoopy, Come Home

Snoopy, Come Home
Three years after A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969), Charles Schulz's beloved "Peanuts" characters hit the big screen again in the enjoyable Snoopy, Come Home. This time, everyone's favorite beagle turns the kids' world upside down when he receives a mysterious letter from a girl named Lila and hits the road with best friend Woodstock, evading a sadistic would-be pet owner and other perils along the way. Meanwhile, Charlie Brown is left to wonder: Who is Lila, and will Snoopy ever return? Snoopy, Come Home still holds up well for kids of all ages, though the mod opening sequence and snappy songs by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and other Disney films) are unmistakably from the '70s. Vince Guaraldi's jazzy music is missed, but Thurl Ravenscroft, best known for "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" and the laugh of the Jolly Green Giant, lends his basso profundo to the persistent "No dogs allowed!" (All ages: minor cartoon violence). --David Horiuchi
Customer Review: Good Peanuts Fun
For anyone who truly loves the Peanuts Gang and their pal Snoopy then Snoopy Come Home is for you. It is one more happy chapter in the lives of Schultz's lovable characters. Now, we have to remember the year Snoopy Come Home was released is not up to the grade of most animated movies today, but still worth watching. So, enjoy!
Customer Review: Excellent DVD

Classic Marilyn Monroe Wig Adult

Classic Marilyn Monroe Wig Adult
Includes: blonde wig. Dress and jewelry not included. One size fits most adults.
Customer Review: Terrible Rip-Off!
As others have said, this wig is terrible. It is nothing like the picture, the top of it was a tangled mess which could not be smoothed. Also, the color is not Marilyn blonde but bright white. It looks like a Halloween fright wig, doesn't resemble MM at all. What a waste of money, I wouldn't be caught dead leaving the house or being photographed in this ugly unmanageable thing.
Customer Review: Not happy
Item was not as pictured, wig was a mess and could not be fixed after 2 hours of trying. Had no choice but to wear it as there was not time to get another one. would not order from this company again.

Pandora's Box

Pandora's Box
Pandora's Box, the masterpiece of G.W. Pabst (The Threepenny Opera, The Joyless Street, Diary of a Lost Girl), and one of the most erotic films ever made, is the story of Lulu, an effervescent chorus girl who destroys anyone whose life she has touched, then is murdered by Jack the Ripper. This brilliant adaptation of Wedekind's plays Erdgeist and The Box of Pandora brings out the erotic power of this singular beauty, who lacking all moral sense and devoid of guile and malevolence, does evil unconsciously. Pabst found his ideal Lulu in American actress Louise Brooks. Her remarkable natural presence and sexuality gives this silent classic a timeless modernity.
Customer Review: Fantastic!
This is a fantastic movie that demonstrates how great acting and story telling can be done without computer-generated effects and explicit sex scenes. The actors tell the whole sordid and sad story through their expressions and body language. The cinematography is also amazing. Watching great silent films like this is a real treat, and often shows just how modern film making has lost something.
Customer Review: The Original Big Screen Femme Fatale
Louise Brooks' performance in Pandora's Box is magnetically seductive. It blends predatory sexuality with infuriating naivety. Generations of femme fatales owe their dark magic to Lulu as embodied by Louise. The story is almost mythic: men destroyed by their lust for a fickle vixen who, in the end, brings about her own destruction by attracting the wrong man. I hesitate to say more. Those who haven't seen the film owe it to themselves to see it. Unlike a lot of silent melodramas, Pandora's Box still has potent appeal -- thanks mostly to Brooks' astonishingly natural performance. It's as if she's simultaneously unaware of the camera and diabolically inspired by its cyclops gaze. If you enjoy this, be sure to check out the other film she made with Pabst, Diary of a Lost Girl, which is available on DVD as well. It's a four-star film with another timeless Brooks performance. Louise Brooks is a fascinating legend of the silver screen and Pandora's Box is her crowning achievement.

