Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 04/05/2005 Starring: Spencer Tracy Katharine Hepburn Run time: 101 minutes Rating: Nr
Customer Review: Just Too Great Comedy!
I love this movie. I've seen more time than I can count and still have a great time with it. Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn follow up their comedy Woman of the Year with another great movie. Both husband and wife are lawyers and they come upon a case where a woman shoots a man who was cheating on her. The wife is played by Judy Holliday and the other woman is Jean Hagen from "Singin' In The Rain. The entire cast is wonderful and the writing is superb. It was written by Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon at the height of their careers. Just a wonderful movie and you'll love it. It's so fun!
Customer Review: Average Film, Mediocre DVD!
This was billed as a comedy but most of the jokes don't age well at all. They belong in the "may raise a smile here and there" category but you'll rarely find yourself capable of raising even a polite laugh throughout. The only "joke" that I thought was good was when Kip tells Amanda that lawyers should never marry lawyers because it eventually leads to more lawyers. Otherwise, it's just another one of the arguments for equality of the sexes which I found boring and barely entertaining. I you want to find a good film with both Hepburn and Tracy doing an excellent acting job together you'll have to look for "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" which ironically happens to be Tracy's last film. As for this film, it doesn't age well and I found myself impatiently waiting for it to end. To make things worse, this DVD version hasn't been restored and so picture imperfections abound throughout the film where we frequently get an irritating black circle that keeps popping up around the top right hand corner of the screen in addition the the white spots everywhere else. The sound quality is very, very poor as well and coupled with no Special Features worth talking about as well makes this a poor value proposition indeed. If you are a die-hard Hepburn/Tracy fan and still want to get this farce then I would recommend waiting for a much better restored version to surface. As it is here, I wouldn't recommend this DVD as worthy of being a coaster for your coffee cup. Not recommended!

Customer Review: Bonus Features Problematic but Good Overall
Mr. Woo will not work after about 2 minutes on most US DVD players. Other bonus features were boring for my kids. For a great detailed review of this DVD and several others, the following soccer help site is a good resource. They highly recommend the main feature portion of this video. http://www.soccerhelp.com/shshop/reviews.php
Customer Review: Over the bar!
I ordered this item months ago and today I just got an email saying: "Though we had expected to be able to send this item to you, we've since found that it is not available from any of our sources at this time. We realize this is disappointing news to hear, and we apologize for the inconvenience we have caused you." "We must also apologize for the length of time it has taken us to reach this conclusion. Until recently, we had still hoped to obtain this item for you." Funny thing is it still says it will ship in 1 to 3 weeks and it is sold and shipped from Amazon. I am sure the DVD is great - This is no knock on "GOL!" Amazon gets the Red Card on this one!

Customer Review: Not the originals but great pieces!
The CD's should have more pieces from Clockwork Orange (Beethoven)! But the whole set is great! There's at least five tracks from each disc that make this a worthy purchase. I love the extended versions that weren't heard in the movies: such as Carmina Burana-The Doors, Adagio for Strings from Platoon, William Tell Overture from Clockwork Orange. Great set!

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe
Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is the now-classic novel of two women in the 1980s: of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women--of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth--who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern kind of Cafe Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder. And as the past unfolds, the present--for Evelyn and for us--will never be quite the same again. . . .
Customer Review: Enjoyable read
I loved the movie and I loved the book, although in differnt ways. The book has a slew of minor characters that would be too confusing for the movie. If you are a fan of Southern fiction, this book is a must. Even if you're not, check out this title.
Customer Review: GREAT BOOK
this book is awesome. read it in like 2 hours. i loved the movie and the book surpassed my expectations!

Eagle

Eagle
Customer Review: The soldier who would rather get a new horse than be a general
This film links a seemingly heartless czarina; a revenge-driven cossack who, though engaging in numerous scriptural debates on the subject with his beloved, finally gets back at his enemy in a fun, pleasurable, and totally inadvertent way; a high-born thief who's such an oblivious father that I wanted to slap him; and a bear. During the movie, we laughed so many times... One thing I notice about silent movies (and it's very refreshing for a slightly deaf person) is that you can talk all you want, and you won't miss anything. Me and my mom were on the edge of our seats towards the end, which rarely happens with us; I had hide my eyes when it got too grim to contemplate. Shame they don't make movies like this anymore.
Customer Review: Valentino as a Russian masked avenger!
Silent screen legend Rudolph Valentino reached enormous heights of popularity in the 1920s before his untimely death not long after starring in "The Eagle", which is a terrible shame because judging by his performance in this film in particular, it is evident that Valentino was more than just a pretty face and had a lot of talent to offer. First cast in some dubious character roles (such as in "The Married Virgin") Valentino was soon established in the typical Hollywood heroic and irresistably charming leading man role for whom all women swooned. "The Eagle" is a good example of this role in which Valentino demonstrates not only his usual magnetism and appeal, but also humour and an overall fine feeling for details and subtle comedy. Very much in the style of Zorro and Robin Hood made popular a few years earlier by Douglas Fairbanks Sr, "The Eagle" is Russia's version of this masked avenger fighting for the poor against injustices, and all in glorious Hollywood style. Although the sets and costumes give the film a distinct Russian flavour, the story is definitely classic Hollywood entertainment all the way with tongue-in-cheek comedy, indispensable romance, standard action and adventure, and the triumph over bad in an unexpected happy ending. The story is quite interesting and entertaining from the very onset which shows how Valentino as a Cossack guard first gets into trouble by resisting the Czarina's romantic advances, resulting in her condemnation of him as a deserter, wanted dead or alive. At home, his dying father has been cheated by a wealthy landlord out of his entire estate, and as the peasants rally around him crying for justice, Valentino dons the Zorro-like mask and becomes known as `The Black Eagle' vowing to take revenge on the greedy landlord, but wouldn't you know it: Valentino's love interest turns out to be the daughter of the man he is after! This enjoyable and satisfying story is enhanced by good acting, especially by Valentino, and the picture quality is very good throughout. The musical accompaniment is a theatre organ and is well-suited to the scenes, although I can imagine that an orchestral score playing Russian-style music would further enhance this film. In any case, "The Eagle" is thoroughly entertaining in true Hollywood style and should satisfy even those who are not great Valentino fans.

