Customer Review: I wish they still made movies like this!
This is a great little film that shows how clever and funny some of the old 39's and 40's movies can be. With a cast of actors that frequented movies by classy directors like Capra and Sturges, the movie has all the pieces to make a successful romp. This is definitely slapstick, and if you get squeamish with scenes of total destruction, there will be a time or two when you will want to close your eyes! However, I am not a fan of that type of destruction, and I thought the movie was terrific. Jean Arthur is quite adorable and endearing in most of what she does, and I would have to say she lives up to that in "Easy Living" as well. Her character comes across as sincere and believable, and this allows her "antics" to succeed. Ray Milland and Edward Arnold are also very good. They don't necessarily have momentous occasions, but they provide the solid acting that you would expect from them. Of course, William Demarest has his almost obligatory appearance in the movie, and he always adds a little spice. (He was in nearly every single big movie that Sturges was involved in.) Anyway, if you like corny screwball/slapstick comedies that are funny and clever, try "Easy Living." This is great for when you want something that is relaxing and not too long. It's really hard to not smile/laugh during this film!

The Thief of Bagdad - Criterion Collection

The Thief of Bagdad - Criterion Collection
Often hailed as the greatest fantasy film ever made, The Thief of Bagdad (1940) was producer Alexander Korda's crowning achievement. Deservedly winning Academy Awards for art direction, color cinematography, and special effects, this Arabian Nights adventure appeals to all ages with its fantastical tale of Abu (Sabu), the little thief who befriends the prince of Bagdad (John Justin) and foils the nefarious plans of the evil grand vizier (Conrad Veidt), who seizes control of Bagdad and covets the princess of Basra (Joan Duprez). From its gorgeous, epic-scale sets to flying horses, magic carpets, and, best of all, Rex Ingram's towering jinni of the bottle, this Thief has all the magic of the tales that inspired it, and vibrant Technicolor brings it all to life in dazzling style. Six esteemed directors worked on this infamously troubled production, but the final result exceeded all expectations, becoming an instant classic that endures to this day. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: The 1924 Version with Douglas Fairbanks is the Original
This is a remake of the 1924 silent version starring Douglas Fairbanks. The 1924 version is more spectacular.
Customer Review: A CLASSIC TO OWN-Criterion Review
Criterion has done a wonderful job to this edition. The colours are so sparkling, the sound (Mono!) is clear, the picture breathtaking. The extras are two audio commenatries very informative especially Scorsese who gives detailed stories. On the second disc are some audio experts with Michael Powell and Miklos Rosza which get boring after a while. A nice contribution is a Propaganda movie for the British War. The Movie itself needs no further explanation because mostly everyone has seen it.A must!!!!

Customer Review: Good Digita Reproductionl
Nice digital reproduction of this all time favorite. The colors are satisfactory. I am not sure if there were ending credits in the original, but it seems that they were omitted on this DVD.
Customer Review: An all time favorite
I enjoyed watching 'Sound of Music' when I was a little girl. Now my children loves it, too. Great for a family movie night.

It almost seems superfluous to add to the other reviews, but I'm compelled to tell people that if you haven't seen "Out of the Past", then you must. Fantastic characters, snappy dialogue and a hopping plot; see it. There isn't a clunker in this set; they all pop.
Customer Review: Amazing collection of noir
First of all this the best price on this collection. You can not call your self a noir fan unless you have watched these classics. Out of past consistently rates as one of the greatest movies ever made. All five movies in this set can be found on best 100 film noirs.