Hollywood Classics Collectors Edition - Scarlet Street

Hollywood Classics Collectors Edition - Scarlet Street
Kino Video's remastered edition of Scarlet Street finally does justice to one of the best film noir classics of the 1940s. Less than a year after scoring a critical and popular success with The Woman in the Window, director Fritz Lang reunited with stars Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, and Dan Duryea for this fatalistic New York City tale of a meek, middle-aged cashier and aspiring artist named Christopher Cross (Robinson) who unwittingly falls into a trap set by a pair of Greenwich Village con artists (Bennett, Duryea) who plot to sell his paintings and make off with the profits. In addition to Lang's masterful use of studio backlot locations and cinematographer Milton Krasner's exquisite control of light and shadow, the film draws its primary strength from the atypical performance by Robinson (typically so good at playing heavies, and a knowledgeable art collector off-screen) as a hen-pecked husband and self-professed failure whose withered ego makes him especially vulnerable to the false charms of Bennett, a femme fatale as heartless as she is ultimately doomed. Her scandalous behavior on screen and off (Bennett was the wife of producer Walter Wanger and Lang's mistress) and Duryea's pimpish amorality made Scarlet Street both immensely popular and scandalous enough to be banned in three states when the film was released in late 1945, but in Lang's dark vision of corrupted souls and avenging angels, nobody goes unpunished. The ending of Scarlet Street is as unforgiving as it is unforgettable, and in the hands of Fritz Lang, it's the purest essence of film noir at its finest. Kino's DVD release offers a high-definition digital transfer from a 35-millimeter negative preserved by the Library of Congress (in other words, it puts every previous video release to shame), and there's an astute, scholarly commentary by Lang expert David Kalat that puts Scarlet Street into critical perspective with Lang's career and film noir in general. For fans of the genre, this is a must-own DVD. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: More Great Fritz Lang
The Lang direction and visual style is apparent on every frame, and the performance of Edward G. Robinson is among his best, and often strangely neglected. For me, the essence of noir films has as much to do with the bleak outlook on human existence as it does the visual sense, and at the very beginning of this film, we see (IMHO) the single, most perfect noir moment: Chris Cross (Robinson) is given a dinner, a nice little send off for a nice little man. On his way out, a friend asks if Chris is going to ride the train home, as is his normal pattern. Chris has something on his mind though, and chooses to walk instead. That one single moment, that one choice... and because of that, this man will lose his home, his wife, his career and the very thing that makes him want to continue, his art. One moment, one choice, and an entire life is destroyed.
Customer Review: Film Noir Surprise
I don't know if anyone else would agree, but this film seems like a precursor to David Lynch movies especially in the characterizations. It's an incredible film noir. Like Richard Widmark, Dan Duryea could play a weasel very effectively in one movie and then appear as equally effective in another as the good guy. Fritz Lang gives a very quirky edge to all the familiar character types appearing in this film. I saw a faded copy and was still blown away by it. I'm going to order the restored Kino print for my library dvd collection. Even if you don't care for film noir, but like old movies, please see this. Give it a chance to unfold and draw you into it. Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennet, Charles Kemper everyone is excellent.

Sidewalks of London

Sidewalks of London
Customer Review: Buskers
KINO markets "Sidewalks of London" under its alternate title, ST. MARTIN'S LANE. The title is the address of Charles Staggers (Laughton), who is one of a dying breed-- a busker. These street performers were a common sight in London in the early 20th Century. For coppers and shillings, they'd "work" a crowd waiting in line outside a legitimate theater. Dancers, musicians, comedians, tumblers, singers and orators all plied their wares then passed the hat around. Liberty (Leigh) picks pockets when she's not dancing for coin. After he sees her dance, Charles asks Libby to be his busking partner. They later form a quartet with two musicians. Songwriter Prentiss gives the talented Libby a foot up onto the legitimate stage; she eventually becomes a star. (Also outstanding here is virtuoso harmonicanist Larry Adler, who plays both on-screen and off.) ST. MARTIN'S LANE may be found on a KINO DVD double feature with WING OF THE MORNING (1940), starring Henry Fonda. Also available from KINO is the British classic, SOUTH RIDING (1938), with Edna Best, Ralph Richardson and Edmund Gwenn. (VHS only) Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 viewer poll rating found at a film resource website. (7.0) St. Martin's Lane ("Sidewalks of London") (UK-1938) - Charles Laughton/Vivien Leigh/Rex Harrison/Larry Adler/Tyrone Guthrie/Maire O'Neill/Gus McNaughton
Customer Review: Sidewalks of London
Vivien Leigh was in this movie right before GONE WITH THE WIND!!!!!!!! But this movie is about a homeless girl who is named Liberty , who then a big man meets Libby and takes her under his wing and gives her a home, and a job in his street performing group. But then abother man meets Libby, and makes her a star and super famous and wealthy. But Libby wants Charles Laughton. This movie is not a MUST SEE but it is rather good. The scenes without Vivien are kind of slow moving and dull, and the movie has the worst ending. The absoulute worst ending in a movie. She runs after Charles Laughton, and then he goes to his crew and starts a poem. Leaving Libby back to the thearter. IF YOU LIKE VIVIEN LEIGH, I'D RECCOMEND YOU SEE THIS FILM

Customer Review: THANK HEAVENS FOR HAROLD!!
My Daughter (4 and 1/2) has practically worn out this DVD, she watches it so much. It is a video that is simple in nature and peaceful. She is not a fan of movies that blow things up and violence, nor am I. She has even passed on this love of Harold to her cousins (ages 8 and 6). When they come over they specically ask if they can watch it. When we brought this DVD with us abroad all her cousins who are under the age of 8 loved it as well. (they are fans of rockem sockem movies) So I found it to be a nice change for them. Language was not a barrier for them to understand what was happening....NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE MIND AND THE POWER OF IMAGINATION A CHILD HAS!!!! THANK YOU HAROLD!!!
Customer Review: My kids love Harold
My 22 month old and 3-1/2 old boys just love this Harold video. It is a great video to watch before bedtime as it has a very calming effect on my boys.