CORNELIUS: Unlike other crocodiles, Cornelius walks upright, does tricks and sees things no other crocodile can. What will Cornelius' crocodile friends think?
Customer Review: Great Video
My 2 year old son loves this DVD and decided to bring it to his friend's house. His friend is handicapped and she loves the DVD as well. It is calm and true to the stories and didn't over stimulate them. Both of them watched the DVD and enjoyed the stories and music. I am buying her one so she can have her own copy. GREAT DVD! Highly recommend!
Customer Review: Even mom loves this dvd....
After reading these reviews I wanted to watch this and see if I liked it enough to add it to our Scholastic Video Collection. I got it on inter-library loan and I just love it. It's one of my favorite Scholastic Video Collection dvd's. There are quite a lot of short stories on this one. Swimmy, Frederick, Fish is Fish, It's Mine! and Cornelius are all Leo Lionni stories. They all have similar artwork, which is very colorful and stunning. The animation is great. In Swimmy, some of the fish almost sparkle and are psychedelic-like. I hear lots of oohs and aahs. It's very nice to watch and my 4 year old enjoys the stories. The bonus stories are Each Peach, Pear, Plum (which is kind of a look and find story with no animation. I'm not too crazy that there is a witch in the story), Hush Little Baby (no animation and it's not read but sung) and my daughter's absolute favorite, Let's Give Kitty a Bath. This one is live-action with no dialog. She could watch this Kitty story over and over and over (the other day she did). I admit, it is quite cute. After watching this dvd just one time I ordered it on-line immediately. I know we'll enjoy having it as part of our Scholastic collection. A real winner!

Sadie Thompson

Sadie Thompson
Customer Review: A landmark of silent cinema history
This DVD is a special treat for serious enthusiasts of classic films because despite its missing end scenes, Kino Video has resurrected this silent film with a reconstructed ending and many bonus features which give ample in-depth and background information about Sadie Thompson. Based on a real-life person, the story of a prostitute clashing with a religious reformer or minister first appeared as a novella by W. Somerset Maugham, then a Broadway stage play before screen legend Gloria Swanson decided to tackle the challenge of playing the controversial character. Her second venture as a producer for United Artists, Swanson chose a highly talented crew to complement her own outstanding performance, which resulted in an energy-charged, entertaining and well-balanced drama with touches of playfulness and subtle humour. Lionel Barrymore is frighteningly convincing in the role of the overly zealous and pragmatic reformer, who was originally a religious minister in the story and play, but due to censorship rules in the 1920s, any reference to a minister or church had to be removed. Gloria Swanson also excels in this role which allowed her more acting expression and depth than her `fashion clothes horse' roles she had become so famous for in the early 1920s. Her mannerisms and even her walk convey the essence of the Sadie Thompson character as she fools around with some US Marines, then challenged by the strict, conservative and judgmental reformer and his wife. When she finally gives in to pressure to atone for her sins, the transformation to a plain and sullen woman is also quite striking. Just as the electrifying tension between Sadie and the reformer culminates, the moving film ends and is replaced by stills which reveal the final twist of the story. This is somewhat of a disappointment, but considering that "Sadie Thompson" was believed lost for several decades, most viewers will surely be happy just to see this important film in its present state: almost complete with only a few segments of poor picture quality due to deterioration. An exceptionally good orchestral score more than makes up for the few blurry scenes, and enhances the various moods and intensity of the drama throughout. The bonus features give background information about the film, the original story, as well as comparisons between the written story, play and films, including a sound re-make only a few years later with Joan Crawford entitled "Rain". With hardly any action and most scenes shot inside the hotel in the tropical downpour, "Sadie Thompson" is more of an intellectual film which challenges two extremes of thought and life-style, and when or whether a compromise can be found. The classic story and its author aside, this film is also of interest due to the cast and crew, with Raoul Walsh both acting and directing, and art direction by the renowned William Cameron Menzies whose efforts to re-create the South Pacific inn also add to the overall high quality of this production.
Customer Review: Superb Somerset, Swanson and Silent
This 1928 silent film is perhaps one of the alltime great films and as much as I love Joan Crawford in "Rain," this version impresses with its fine attention to story. Based on the Somerset Maugham tale, it tells of a fun-loving and seductive young prostitute, the titular character (Gloria Swanson), temporarily holed up on the island of Pago Pago with a forbidding reformer and a gaggle of marines when her boat to Apia is infected by small pox. It becomes clear what a maniacal, almost psychotic and self-delusional figure religious reformer Alfred Davidson (Lionel Barrymore) is and his exact attentions upon Sadie's conversion when his eyes stray to her heaving bosom. Barrymore is wonderful in conveying this man's frightening fervor and human frailty. This is in great contrast to the wooden quality of Walter Huston in "Rain" (although Huston was also very effective). Gloria Swanson is sexy, vivacious and full of fun, her antics actually making me laugh out loud, her camaraderie with the marines impish, funny and light. The attraction between "Handsome" Tim O'Hara (Raoul Walsh) and Swanson is palpable, particularly when the camera lingers in close-up on Swanson's ravishing beauty. She has eyes that rival Elizabeth Taylor's. Her face also expresses an entire range in the character from unself-conscious coarseness to innocence, wistfulness and desire for a better life with a respectable man -- in fact, Barrymore and Swanson create complex characterizations without a single word spoken. The music also adds immensely to the mounting tension of various scenes and fortunately, some of the film footage that was lost has been painstakingly restored, although the loss remains a great one. One can only imagine how dynamic these high points in the plot would have been with the real footage and it is grievous to know that so many silent films and other early films, some perhaps as important as "Sadie Thompson," have indeed been lost forever. In any case, a superb version of the classic Maugham story. Highly recommended for any film buff and a great chance to see Swanson at the peak of her powers and beauty, her talent and magic in front of the camera undeniable. Yes, they certainly had faces then!