Scene It? Movie Travel DVD Game

Scene It? Movie Travel Edition
Customer Review: Great trivia - hard to hold onto
This is a great trivia game, but the board collapses and bends too easily - making it hard to hold in a car. We just use the questions, and forget the board - then it's an interesting and fun game.
Customer Review: Scene It Travel Edition - Movie Trivia For the Road!
Scene It? Movie Travel DVD Game When it comes to the best bang for your buck, this Scene It Travel edition is hard to beat. The questions are good and the game is designed pretty well. There's also an included game board with magnetic player pieces to play with others. Ok, so I probably am not using this game like other users. I get the feeling this was designed with RVers and road trippers in mind who travel as a family or group. As for me, I usually travel alone and load this guy up on my laptop. So I kind of ignore the whole game board setup and just use this for a fresh collection of questions. This game is pretty comparable in terms of questions to the "Obsessed with Hollywood" book. Obssessed With... Hollywood: Test Your Knowledge of the Silver Screen (Obsessed With) (Obsessed With...) However, that book is harder to find on Amazon and isn't the sturdiest thing in the world. On the upside, for solo travelers like me you don't need a DVD player, which can be a bit much for single player play. There's also a travel version of the TV trivia game from Scene It Scene It? TV Travel DVD Game. This is a great trivia game for portable solo or multi-player use. At the price of around $13, it's a great value. Definitely would get this one. Enjoy!!!

The Postman (Bantam Classics)

The Postman (Bantam Classics)
This is the story of a lie that became the most powerful kind of truth. A timeless novel as urgently compelling as War Day or Alas, Babylon, David Brin's The Postman is the dramatically moving saga of a man who rekindled the spirit of America through the power of a dream, from a modern master of science fiction.

He was a survivor--a wanderer who traded tales for food and shelter in the dark and savage aftermath of a devastating war. Fate touches him one chill winter's day when he borrows the jacket of a long-dead postal worker to protect himself from the cold. The old, worn uniform still has power as a symbol of hope, and with it he begins to weave his greatest tale, of a nation on the road to recovery.
Customer Review: A great adventure.
I had not seen the movie when I read this book, so the story was fresh for me. I was looking for a smaller story, I think, of the post apocalypse, but this was an exciting surprise. It is a great adventure and survival story. Good writing, good characters, but it may seem a bit sexist at times, so it should be taken into consideration the times in which this book was written. There was a breaking point for me though, at the ending. I'm not sure why the author made such a departure from the basic plot and tried to go sci-fi.
Customer Review: First Class Delivery
I love this book, and was one of the books I remember reading until 4 in the morning just because I couldn't put it down. Then came the film, which I actually picketed at our local cinema, I couldn't in all good faith allow anyone who had read the book to see the film. David Brin kindly shared some of his thoughts with me on the matter via the power of e-mail and whilst he was generous in crediting Mr Costner with trying to stick to the spirit of the book, this is definitely a case of "if it aint broke, don't fix it". Ok, this would make a better mini-series than a film, but there you go. Anyway, where was I? Ok, itinerant story teller adopts identity of long dead postman, builds new hopes, defeats survivalist army, sets off to California to reform the Beach Boys (it is unclear whether Tom Petty assists him in this endeavour) etc etc. I have begged and cajoled Mr Brin for a Postman 2 (Postman 2 - Not known at this address") in which a furious Oregon populace get all annoyed for having wasted all their time doing stuff in the name of The Restored United States only to find it doesn't exist, well, you would be a trifle cheesed off wouldn't you? Anyway, book good film bad, and by the look of the economic and energy situation as I write this (October 2008), you will all soon be able to recreate Gordon Krantzs' adventures for yourselves! So in summary, visit the apocalypse before it visits you. I bid you farewell