Camille: The Lady of the Camellias (Signet Classic)

Camille: The Lady of the Camellias (Signet Classic)
Customer Review: The book is a classic.
I only bought the book for a friend named "Camille" who did not know anything about her literary namesake. I am not sure off the top of my head if this is the same author who wrote "The Three Musketeers." or not. I think this is the son. I can highly recommend the original B&W movie version starring Greta Garbo. I don't get emotional easily but the movie moved me. Also, obvious why Garbo was considered one of the "great" ones.
Customer Review: Tres belle y magnifique!
This was a beautifully written and tragic story of the love between a man and a sadly fated courtesan. This novel is quite a page turner, and it's very emotional as well. However, it didn't make me cry or feel deeply sorry for the characters at the end, just a bit sad. This is a nice classic, but it's not a deeply significant classic to read, nor is it one where you will get some deep, insight lessons from. If you are into romance, drama, and tragedy, then this book is for you. Just don't expect it to change your life or anything.

Customer Review: Sci-Fi Classic Impersonator
This CD has a good collection of songs from Sci-Fi movies. However, the songs are not the original movie music. While some may sound very close (2001 was a good copy) others are a bit disappointing. If your looking for inexpensive sci-fi music, this is a good option. Otherwise stick to the original soundtracks.

Agatha Christie's Poirot - The Classic Collection, Vol. 2

Agatha Christie's Poirot - The Classic Collection, Vol. 2
Snooty, fastidious, self-important--and yet delightful. Agatha Christie's famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, continues to engage his "little grey cells" in this mammoth and consistently strong collection of nine feature-length murder mysteries, all full of Christie's skillful twists and cunning misdirection. In the best of these, such as The ABC Murders or One, Two, Buckle My Shoe, the murders are only the tip of the iceberg, hiding or indirectly revealing a more insidious plot. The Classic Collection 2 ranges from the very first Poirot story--The Mysterious Affair at Styles, which also introduces the recurring characters Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser) and stalwart Chief Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson) as Poirot investigates the murder of a family's matriarch--to later stories like Hickory Dickory Dock, in which Poirot's secretary Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran) makes one of the only mistakes in her precise career (an event of more import to some fans than the actual mystery, which revolves around diamond smuggling in a student hostel). The set also includes Death in the Clouds (in which murder is committed on an airplane, right under Poirot's nose), Peril at End House (which culminates in a staged seance), Dumb Witness (in which a fox terrier helps Poirot suss out the truth), Murder on the Links (in which Hastings, so often smitten with a suspect, loses his heart completely), and Hercule Poirot's Christmas (a particularly colorful mystery, featuring a fiery Spanish girl and a very unsavory murder victim).