Lucy's Adventure: The Search for Aslan (Narnia)

Lucy's Adventure: The Search for Aslan (Narnia)

C.S. Lewis's The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe has been a fantasy classic for more than fifty years and is now a major motion picture!

At first Lucy Pevensie is sad when she is sent with her sister and brothers to the countryside to escape the dangers of wartime London. But when they arrive, something wonderful happens: A game of hide-and-seek turns into the adventure of a lifetime! In the magical land of Narnia, Lucy and her brothers and sister meet Aslan, the Great Lion, who calls them to fulfill their destiny -- free Narnia from the evil White Witch!

Customer Review: Excellent book
I saw this on Amazon and wondered what it was like, so I picked it up. This is an excellent book for the kids. Adapted from the movie, the book takes the reader through The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe from Lucy's point of view and interjects what she may have been thinking along the way. It also details what may have happened when she went back the second time (with Edmund following). It also has black and white photos from the movie. I would pick this up along with the others in the series.

Wedding March (1928) (Silent)

Wedding March (1928) (Silent)
Customer Review: I dream of it!
I feel me terribly unhappy because this film is inaccessible to me: living in Russia, I cannot even buy the VHS (to Russia do not deliver), - why is this masterpiece now not published on DVD?
Customer Review: A Rich Man, A Camel, and the Eye of a Needle
As the film exists today, Stroheim echoes the Apostle Paul's famous words: "The love of money is the cause of all kinds of evil." Indeed, symbols of Christ and Christianity abound in this movie, the message of which seems to emphasize the aristocratic emptiness we still celebrate. The late Fay Wray, very lovely here, deserves so much to be remembered for more than KING KONG. Her performance is excellent as the used and betrayed lover, and, quite frankly, her performance is the best thing about the film, except, perhaps, for some of the lighting, despite the director's arrogance. Source material for this release varies, from near excellent to poor, but it is wonderful we still have this masterpiece.

The Charles Dickens Collection (Oliver Twist / Martin Chuzzlewit / Bleak House / Hard Times / Great Expectations / Our Mutual Friend)
Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 09/27/2005 Rating: Nr
Customer Review: serious problems
There is a reason that so many after market retailers here on amazon have these at a steep discount. In my case, three of the six DVDs refused to play on my high end, very expensive Onkio DVD player. Of those three, one refused to play on my Dell computer. The remaining reminded me of a joke told to me by a Stanford Ph.D. mathematician-philosopher. The tools of a mathematician are pencil, paper, and waste paper basket. The tools of a philosopher are paper and pencil. These stories were originally serials in magazines. Dickens had to submit so many words on a scheduled basis and did not have a firm ideal of where the story was going. This is in sharp contrast to Kipling who would take his finished work and make several passes of cutting out whole sentences to compact the story down to a fast paced adventure. Dickens did not do this when the stories were published in book form. These programs are very long winded. They could have been easily edited down to 1/2 of their length without losing any of their content.
Customer Review: Dickens, Dickens and More Dickens
Anyone who likes the novels of Charles Dickens would, I believe, like this series. Anyone familiar with the BBC productions of the Dickens' novels would like this series. Anyone curious about 19th century English society would like this series. And lastly, anyone who just likes to see a good story well acted would like this series.