Lon Chaney: Phantom of the Opera

Lon Chaney: Phantom of the Opera
Customer Review: KINO is the best way to go for silent films, but this movie stands well on its own...
I find the one problem with this dvd is the color tinting - I understand that it may have been done simply to provide some definition when some of the scenes had too much black in them. It's to be expected in a silent film, but I got spoiled on KINO's new updates on silent films that are always top notch and of excellent quality. Still, that is not to say that this film is lacking. If you like silent films, then you must have this film in your collection. Lon Chaney gives a performance never to be forgotten, and this film hits all the right notes for what you would expect in a silent film. The suspense builds, the score is beautiful, and what I love about the film is it sticks, for the most part, to the original storyline of the book - with the inclusion of Faust and all. The score even goes so far as to include the arias from Faust that were mentioned in the book, which only adds to the acting of this movie. Unfortunately, the female lead (who I have seen in many other movies, where she has done incredibly well) seems to flounder a bit in this role. But if you were to see her in "The Man Who Laughs", you would not believe it was the same person. In short, despite minor flaws, this is a must-see for silent movie buffs and general film buffs alike.
Customer Review: Who needs dialogue?
The 1924 silent classic stands tall among the bevy of imitators. The combination of music, shadows and color tinting of a black & white film work to render any dialogue an impediment to this film. Lon Chaney's hideous face and his body language are more than enough to keep any viewer on the edge of their seat. Simply stated, the film is worth watching again and again so as to better understand all the theatrics apart from dialogue that make a film a classic. Hitchcock realized this as many of his films went minutes without a spoken word. Take a hint producer's of today. If we want to be read to, we'll listen to audio books. If we want to see actors act, we will watch The Phantom of the Opera, 1924

Customer Review: The text format of this book is terrible!
Dumas rates five stars; the story rates five stars, but the formatting makes reading it on the Kindle a nightmare! The lines of text are fixed-length, and they are longer than the width of the Kindle page, even at the smallest character-set size. Thus each line displays as one full line, followed by a short overflow (or word-wrap) line. Ugh! I asked for, and received, my money back, and I deleted the item from my Kindle. I am VERY disappointed, as I wanted to read it in the original French, but I couldn't cope with the jerkiness that the ridiculous text formatting imposes on the reading process. (OK, I see others didn't seem to notice . . . so, I guess I'm picky. But there you are: my opinion, for what it's worth.)
Customer Review: This is the "texte integral"
It seems that two of the three other people who have written reviews rated the wrong edition. As the other reviewer pointed out, this is the "texte integral." This is not an edition to be read by somebody who is beginning to learn French. I consider myself very fluent in French and still have difficulties with some parts of the text. For a more advanced reader such as myself, this book is an excellent read. Dumas is an excellent author and I have enjoyed every story of his that I have ever read. The plot is well developed and engages the reader through to the end of the novel.

Customer Review: Review of Gullivers Travels
This is a highly intriguing story about a man who goes on many adventures to multiple different islands, each inhabited by a certian form of creature. The first island he arrives at has everything, except all of it is in miniture, including the people! on this island he is hailed as a powerful giant. This island is know as Lilliput. he escapes from Lilliput on a boat that washed up on the shore. The second island that he arrives on is populated by gigantic everything, trees, animals, people, and so forth. on this island he is captured and originnaly displayed for money and entertainment until he is bought by the queen. he escapes from this island in a miniture house that was made for him out of wood. this island was known as Brobdingnag. Once again, he journey to a distant island. this one is populated by people who are obsessed with music, math, and astromany. He leaves this island by way of a ship which takes him to Japan. His final voyage is to the land of the Houyhnhnms. This land is populated only by fully intelligent horses and creatures called Yahoos, which have many human aspects but have sharp claws and are somewhat violent. he takes his leave from this country with the help of the Houyhnhms, who aid him in making a canoe with a sail and paddle. That is a somewhat rough review of the main ideas of his journeys to multiple island on which he finds many strange things and learns multiple languages. I liked this book becauce of its sense of adventere and because of its many new, interesting ideas.
Customer Review: Excellent book, not so good edition.
This is an excellent book, no doubt about it. However, the edition is not so good. My copy, which is several years old, has yellowed considerably, and the print is small, so it does not make a very comfortable read.