Ironically, television makes Christie's work even stronger. Though always prized for the intricate mechanics of her mysteries, her characters are more often dismissed as flat. In the hands of wily British thespians, these same characters become vivid and eccentric. Though casts include a few familiar faces, including Polly Walker (Rome, Enchanted April), Damian Lewis (Band of Brothers, Friends & Crocodiles), and Christopher Eccleston (Heroes, Dr. Who), most of the actors are capable unknowns. But they're all supporting players to David Suchet, who, after playing Poirot in more than 60 TV movies, completely owns the role. Suchet brings the perfect blend of warmth, prickliness, and obsession to the finicky sleuth, who refuses to overlook inconvenient details; every loose thread must be explained or he will not rest. The Classic Collection 2 features an engaging documentary that, though titled Agatha Christie's Garden, is a well-wrought biographical look at the author, filtered through her beloved estate and narrated by Pam Ferris (Rosemary & Thyme). --Bret Fetzer
Customer Review: As the brilliant Belgium detective, David Suchet shines!.
Anyone, who doesn't believe Suchet is the quintessential Hercule Poirot, must be part of a significantly small minority! This reviewer feels unable to accept, any other portrayal of the Belgium sleuth. It has been thus, since Suchet's first appearance on my TV screen. It is rare to find, one's much loved imagined fictional character, so accurately personified in an actor. Suchet is completely- and utterly - believeable, as Hercule Poirot. Additionally, and very importantly, Suchet's acting is simply superb - as is the work of the main supporting cast as Chief Inspector Japp, Captain Hastings and, even, Miss Lemon. It will be a long, long time, before any other actor attempts to portray Poirot - on stage or screen. It will be a long, long time, before anyone feels it a 'good business venture', to fund any other portrayal of Poirot. Suchet has made the character his own, and this is exstremely rare. It is, however, extremely complimentary to David Suchet. If Agatha Christie's works please - or even if they don't, Suchet's Poirot will delight and please virtually everyone. An excellent series, indeed!
Customer Review: Poirot in Perfection.
Hercule Poirot is one of the most famous detectives in literary history. Yet, strangely, except for his portrayal by Albert Finney in the star-studded movie version of "Murder on the Orient Express," for a long time there did not seem to be an actor who could convincingly bring to life the clever, dignified little Belgian with his unmistakable egg-shaped head, always perched a little on one side, his stiff, military, slightly upward-twisted moustache, and his excessively neat attire, which had reached the point that "a speck of dust would have caused him more pain than a bullet," as Agatha Christie introduced him through his friend Captain Hastings's voice in their and her own very first adventure, "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" (1920). But leave it to British television to finally find the perfect Poirot in David Suchet, who after having had the dubious honor of playing a rather dumbly arrogant version of Scotland Yard Chief Inspector Japp in some of the 1980s' movies starring Peter Ustinov as Poirot, was finally allowed to move center stage in the Granada/ITV series broadcast from 1989 onwards, which was later continued by A&E and includes 36 shorter episodes based on (almost all of) Christie's Poirot short stories, as well as to date 25 movie-length features released on DVD, based on a number of her most celebrated Poirot novels. (Hopefully due to be transferred to DVD in short order are the episodes broadcast in 2008 -- see listing below --, which leaves as yet to be re-adapted for the small screen, most notably, "Murder on the Orient Express" [1934] and Poirot's final case, "Curtain" [published 1975, but written in the 1940s].) And the match is spot-on, not only physically but also, and more importantly so, in terms of personality. Suchet shares Poirot's inclination towards pedantry: "I like things to be symmetrical ... If I put two things on the mantelpiece, they have to be exactly evenly spaced," he said in an interview, comparing his real-life persona to that of Poirot. But, he added, unlike his on-screen alter ego, "I don't need the same sized eggs for breakfast!" Although previously not interested in mysteries, his habitually meticulous research allowed him to quickly become familiar with Christie's Belgian sleuth and the workings of his little grey cells -- and to slip so much into Poirot's skin that I, for one, can no longer pick up a Poirot book without instantly hearing Suchet's voice as that of the great little detective. After bringing together the series's 36 shorter episodes in "The Classic Collection, Volume 1," this box set contains the nine movie-length features originally produced by Granada Films and first broadcast on ITV. Next to Mr. Suchet, Hugh Fraser stars as the detective's indefatigable sidekick Captain Hastings, whom the screenplays, alas, make come across as more of a well-educated but vacuous gentleman than do the written originals narrated from his point of view. (This is virtually my only quibble with the series -- and that although Granada and ITV did so well in debumblifying Sherlock Holmes's friend and chronicler Dr. Watson!) Philip Jackson, on the other hand, gives us an admirably sturdy, down-to-earth incarnation of Chief Inspector Japp, and Pauline Moran virtually inhabits Poirot's epitome of a secretary, Miss Lemon; whose role, like those of Hastings and Japp, is added into a number of episodes not originally featuring them, thankfully without greatly disturbing the stories' narrative flow and setting. The episodes contained in this set are: The Mysterious Affair at Styles (written 1920; Granada/ITV 1990) Peril at End House (written 1932; Granada/ITV 1990) The ABC Murders (written 1935; Granada/ITV 1992) Death in the Clouds (written 1935; Granada/ITV 1992) One, Two, Buckle My Shoe (written 1940; Granada/ ITV 1992) Hercule Poirot's Christmas (written 1938; Granada/ITV 1995) Hickory Dickory Dock (written 1955; Granada/ITV 1995) Murder on the Links (written 1923; Granada/ITV 1996) Dumb Witness (written 1937; Granada/ITV 1996) The movie-length features later produced by A&E -- and not contained in this collection but available in separate box sets -- are (to date): The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (written 1926; A&E 2000) Lord Edgeware Dies (written 1933; A&E 2000) Murder in Mesopotamia (written 1936; A&E 2001) Evil Under the Sun (written 1941; A&E 2002) Sad Cypress (written 1939; A&E 2003) Five Little Pigs (written 1941; A&E 2003) Death on the Nile (written 1937; A&E 2004) The Hollow (written 1946; A&E 2004) The Mystery of the Blue Train (written 1928; A&E 2005) Cards on the Table (written 1936; A&E 2005) After the Funeral (written 1953; A&E 2005) Taken at the Flood (written 1948; A&E 2006) And, last but not least, the 2008 season consists/will consist of: Appointment with Death (written 1938) Mrs. McGinty's Dead (written 1952) Cat Among the Pigeons (written 1959) Third Girl (written 1966) Hallowe'en Party (written 1969) Also recommended: The Mysterious Affair at Styles: Hercule Poirot's First Case The Murder of Roger Ackroyd: A Hercule Poirot Mystery (Agatha Christie Collection) Agatha Christie: Five Complete Hercule Poirot Novels - Murder on the Orient Express / Thirteen at Dinner / The ABC Murders / Cards on the Table / Death on the Nile Poirot in the Orient (Hercule Poirot) Hercule Poirot's Casebook Agatha Christie's Poirot - The Classic Collection Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express Death on the Nile