The Best of Broadway Musicals - Classic Performances from The Ed Sullivan Show

The Best of Broadway Musicals - Classic Performances from The Ed Sullivan Show
Customer Review: A great snapshot of legendary broadway shows
This DVD is a great look back at some of the best shows ever. This is the only glimpse we have at what some of the original productions may have looked like. The quality is pretty good, although this was mastered from the 1990's video release, not a remastering of the original video and kinescope materials. If you are a fan of Broadway, I highly recommend this DVD. Two notes to buyers: First, the song "There's No Business Like Show Business" is not a full performance. Second, at the end of the DVD there is a trailer for a second volume of this series. This was never released on DVD and as near as I can tell, was never released on video either.
Customer Review: A Great Trip Down Memory Lane
If you have a real love for the history of musical theatre, this DVD is a must for your collection. There are several highlights that are simply joyous. The Larry Kert, Carol Lawrence "Tonight" duet is heart rendering and a treat for the ears! This alone is worth the price of this DVD. But, add to that the young and beautiful Julie Andrews in her prime as she delivers the quintessential version of "Lovely". And, you will understand why so many raved about Pearl Bailey in "Hello Dolly". When she sings "Before the Parade Passes By", she does not merely sing the music, she also sings the lyrics and this is something Carol Channing never really did. The great Gwen Verdon singing and dancing as only she could from "Sweet Charity", the magnificent voice of Richard Kiley delivering the ultimate version of "The Impossible Dream" and vibrant Pat Suzuki belting out "I Enjoy Being A Girl" make this a special treat. Add to that Celeste Holm's "I Can't Say No" (nobody does it better) and the sight of the legendary Barbara Cook as part of the group (John Raitt, Florence Henderson, Celeste Holm) singing a rousing version of "Oklahoma" and you have one great DVD. The only song that does not come across well is Carol Channing singing a rather forced version of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend". But why quibble. Buy this infectious delight!

Peter Pan (Special Edition)

Peter Pan (Special Edition)
Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films: it instills an element of childlike wonder. The 1953 version of James M. Barrie's story is colorfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book. Barrie's wondrous focus on child's play is the key to its longevity: kids who don't grow up, shadows that run away from their owners, pirates, a fairy, and the magic ability to fly. In short, you can't help wishing the adventure would happen to you. Fueled by a few memorable songs (the stunner being "You Can Fly") and the strong impression of the pixie fairy Tinkerbell and the goofy Captain Hook, Disney's version of this story neither supplants nor lessens the Broadway version with Mary Martin that was produced for television the same decade. Unlike some classics, Peter Pan never ages along the way. --Doug Thomas
Customer Review: A Christmas gift.
Bought this as a Christmas gift and the little girl was excited over it. You can't go wrong with Peter Pan.
Customer Review: racist garbage
The portrayal of native Americans is flat-out racist. It's demeaning and indicative of the basest stereotypes. Imagine if they had gone to a ghetto instead, and the n-word was constantly used and all of the black people were portrayed as loveable idiots eating chicken and watermelon. That's basically what you have here, in this film, with the native Americans. Being a "classic" doesn't make the racism OK, nor does being a children's movie. You can wrap your racism up in all the candy-coating you want, it's still racism. My son chose this from the library yesterday. It's going right back.

Songxpress: Classic Acoustic, Vol. 1
Customer Review: A bit simplified
I had used the SongXpress series for Surf Guitar to learn a few songs and have been impressed with the series. I bought this tape to learn some folk guitar and was a bit disappointed with three of the songs in that just the chords were taught. Not much more, really that you could get from a book. For "4 and 20," by Cosby Stills and Nash, the fingerpicking was taught, which makes the tape worthwhile. I am ordering some other SongXpress material, nevertheless, since what is good is very good, despite the fluff.
Customer Review: Good tool for practicing guitar
These videos are great learning tools, almost like having an instructor in the room with you, except that you can rewind the tape and play only the parts that you need to repeat.

Customer Review: pretty good actually
my friend who has a perfect body recommended this video to me. It is easy, quick and does make a difference. I tell friends about it all the time. You can't go wrong.
Customer Review: This tape annoys me
Okay, so the exercises ARE good. The abs exercises on most of the FIRM tapes that have them ARE good. But I still think it was a mistake ordering this tape for two reasons: 1. It's just a collection of routines from other, earlier FIRM tapes, so to me it pretty much seems like a rip-off. Also, get ready for some OLD ones there - from the time when instructors looked like Kate Moss and even guys were wearing pink and orange aerobics clothes. If you ever felt like you didn't quite enjoy looking at such things anymore - well, then you'll find this tape a visual disaster. 2. Who is this Tracy guy, for heaven's sake?! All he does is introducing the sets of exercises - half naked and looking as unnatural as a diamond ring on a homeless guy's pinky. He's ridiculous, but he's actually too annoying for me to be able to simply laugh at him. Altogether, this tape was a disappointment and the two stars are strictly for the exercises.

After the initial shock of heating up your iPod(it really does get hot), I have to say that it didnt do any damage to it,but it offers some great protection.I have been using this for about three months now, and it has proven to be very tough, with no scratches at all.I'm amazed by this, as I put it in my pocket, packed messenger bag, and knock it around hard, and not one scratch. It is a good product at a great price, and it comes with 7 of them as well!I agree some practice is required to get a great wrinkle free fit,but I found that if you dont heat the front of the iPod,it works much better(just heat the back and sides). All in all a nice product once you get over the fact that a hairdryer wont damage your iPod, but scratches will, and quick! Highly recommended!