Long Dark Hall (B&W)

Long Dark Hall (B&W)
Customer Review: British Noir from Half a Century Past
You wonder how the two stars could face each other playing the parts they did, only a few years after Rex Harrison was caught with his pants down and Carole Landis lay tragically dead, a suicide? Lilli Palmer stuck by her man and she and "Sexy Rexy" were banished from Hollywood--at the time, people thought, forever. Here they play a married man with a gorgeous wife who just can't keep from straying. He's having a passionate affair with a young showgirl, who just happens to wind up murdered, and because his knife is left at the scene of the crime, a seedy theatrical boarding house run by Brenda de Banzie, the coppers come for him, shocking his wife. Lilli's parents come to survey the emotional wreackage left in the wake of the revelation of Rex's affair. Funny how she's German of course, but she has conventional English parents (no explanation given for her wobbly accent). The real killer is disclosed early on, and he becomes obsessed with Lilli Palmer and manages to insert himself into her life little by little. This is the chilling, creepy part of the movie, quite suspenseful, but most of the picture is a kind of dull trial drama set in a frame story of an American anti-capital punishment journalist who begs his UK confrere for one last story to use as the final setpiece in a book he's writing about unfairly condemned men. "I've got just the case for you, old chap, the Rex Harrison story," and the movie begins. In a sense THE LONG DARK HALL is a replay of Hitchcock's THE PARADINE CASE, and they probably skimped by using the same Old Bailey set and the same motheaten barrister wigs and robes. Rex seems to be acting out the tortures of the damned, while Lilli sometimes wears a look on her face that says, serves him right, the cheating schweinhund. The "long dark hall" of the title is strangely underused, considering it's pretty atmospheric and positively cries out for a second scene in which the killer tries to strangle Lilli Palmer there. Alas no! Nonetheless it's a hardcore noir affair and well worth watching for its damned-if-you-do, nobody-cares attitude towards individual fate and collective responsibility.
Customer Review: A curiosity
Although this film has some curious similarities with the real life of 2 of its major actors ( Harrison and Palmer ) it's not really good enough to merit serious attention otherwise. The plot is very B movie and melodramatic and the acting by modern standards pretty wooden. The true relationship between Harrison and his lover is fatally never fully described, though this is more the fault of prevailing social censorship than anything, with the consequence that Palmer's dogged devotion to her husband appears merely conventional. A pity because there was the chance of a really good movie here. A case for a remake?

Little Women (1933)

Little Women (1933)
Little women is a coming of age drama tracing the lives of four sisters: meg jo beth and amy. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 07/20/2004 Starring: Katherine Hepburn Paul Lukas Run time: 117 minutes Rating: Nr Director: George Cukor
Customer Review: Faithful adaptation of Little Women
This 1933 Hollywood adaptation of Little Women is lavishly produced and a true classic. The story itself is a family drama, centering on the lives of the March sisters - Meg [Frances Dee], Jo [Katharine Hepburn], Beth [Jean Parker], and Amy [Joan Bennett] who live with their mother, Marmie in a New England town during the time of the Civil War, whilst their father is away fighting. Of all the movie adaptations, this 1933 version is the most faithful to the novel and though not my personal favorite [I love the 1949 version with June Allyson the best], I still love it for Katharine Hepburn's performance as the feisty, independent-minded Jo March who harbors dreams of becoming a published author. The actresses who play the sisters are all quite good, but somehow pale in comparison to the latter versions [I liked Elizabeth Taylor's performance as Amy in the 1949 version, and Claire Danes' performance as Beth in the 1994 adaptation. The actor who portrayed Laurie was the weakest of all the adaptations. Apart from the lack of good looks [seeming almost girlish in some scenes], he also lacks stature and credibility in his portrayal of Laurie. Other than that, the production details are convincing and well-done, and I also like this version for staying as true as it could to the novel by Louisa May Alcott. This version is worth owning for Little Women fans and fans of classic Hollywood dramas.
Customer Review: Some Comparisons
The most interesting thing about the three film versions of "Little Women" is comparing them to each other or comparing each of them to Alcott's book. What makes them so difficult to choose between is that the casting of the four title characters is the critical element, and each film featured at least one actress whose performance was clearly superior to her character's portrayal in the other two films. This all star cast would include Jean Parker (Beth) in the 1933 version, Janet Leigh (Meg) in the 1949 version, and Winona Ryder (Jo) in the 1994 version. The 1994 version also had the best Amy, if only because they wisely split the role into a younger Amy (Kirsten Dunst) and an older Amy (Samantha Mathis). Since Jo is pretty clearly the most important of the four sisters (to the story), the 1994 version gets my nod as the best of the three films. The 1933 version pulls in as a close second as Joan Bennett and Katherine Hepburn are the second best Amy and Jo; and Francis Dee's Meg is as good as Trini Alvarado's. Neither Margaret O'Brien nor Claire Danes come even close to Parker's portrayal of Beth. The biggest casting problem all the productions had was in the age of the actresses. With the exception of Beth, all three characters must span a five year period. The casting process typically addressed this by selecting older actresses and getting them to play (with varying degrees of success) much (June Allyson was 32 years old) younger versions of themselves during the first half of the film. At least the 1994 versions managed to get the birth order right. The 1933 version had some problems in this area, as Hepburn was two years older than Dee and Bennett five years older than Parker. While this still causes many Alcott fans to cringe, it is nothing compared to the 1949 version where Allyson was ten years older than Leigh and Elizabeth Taylor was five years older than O'Brien. Taylor should have played Jo, which would have saved viewers from Allyson's embarrassing portrayal and from Taylor's attempt to pass as a blonde. Few actresses (even in black and white) were less suited to a light hair color. While Taylor's portrayal of Amy is painful, she would have been well suited to the Jo role. Critics frequently point out that both Hepburn and Allyson were much like Jo in real life, so there is a certain irony that Ryder's portrayal of the character (one so dissimilar to herself) was far superior. But Ryder and Jo have a similar level of intensity so maybe it was not as much a stretch as it seems. Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