Customer Review: Unbelievable artistry.
If anyone wants to know why Chaplin was such a huge star and remains a legend to this day they just need to watch him at work in this series. A graceful, athletic, and uniquely artistic performer he had many imitators but none of them came close to his ability. Many of the films in this series are not available anywhere else. It's also a great historical record that reflects the early 1920's; the autos, clothing, apartment interiors and furniture; the way things were 80 years ago; the way our great grandparents lived.
Customer Review: Look for better editions of Chaplin
Please Note: This review only refers to "Chaplin Collection by Madacy" It sometimes appears under other titles that have the same films but it is not intended to describe those transfers. This set is boxed up very nicely. I thought that it would make a great gift. The quality of the transfer is disappointing but the worst pain is the sound! There is no attempt whatsoever to match any music to the action. If that isn't bad enough the recordings they are using have talking on them! You hear the musicians do some ... little skits about police and firemen. Obviously the individuals who created this collection didn't give the slightest effort to making it even a functionally entertaining experience. Every time the voices start it is like a train wreck to the story you are watching. They must have put this together on their coffee break. You will pay a bit more for other collections but it will be worth it!!

Winnie the Pooh Storybook Classics Collection

Winnie the Pooh Storybook Classics Collection
The homogenized Disney version of Pooh Bear is so firmly established by now that it has virtually supplanted the classic A.A. Milne/Ernest Shephard renditions of the Hundred Acre Wood characters, introduced in a series of British children's books first published in the 1920s. This initial installment won director Wolfgang Reitherman (The Jungle Book) a 1966 Oscar for Best Animated Short Film, and at the time the prize seemed a bad joke, a self-administered pat on the back for deflavorized commercial kid-culture. The Disneyfication of the planet has progressed to the point that this early, gentle, tuneful outing looks pretty benign, almost a beloved artifact in its own right. The sickly songs by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman (Mary Poppins) qualify as camp classics. The inimitable growly tones of Sterling Holloway, as Pooh, are a definite asset, although the melancholy donkey Eeyore (voice by Ralph Wright, who also wrote the screenplay) is probably the most successful page-to-screen translation, lugubrious and droll at the same time. --David Chute
Customer Review: The Best.
Adapted from Winnie-The-Pooh(1926) and The House At Pooh Corner (1928)by A.A. (alan Alexander) Milne(1882-1956),Illustrated by E.H. (Ernie Howard) Shepard (1879-1976).The main characters are Christopher Robin Milne and Winnie-The-Pooh(the stuffed bear).4 summers ago, when I was 6 1/2 ,I went to Target Drug store -the one in Walnut Creek,CA Usa to be exact-I received Winnie-The-Pooh (1966).It is a great toddler video. But eventhough I am NOT a toddler anymore, I still LOVE it.This wasn't really what you would call a movie. It was just a theatrical short viewed before a movie in theatres to enjoy.Only the 1hour films by Disney are movies. Besides,it's only about 25 minutes. It starred Sterling Halloway(1899-1992)as pooh, Bruce Reitherman(who also did the voice of Mowgli in The Jungle Book)(1956-)as Christopher Robin,Hal Smith(1916-1994)as Owl and Ralph Wright as Eeyore. It also featured John Fiendler (1925-) as Piglet. The 5 songs were "Winnie-The-Pooh","When I up-down,touch the ground","I'm so rumbily in my tumbily","I'm just a little black rain cloud" and "Hooray!".The last of the the theatrical shorts to be produced by Walt Disney(1902-1966).It was the first theatrical short about Pooh Bear. The animation was great!I love the opening piece of music.THe A.A. milne books were good, too!Ever since that "willy nilly silly ole bear"was first brought to life in theatres,He was one of the most best-loved Disney characters in all 7 continents.TTFN
Customer Review: A timeless classic
This is a wonderfully charming tape, that is a true classic for kids and parents to share together. In the story, Pooh tries to get honey to fill his honey pot. He climbs a tree, and eventually gets stuck in the rabbit hole. It features Sterling Holloway (1899-1992) as Pooh, Junius Matthews (1890-1978) as Rabbit. Also features John Fiedler (1925-) as Piglet, and Hal Smith (1916-1994) as Owl. I recommend this video to everyone who loves classic movies.

My Best Girl (Silent)

My Best Girl (Silent)
In My Best Girl, Mary Pickford demonstrates the winsome charm that won her the title "America's Sweetheart." She plays Maggie Johnson, a sensible stockroom girl at Merrill's, a five-and-ten-cent store. This is the heyday of the big five-and-dimes and Robert Merrill (Hobart Bosworth), the store's wealthy owner, is clearly a stand-in for F.W. Woolworth. The opening shot of Maggie displays Pickford's prodigious gift for physical comedy. She stumbles onto the selling floor laden with pots and pans, kicking them out of her way and wearing them like shoes. Then, when a salesgirl takes a break, Maggie is given the chance to be a salesgirl herself for a fateful few moments.

Maggie's first and only customer is the owner's son, Joe Merrill, (fresh-faced and sunny Charles "Buddy" Rogers). Maggie has no clue of the young man's pedigree, as he is slumming as "Joe Grant." His father has insisted that he work his way up as a humble store clerk without benefit of his famous name. The chemistry between Joe and Maggie is instantly apparent. Maggie takes him down to the stockroom, where he's helpless with the simplest tasks. "You know, you're awfully dumb," she tells him. But thanks to her patient training, he's eventually promoted to the position of her boss. (It's an appealing role reversal of the principals in the "Pygmalion"/"My Fair Lady" tale.) In the meantime, of course, they fall in love.