Ren & Stimpy - Classics 2

Ren & Stimpy - Classics 2
Customer Review: you stewpid eediet!
Hi! The Ren and Stimpy Classics 2 is so funny! It comes with a total of 3 enjoyable episodes. The first is called "Sven Hoek." It's about when Ren's cousin visits from somewhere on the other side of the world. And he finds kinship in Ren's home-with Stimpy. Next is the classic "Action Log ad." THen the last episode is called "Stimpy's Fan Club." It is when Ren and Stimpy get their mail one day, all of it for Stimpy. So Stimpy lets Ren help the staff of his fan club, and that's when trouble happens. I recommend this tape to anyone over the age of 12 because of the humor.
Customer Review: Hey Ren!
By 1994, Ren & Stimpy were the most popular cartoon characters on Nickelodeon, and the humor was still just as wild as you could ever expect from the cat with no tail, and the egotistical dog, Ren. Nevertheless, the cartoon still remain as the most zany toons ever made for older kids of course. But sometimes, there are only two shows rather than one on a collection. This one is the only one that has had that effect. The sequel to Ren & Stimpy's classics, Classics II, contains two double-length animated cartoons. The first one Swen Hoek, is one where Ren & Stimpy encounter a visit from Ren's cousin Swen. Ironically, he might be a relative of Ren, but he acts more like Stimpy, which outrages REn to the fullest level of anger. It just comes to be so bad, that Ren destroys a toy that the two enjoy, and sends all three of them down below. All because ren excreted on the electric fence, one of the zany animated, fictional products that were introduced on Ren & Stimpy. The second cartoon, Stimpy's Fan Club, deals with what animated characters are like when they recieve mail. Ren unfortunately, doesn't get any mail, because all the mail always goes to the stupid players, Stimpy of course. Stimpy invites Ren to become his president of his fan club, where he answers all of the fan mail, and answers some everyday encounters people always face. Unfortunately, the crazyness Ren has with being too nice gets back on him. At the of the cartoon, he finally gets a piece of fan mail fron his only fan, Stimpy. It is just so awful that Nickelodeon stopped broadcasting Ren & Stimpy awhile ago. Yet, they really broke the level for zany adult humor that we see in cartoons like The Simpsons, King Of The Hill, and The Oblongs. Anyway, if you've never seen Ren & Stimpy before, I suggest you get this video, you eediot!!

Orson Welles: Volume 1: The Road to Xanadu

Orson Welles: Volume 1: The Road to Xanadu
In this first installment of his masterful biography, Simon Callow captures the chameleonic genius of Orson Welles as only an actor/director deeply rooted in the entertainment industry could. Here is WellesÂ's prodigious childhood; his youth in New York, with its fraught partnership with John Houseman and the groundbreaking triumph of his all-black Macbeth; the pioneering radio work that culminated in the notorious 1938 broadcast of War of the Worlds; and finally, his work in Hollywood, including an authoritative account of the making of Citizen Kane. Rich in detail and insight, this is far and away the definitive look at Orson Welles—a figure even more extraordinary than the myths that have surrounded him.
Customer Review: Orson Welles: From Kenosha boy genius to Hollywood Outcast in volume I of the Callow multivolume bioography
Orson Welles was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1915. His wild father loved dames, booze and travel while making an upper class living in industry. His mother was a socialite well known in church and community. His older brother had mental problems and spent time in an institution. And so the scene is set for the Kenosha kid the inimitable huckstere, magician, director, actor, storyteller and good time Charlie we call Citizen Welles! Orson studied at the prestigious private Todd School for boys near Chicago. He did well at Todd, acting in student productions; directing plays and becoming the big man on campus. Welles did not go to college but instead became an actor on the Dublin Gate Theatre stage for a period of ten months. He was on his rocket ride to the top of the slippery slope of showbiz. Welles became an actor in the prestigious Katherine Cornell company touring the nation. He wed his first wife Virginia, sired a daughter but kept busy whoring around town. Wells had a gargantuan appetite for food, drink, women, the stage and fame. He was tempermental and liked to receive all of the credit for collaborative efforts. Welles was often vain and childish. He could be a tyrant or pussycat depending on his mood. Welles was the voice on countless radio programs earning him a comfortable living. He teamed with John Houseman in the Harlem "Macbeth" which was a sensation of the New York branch of the Federal Theatre Administration during the Great Depression. Wells hosted and created the Mercury Theatre on the air becoming notorious for the 1938 production of "The War of the Worlds. He was lured to Hollywood directing what has been considered the greatest American film of all time: "Citizen Kane" in 1941. The movie was controversial being based on the life of William Randolph Hearst. This book focuses on the career of Welles on stage and screen. The book does report the private life of Welles but does so in a tasteful manner free of innuendo or gossip. Welles comes across as massively egotistical, selfish, sybaritic and self-destructive. He was, despite his faults, a genius of show business. Simon Callow is a famous British actor and writer who has served his subject well in this massive volume one which takes us through Citizen Kane and ends in 1941,
Customer Review: George Orson Welles
This is a fantastic, very detailed and rather objective biography of the boy genius of the theatre world. 600 pages about Welles for only the first 26 years of his life is a lot, but definitly worth all the details. The author basically tells Orson's early life around the plays he directed and that were his life at the time. It is amazing to me how a 14 year old kid was able to succesfully direct Shakespeare plays and even write a book on how to understand Shakerpeare's work. The book gives great details on every single play he directed, radio shows he produced, the making of citizen Kane and on a broader scale gives a great insight on what broadway was like during the 30s. The account of the war of the world radio broadcast that terrorised the northern US on halloween night 1938 will make you relive the moment as if you were there. I highly recommend this biography to any fan of Orson Welles or anyone who is interested in the history of broadway or the theatre in general.