The moment when Maggie realizes Joe's true identity is stunning. She runs back to her humble family on "Goat Hill": fumbling father, (Lucien Littlefield), lachrymose mother (Sunshine Hart), and reprobate sister (Carmelita Geraghty). Is Maggie and Joe's love affair doomed? Or will they sail away to paradise together? Only those who see My Best Girl can learn the answers to these burning questions. --Laura Mirsky
Customer Review: Beautiful, Romantic, Funny
Did you know Mary Pickford met her 3rd husband, Charles "Buddy" Rogers during casting for this film? Anyway, that's what gives this movie an extra intrigue for me. I mean, here she was married to the dashing Douglas Fairbanks at the time when she's canoodling with Buddy Rogers in the movie... And Buddy's sooo handsome and charming! (Have you seen him in 'Old Man Rhythm' 1933) Mary's performance is wonderful too, she's got the character down (her mannerisms and facial expressions are right on). So, endearing, this movie is one of my fave silents.
Customer Review: When You Gotta Pick a Pickford Flick...
This is the Pickford Flick to Pick! You simply can't go wrong with MY BEST GIRL. The plot is one you've seen a million times, but it just doesn't matter. This film is so engrossing and transporting that you'll swear it's all brand new. The performances, direction, settings, music, humor, you name it -- all are pitch perfect. If you've never seen a silent film, this is the one to see. If you know someone who thinks silents aren't worth seeing, show them this one. If you'd like to see a silent film that really holds up in the 21st century, search no further. If you're feeling down or depressed, see this film. If you need a date movie in a pinch, grab this one. If you'd just like to sit back, relax and watch a DVD that's fun, entertaining and top-notch in virtually every way... well, you know the answer. If there is a flaw -- and this is nitpicking -- it would be an extended sequence toward the end that veers dangerously close to going over the top. Otherwise, it's sweet, charming, romantic and old-fashioned in the best possible sense, but never cloying or saccharine. It's simple, straightforward, predictable... and perfect. MY BEST GIRL is one of the very few films, silent or otherwise, that I can't imagine anyone disliking. And it has tremendous rewatchability -- an important factor when considering a purchase. A word about the new musical score: David Michael Frank NAILS this movie. This is, hands down, one of the best silent film scores I've heard. It adds major impact to an already strong film, and don't be surprised if the breezy themes bounce around your head for weeks after viewing. Am I gushing? You better believe it! After writing all of this, I just can't help myself... I gotta go watch MY BEST GIRL!

FREDERICK: While other mice are gathering food for the winter, Frederick sits on the stone wall. When the dreary weather comes and the food runs out, it's Frederick who saves the day. IT'S MINE: Three selfish frogs bicker all day long. It's mine! It's mine! It's mine! But a bad storm and a big brown toad help them realize that sharing is much more fun. CORNELIUS: Unlike other crocodiles, Cornelius walks upright, does tricks and sees things no other crocodile can. What will Cornelius' crocodile friends think?
Customer Review: Great Video
My 2 year old son loves this DVD and decided to bring it to his friend's house. His friend is handicapped and she loves the DVD as well. It is calm and true to the stories and didn't over stimulate them. Both of them watched the DVD and enjoyed the stories and music. I am buying her one so she can have her own copy. GREAT DVD! Highly recommend!
Customer Review: Even mom loves this dvd....
After reading these reviews I wanted to watch this and see if I liked it enough to add it to our Scholastic Video Collection. I got it on inter-library loan and I just love it. It's one of my favorite Scholastic Video Collection dvd's. There are quite a lot of short stories on this one. Swimmy, Frederick, Fish is Fish, It's Mine! and Cornelius are all Leo Lionni stories. They all have similar artwork, which is very colorful and stunning. The animation is great. In Swimmy, some of the fish almost sparkle and are psychedelic-like. I hear lots of oohs and aahs. It's very nice to watch and my 4 year old enjoys the stories. The bonus stories are Each Peach, Pear, Plum (which is kind of a look and find story with no animation. I'm not too crazy that there is a witch in the story), Hush Little Baby (no animation and it's not read but sung) and my daughter's absolute favorite, Let's Give Kitty a Bath. This one is live-action with no dialog. She could watch this Kitty story over and over and over (the other day she did). I admit, it is quite cute. After watching this dvd just one time I ordered it on-line immediately. I know we'll enjoy having it as part of our Scholastic collection. A real winner!

Film Noir Classic Collection, Vol. 1 (The Asphalt Jungle / Gun Crazy / Murder My Sweet / Out of the Past / The Set-Up)

Film Noir Classic Collection, Vol. 1 (The Asphalt Jungle / Gun Crazy / Murder My Sweet / Out of the Past / The Set-Up)
Some boxed sets claim to be definitive, but are haphazardly selected. Not this one. Four of the five titles here can legitimately lay claim to being essentials in the film noir canon, and the fifth, The Set-Up, is a terrific boxing picture with a strong noir atmosphere. If you're a fan of noir--or have no idea what it's all about--this collection is a treat.

Of course, none of these movies were made as "film noir." The term was coined later by French critics to describe the moody, anxious feel of postwar American movies, especially the genre that highlighted duplicitous dames and susceptible men lost in the criminal jungle. Indeed, the title The Asphalt Jungle conveys the edgy urban arena of these pictures. That film is John Huston's masterly 1950 account of a heist, with Sterling Hayden the disenchanted, noirish hero. Joseph H. Lewis's Gun Crazy (1949) is one of the most supercharged (and sexually perverse) of noir films, with John Dall and Peggy Cummins as young criminals in love. Murder, My Sweet (1944) is a straight adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel Farewell, My Lovely. Amid the film's shadowy chiaroscuro, former musical comedy star Dick Powell makes a career-changing transition as Chandler's private dick, Philip Marlowe. Out of the Past puts Robert Mitchum (perhaps the quintessential noir actor) in trouble with gangster Kirk Douglas, complicated by classic femme fatale Jane Greer. Jacques Tourneur provides the evocative direction. And The Set-Up plays out an ingenious boxing tale in "real time," superbly enacted by (former boxer) Robert Ryan. --Robert Horton
Customer Review: My Favorite Box Set
It almost seems superfluous to add to the other reviews, but I'm compelled to tell people that if you haven't seen "Out of the Past", then you must. Fantastic characters, snappy dialogue and a hopping plot; see it. There isn't a clunker in this set; they all pop.
Customer Review: Amazing collection of noir
First of all this the best price on this collection. You can not call your self a noir fan unless you have watched these classics. Out of past consistently rates as one of the greatest movies ever made. All five movies in this set can be found on best 100 film noirs.

The Lost World

The Lost World
Newly restored with fifty percent more footage than any version in seventy years, here is the model for "King Kong," "Jurassic Park" and "Godzilla." A world wide sensation when it opened on February 15, 1925, "The Lost World" is a story of living dinosaurs from the Jurassic age written by the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and starring a cast of stegosaurus, allosaurus, brontosaurus, triceratops, and pterodactyl under the technical direction of Willis H. O'Brien (King Kong, Mighty Joe Young) and a cast of actors under the direction of Harry O. Hoyt.
Customer Review: A Revolutionary Film for Its Time
"The Lost World" was the "Jurassic Park" of the silent film age. While the plot of adventureres finding a South American plateau inhabited by dinosaurs may seem far fetched today, just sit back and let suspended disbelief sink in while enjoying a well made picture. There are plenty of dinosaurs and dinosaur confrontations in the atmospheric jungle/volcanic setting. The stop motion animation and even inflatible stomachs (to simulate breathing) gave the creatures a realism unmatched at the time. True, it lacks the modern special effects of "Jurassic park" or "Walking with Dinosaurs" but viewers should remember just how painstaking the processes that brought these beast "to life" were in the 1920s. The film contains a number of memorable scenes from fierce dinosaur battles to a volcanic eruption to a brontosaurs stomping around London. Overall, an enjoyable and revolutionary silent film.
Customer Review: Slingshot version is not the one to buy
I bought the Slingshot DVD, and it's bad. The images are clean and clear enogh for a movie made in 1925 (this is what saves this from a 1-star grade), but virtually none of the features advertised is present on the disc. Also, this is not a 90-minute cut, but a 66-minute cut. There's action here which barely makes any sense at all; having read the Arthur Conan Doyle novel, I can at least piece things together, but a viewer shouldn't have to do that. To top it off, some engineer on a mission added sound effects -- why? More than anything else, they're just a distraction. I have yet to see this movie at full-length. My thought is that at full length, it'll probably make more sense, at least I hope so. As such, I'm still in the market for a good version of this film.

The 247 Best Movie Scenes in Film History (McFarland Classics)