House of Horrors

House of Horrors
Customer Review: Universal's Famous 'The Creeper', In An Eerie Horror Entry
This little Universal Studios effort gets its fair share of controversy over the supposed ethics of using actor Rondo Hatton who was a famous sufferer of the disfiguring illness Acromegaly, as the 'monster', of this horror effort. Right or wrong he does make an effective horror actor in this eerie little effort from 1946 and is greatly aided by the equally sinister performance by Martin Kosleck as deranged sculptor Marcel De Lange. The pair actually make a good team and Martin Kosleck's colourful acting as the owner of the 'House of Horrors', helps smooth over many of the deficiences in Rondo Hatton's limited acting ability. All in all it turns into a quite effective second string horror effort that builds quickly towards its climax and actually contains more elements of a thriller than of an out and out horror story. Based on a Sherlock Holmes story 'The Pearl of Death', the Creeper character was resurrected as a vehicle for Rondo Hatton. As the action begins we find eccentric sculptor Marcel De Lange preparing a new avant garde sculpture for an interested client. Unfortunately Marcel has a bad reputation in New York art circles and when the client arrives at the studio he is unfortunately accompanied by acid tongued art critic F. Holmes Harmon (Alan Napier), a man feared and hated by all artists. When Harmon tears Marcel's work to pieces in front of the client Marcel swears somehow to get revenge on him. Faced with starvation from the loss of the sale Marcel contemplates suicide and as he is about to throw himself in the river he sees a figure climbing out of the water. Rescuing him he finds that the man is none other than the supposedly deceased 'creeper', who is responsible for a number of grisly murders in the city where the victims spines are snapped. Marcel nurses him back to health and gets his guest to pose for a new sculpture based on his unusual features which he feels will undoubtedly become his 'greatest work'. Marcel however is rapidly loosing his grip on reality and sensing that the creeper will do anything he says he sees a way of getting his revenge on those people who do not appreciate his work. Soon after with just a word from Marcel the creeper seeks out and murders the hated Harmon. The critic was just in the process of writing another nasty review of the work of artist Steven Morrow (Robert Lowery)at the time of his death and soon the police list Steve as one of the chief suspects. His girlfriend art reporter Joan Medford (Virginia Grey), sets out however to prove his innocence. Before long innocent women on the street are meeting grisly fates and the police are alerted to the fact that the spine snapping deaths indicate that the creeper is actually still alive. Having dealt with Marcel before Joan decides that somehow he is involved and visits him in his studio. She comes by the sketch he has made of the creeper for his sculpture and seeing that it matches the photos in the paper she is confirmed in her suspicions about where the murderer is. Taking the sketch for proof, unfortunately Joan now becomes the creepers target when Marcel discovers it missing. The creeper goes to Steve's apartment hoping to find Joan but by mistake murders one of Steve's models Stella (Joan Shawlee), who the he thought was Joan. Going back to Marcel's apartment to return the sketch Joan however finds herself trapped by the madman. Threatening Marcel with her evidence he states that he would shift the blame solely onto the creeper and in the resulting fight the creeper snaps his spine killing him. Joan now has to fight for her life as the creeper comes after her and its only with the timely arrival of Steve and the police that the terrifying creeper is shot down. 'House of Horrors', was the second film (after an earlier effort titled 'The Brute Man') to star Universal's new horror creation 'the creeper'. However Rondo Hatton's tragic death from complications due to his disfiguring illness squashed plans for a movie series. Nevertheless this is a solid little effort enlived no end by the playing in particular of Martin Kosleck and vivacious actress Virginia Grey. Indeed Kosleck's deranged sculptor is in some ways the successor to Universal's earlier mad scientists like Baron Frankenstein. Being the 'B' effort it undoubtedly is the action is fast and not much effort is taken in deep character development. Rondo Hatton apart from playing this memorable character really has very little to work with and most of his time is spent on creating a frightening presence leading up to the murders. Virginia Grey, one of Hollywood's most beautiful starlets in countless 1930's vehicles really makes the most of her screen time and delivers an interesting performance. Why real stardom alluded this talented woman is one of Hollywood's many mysteries. The look and feel of 'House of Horrors', is typical of Universal's products in the 1930's and 40's. Despite the small budget they have managed to put together a polished production that looks good even by today's standards. Marcel's weird sculptures in his equally strange studio dont exactly add up to being a 'house of horrors', however the very off beat art work present really adds that strange dimension to his unhinged character and gives the film its appropiately eerie feel. Being a big fan of these Universal horror efforts I can say that 'House of Horrors', is not their best effort but it does make a highly entertaining hour and a half. Regardless of whether it was right or wrong to manipulate Rondo Hatton like this they were responsible for bringing to life one of the 1940's decade most memeorable villians. Still remembered to this day for his work in this effort Rondo Hatton has in a way earned horror movie immortality because of it which I guess is not such a bad thing. Check out the eerie goings in the sinister 'House of Horrors', soon and see one of Universal Studios more memorable creations of the 1940's in the frightening 'Creeper".
Customer Review: Equal Opportunity
Just because a movie is bad doesn't mean people won't like it. House of Horrors is a B-schlock classic. Contrived, marginal acting, sub-intelligent plot, low-brow entertainment, fantastic! And I find the contention that poor Rondo Hattan was "exploited" to be very tiresome. The guy has gone down into cinematic history! He has a solid fan base nearly 60 years after his death. Tom Cruise, Richard Gere and others adored purely on their looks can only hope to be so fondly remembered. I give House of Horrors a B for Bad. And that's damn good.