The 247 Best Movie Scenes in Film History (McFarland Classics)
A unique segment of the movie audience attends for one special scene. It could be a cigar scene (Joseph Cotten asking the young reporter to sneak him a "see-gar" in Citizen Kane), or a funny walk (Walter Brennan's in To Have and Have Not). For these fans a particular scene that brings them back time and time again. This is a witty, wry compilation of the best: accountant scenes, ballpoint pen scenes, food mushing scenes, telephone scenes, and more, arranged by category and described lovingly. The work is a droll delight to read.
Customer Review: Quirky, Delightful Film Humor
A real original--that's Sanford Levine and his delightful, quirky and utterly original take on little-noticed aspects of famous films. A must-read for the film fanatic or anyone with a sense of humor!
Customer Review: Not Bad for a One Joke Premise
Most books I read that have only a one joke premise are boring after the second or third page. Levine's book, however, was short enough and diverse enough to keep my interest for quite a while. Levine has created a fictitious group, the DOA (Devotees of Film Art), composed of enthusiasts of particular types of scenes. There is the Cigar Scene group, who give their "Kipling" award (named after Rudyard Kipling who wrote "Betrothed" which compares cigars to women) a Neck Brace Scene group, a Fluttering Drape group, and several other categories. It's hard to believe there are so many groups out there that get all giddy over such small details. Nevertheless, that is the one joke premise of this book. Levine reports what the he has learned from these groups at their meetings and through their newsletters. Through this fiction we receive a collection of film scenes and brief explanations of how they are important in those sub-sub-subgenres. Levine often has problems with facts, muddling names, misattributing lines of dialogue, and printing the wrong dates from time to time. He also seems to have only seen a very few films in his life, or at least the DOA member groups have seen a limited number of films, as the book uses the same films over and over. The most enjoyable part of this film is that he tells us cute things about various films. Next time I see "The Uninvited" I'll pay more attention to the fluttering drape. After all, the members of the Fluttering Drape Fan Club might actually deserve that respect.

The Bette Davis Collection, Vol. 3 (The Old Maid / All This, And Heaven Too / The Great Lie / In This Our Life / Watch on the Rhine / Deception)

The Bette Davis Collection, Vol. 3 (The Old Maid / All This, And Heaven Too / The Great Lie / In This Our Life / Watch on the Rhine / Deception)
To quote Claude Reins in "Deception," Bette Davis is "all eyes and talent," and both burn bright in six vintage films she made for Warner Bros. between 1939-46. Lesser known than her certified classics, these are not exactly best Bettes, but they are marvelously entertaining and a representative showcase for one of Hollywood's most enduring leading ladies. These eminently repeatable films put Davis (and viewers) through the ringer. Few actresses portrayed characters who suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune so grandly, so regally, so tragically, or so deservedly. As an ad for one of Davis' movies once famously proclaimed, when she was good, she was very good. When she was bad, she was terrific. Just check out John Huston's In This Our Life (1942), this set's unearthed treasure. Bette, flouncing like mad, jilts her fiancée, steals good sister Olivia de Havilland's husband, and promptly drives him to drink and suicide. And she's just getting warmed up! (You don't need Jeannine Basinger's informed commentary to debunk the tantalizing movie legend about a supposed cameo by members of the Matlese Falcon cast. Those gents at the bar look nothing like Bogie and company. But that is Walter, John's father, tending bar). Davis was also very good at being noble. In the prestige project, Watch on the Rhine (1943), based on Lillian Hellman's play and adapted for the screen by Dashiell Hammett, she is the steadfast wife to Paul Lukas, in his Oscar-winning role, as a "legendary figure of the underground movement," who carries on his fight against fascism in Washington, D.C. In The Old Maid (1939), based on the novel by Edith Wharton, Bette allows her cousin (Miriam Hopkins) to give her illegitimate child a respectable name, and, posing as the girl's unsuspecting aunt, must stand by while she grows up spoiled and "horrid." And in All This and Heaven Too (1940), she is a transplanted French schoolteacher who regales her initially scornful students with the true story behind her scandalous past. Deception is another ripping melodrama in which she stars as a pianist whose reunion with her lost love (Paul Henreid), a cellist is threatened by Rains as her arrogant and sadistic Svengali (who's responsible for those minks in her closet). Last but not least is The Great Lie (1941), pitting Bette against Mary Astor, who won an Academy Award as the bitchy concert pianist whose son Bette is raising (long story, but it involves missing aviator George Brent, whom they both love). These films offer such they-don't-make-'em-like-this-anymore pleasures as lush, melodramatic scores by such masters as Max Steiner, hothouse emotions, quotable dialogue, and, of course, indelible character actors at their peaks. These films are seen to their best advantage when viewed as part of each disc's bonus features that recreate an old fashioned "Night at the Movies," complete with theatrical previews, newsreels, short subjects, and Warner Bros. cartoons featuring Porky Pig or Daffy Duck. --Donald Liebenson

Sent by the undersea Kingdom of Seatopia to punish the surface world of mankind for unregulated testing of nuclear weapons, he has hands in the shape of knobby spades, which can be brought together to drill at high speed through the ground. The Bells of St. Mary's

The Bells of St. Mary's
The Bells of St. Mary's works much better for its battle of wills between a parish priest and a head nun than the dopey musical interludes that pepper it, but Bells is still a winning, emotionally satisfying film. This sequel to Going My Way has Father O'Malley (Bing Crosby) taking over the St. Mary's parochial school and finding himself at loggerheads with Sister Benedict (Ingrid Bergman, looking gorgeous even in a habit). There's a wonderful balance to all of this: O'Malley takes a more worldly approach to administration and is wrong just as many times as the nun is when she insists on a more biblical approach. About four subplots suffuse the film, including the story of a young charge from the wrong side of the tracks, and the deteriorating state of St. Mary's in the shadow of a brand-new building (the owner is played by the avuncular Henry Travers). A dear film. --Keith Simanton