Batman - The Animated Series, Volume One (DC Comics Classic Collection)

Batman - The Animated Series, Volume One (DC Comics Classic Collection)
Warner Brothers' Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995) remains a striking, stylized program that helped to revitalize the familiar comic book hero. Drawing on such diverse influences as Frank Miller's graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, the Fleischers' Superman cartoons of the early '40s, and contemporary Japanese animation, the filmmakers stress interesting designs and cinematography. The Caped Crusader prowls a sinister, Art Deco-styled world of tall verticals, sharp angles, silhouettes, searchlights, and grid-like shadows cast by window frames. Its visual pizzazz eclipses Filmation's pallid kidvid, The Batman/Superman Hour (CBS, 1968), which ran off and on in various incarnations through 1981. Many of the same artists worked on the Batman animated features (e.g., Mask of the Phantasm (1993), Batman Beyond--The Movie (1999)), which display similar strengths and weaknesses.

Ironically, Batman: The Animated Series looks better in stills than it does in motion. The artists fail to stylize the movements of the characters to match the dramatic settings, as Genndy Tartakovsky and his crew did in Samurai Jack. Batman uses sophisticated computers to combat the well-known villains--the Joker, the Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Catwoman--as well as some less celebrated baddies: Manbat, Clayface, The Mad Hatter. The bad guys cram a lot of plotting and scheming into each 22-minute episode, but the violence is kept to a broadcast standards minimum.

The Dark Knight's First Knight easily ranks as the most interesting of the extras. Producers Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski recount the genesis of the series, and show their mini-pilot, which is more violent and more fully animated. If the complete episodes had matched the pilot, the series would have been much more exciting. (Unrated, suitable for ages 8 and older: violence, mild grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

The Little Colonel

The Little Colonel
Ex-confederate Colonel Lloyd never forgave his daughter for marrying a Yankee. Living alone on his Kentucky estate, he was feared by everyone because of his temper, that is until he met a little 5 year old girl with a temper to match his. Shirley Temple endeared herself to us when she played this part in the movie with the same name.
Customer Review: In praise of the series...,
I have found nearly every book in the "Little Colonel" series, some being first editions. I prefer the older editions, despite the numerous "racial slurs," because they are the product that the author intended to present. I have heard from various sources that the later editions have been revised, removing the colloquiallisms and unifying Lloyd's speech patterns and mannerisms with those of the other characters. I call this a shame. Obviously, no harm was meant by the author when she portrayed the African-American servants as she did, and reading Lloyd say, "...honah," rather than "honor" paints a lot more colorful picture of her character. In rating this series, I must declare it a "must read" for both boys and girls. The morals and lessons are invaluable, and would be a refreshing balm for the wounds today's youth are suffering from, even at the youngest age. I do believe if I had read the tale of "The Three Weavers," as told in "The Little Colonel At Boarding School," MY life would have been touched, sparing me much grief in later years. So, parents, grandparents, caring adults, find these literary jewels and READ them with a child. Their lives and yours will be the richer for it.
Customer Review: sweet stories teaching worthwhile values.
My mother was born in 1896, She read all the Little Colonel books and read them to me. I read them to my children and grandchildren and now have a greatgranddaughter who will get my old old and dearly loved copies. These books teach a love of classics as well as good moral values, plus, providing interesting stories.

The Raj Quartet: The Jewel in the Crown/the Day of the Scorpion/the Towers of Silence/a Division of the Spoils

The Raj Quartet: The Jewel in the Crown/the Day of the Scorpion/the Towers of Silence/a Division of the Spoils
Customer Review: The Arrows of Philoctetes
This book (or series of books) is so sprawling and intricate, like India itself, one might say, that it is impossible to "pin down", as it were, in a review like this. The thing to do, I think, is to cover the most salient aspects of the work separately. Otherwise, one will become lost, as many of the characters herein do. So, salient aspect numbers: 1.) History - This is the novelistic equivalent of Gibbon concerning the British Empire. It might even be called "The Decline and Fall of The British Empire." As a reviewer for the Sunday Times puts it, "A history student years from now should be able to say to his professor, `Yes, but what was it REALLY like in India in the last days of the Raj?' and be told, `Read these four books and you'll not only know, you'll understand...' " The "understand" part is especially significant in that these books will have you totally spellbound by Scott's deft character portrayal and psychological insight. It is no exaggeration to say that one feels one has lived in India from 1939-1947 after having emerged from the nearly two-thousand pages that comprise this work. But the deft character portrayal leads me to a more troublesome, salient point: 2.) Ronald Merrick-A host of characters populate this work, portrayed with deep sympathy herein. And yet, one can't help but feel, upon closing the pages, that the work might also be called, "Ronald Merrick: An in-depth Portrait of a Psychotic in India". It is a tribute to Paul Scott that we do not discover the depths of the....evil (Sorry, I can't think of another word that fully encompasses the character.) of Merrick until the tag end of the work. Yes, Hari Kumar is the other major character who, to a certain extent, offsets Merrick. But he fades into the background after his interrogation by Nigel Rowan with Lady Manners looking on in the second book, The Day of the Scorpion. Merrick, so to speak, stays on until the very bitter end. Not only does he stay on, but he lingers in the mind. What is he? What does he represent? The British Raj itself, as some would have it? Partly, I would say, but there is something about Scott's obsession with this fellow that refuses to be pigeonholed. It's all very eerie. By the end of the book, you won't be able to hear the word "Merrick" without a troubling frisson running through you. - He is not mad like, say, Susan Layton, who rather resembles a character from one of the Bronte novels. - His nature and the nature of his evil are complex. They defy reduction. So, I shan't venture on a futile quest to do so but rather come to salient point: 3.) The brooding fatalism that overhangs everything here. Of course, one knows before one picks the book up that the Brits in India are doomed. But, well, I'll just let Daphne Manners' quote from the first book, The Jewel in the Crown, give the reader notice of the feeling that permeates this work: "We were sitting on the verandah. Oh, everything was there - the wicker chairs, the table with the tea tray on it, the scent of the flowers, the scent of India, the air of certainty, of perpetuity; but, as well, the odd sense of none of it happening at all because it had begun wrong and continued wrong, and so was already ended, and was wrong even in its ending, because its ending, for me, was unreal and remote, and yet total in its envelopment, as if it had already turned itself into a beginning. Such constant hope we suffer from!" Salient points covered...except that the reader might do worse than to do as Perron does at the end and look up Philoctetes, not a futile quest by any means.
Customer Review: A masterpiece.
My yardstick for excellent writing about a foreign culture is probably Paul Scott's "The Raj Quartet", which was the basis for the BBC TV series "The Jewel in the Crown". I think these four books are a real tour de force - he writes in several different voices throughout, but remains - I think - completely sensitive to the political and social complexities and subtleties of the situation in India towards the end of the British occupation. Very nuanced, extraordinarily sensitive writing. It's not just the writing: the stories that unfold in this masterpiece will draw you in, grip you, and break your heart.

Customer Review: The Land Before Time {Anniversary Edition}
Excellent, maybe the best cartoon ever produced. Comical characters, funny lines. I'm 50 years old and still like to watch it while having my morning coffee.
Customer Review: Come on man
This movie is stupurbolis! Yes I make up my own word for it. I'm glad it doesn't have any songs in it. If it did, I probably would have thrown the VHS out long ago. As for the different tones in the picture, did they restore it before they transfered it? And Nymph 2 was a perfectly good movie and excellent sequel. The songs were entertaining. My schpeil's done.

Classic Bluegrass Banjo Solos DVD

Classic Bluegrass Banjo Solos DVD
Tony Trischka teaches eleven classic pieces that are prime examples of banjo playing at its best. You'll learn them, note-for-note, just as they were played by some of the greatest players in the history of the instrument. By learning these tunes you'll not only expand your repertoire, but in the process will also become more flexible in your ability to mix up various rolls, play in several keys without a capo and move more freely around the neck.

Tony, who is widely known as one of the world's top contemporary banjo players as well as a historian of banjo lore, performs each tune with the help of John McGann on guitar. He then slows it down, going over the tricky spots and explaining all the right and left hand techniques you'll need to play it.

Here are the solos you'll learn: John Henry (Earl Scruggs), Sitting on Top of the World (Alan Shelton), Gold Rush (Vic Jordan), Bye Bye Blues (Alan Shelton), Dixie Breakdown (Don Reno), Old Home Place (J. D. Crowe), Salt Creek (Bill Keith), Casey Jones (Bobby Thompson), Clinch Mountain Backstep (Ralph Stanley), Little Maggie (Bill Emerson), Doug's Tune (Doug Dillard).
Customer Review: Great way to pick up new tunes
Tony Trischka is a great banjo player and excellent teacher. He breaks down each song and makes each part understandable. If he had videos out when I started playing 30 years ago I would be a much better banjo player today. This is probably intermediate level but worth the hard work. I suggest any of his books. Just be sure to memorize the song and break free of the tabs after you learn the song. It is not cool to carry a music stand for field picking! :-)
Customer Review: Good for intermediates
My two cents. highly recommended for intermediate players only. if you are a beginner it will be too hard. What this video does is he takes you through the way the famous players /scruggs, reno, shelton, etc./ played their solos. if you are a beginner, better to get the murphy henry videos. but if you are intermediate or advanced intermediate you will like it. also you can steal some of the neat licks that the great players used, and apply them to other songs you play. there are some very cool endings , especially in old home place and sitting on top of the world. the kind of licks that are so good they themselves are worth the price of the video!even if you learned these songs as a beginner, if you go back and see how they REALLY were played you will find they sound better with these more advanced licks. only about 4 of them are really scruggsy. some of the later songs in the video are not scruggsy at all and use even single string style. but for intermediates i recommend it and look for some of those neat endings in the video and apply them to other songs you play.