CASABLANCA COMPANION: The Movie Classic and Its Place in History

CASABLANCA COMPANION: The Movie Classic and Its Place in History
Customer Review: Casablanca Companion Review--Great History
For those who are interested in how closely the film Casablanca actually follows historical events, Osborne's book is a must. Tremendous research was involved in finding out just how Casablanca fit into the reality of WWII. Surprisingly, it is quite historically accurate as Osborne is able to show. When the film is in error he does point it out and his explanation of the signature on the Letters of Transit finally clears up that issue. Well written with helpful maps, photos, and illustrations, Osborne's book has been an invaluable resource for me in writing by own book Casablanca Film Trivia: Here's Looking at You, Kid which will be published in the fall of 2008

Reefer Madness (B&W)

Reefer Madness (B&W)
A propaganda film from 1936 that has become a cult hit because of its dated outlook on marijuana use, Reefer Madness is the height of camp entertainment. Framed as a "documentary," the film is narrated by a high school principal imparting his wisdom and experiences with the demon weed. The bulk of the film focuses on almost slapstick scenes of high school kids smoking pot and quickly going insane, playing "evil" jazz music, being committed, and going on a murder spree. Meant to be an important and affecting cautionary tale, this dated black-and-white film's true value is in its many entertaining moments of unintended hilarity. --Robert Lane
Customer Review: SEXY!
I have always been baffled by the anti-pot movies of the thirties. I feel like, perhaps, the message is percieved in backwards. The women in these things are always so sexy. And completely wild and out of control. Rawrrr. The message in Reefer Madness is this; Take the classiest dames you can muster up, and give 'em a puff of that wacky weed. Soon they will be laughing and peeling clothes off left and right beyond all bounds. The more the merrier. Right? Anyways... I love a good cult flick as much as the next, but in all truth, this movie is fun once, and then you'll probably never have any interest again. I wish there were more thirties girls wriggling around in smoke ecstacy, and possibly a few more crazed murderers... plus theres way too many feds involved, being all dead pan and whatnot. I'm just on board for the sexy aspect, you know... and maybe the laughs. However, this is still a good "deal" when you consider the Mystery Science Theater commentary features (bonus feature, Reefer Madness gets MST3K'd, yo!) and also the colorized option, which is so overly colorized, you may think that somebody laced your stuff when you're watching it. For the extras, I will give this DVD five tokes, and a chest cough. Check it out.
Customer Review: So full of un-truths, it's funny!!!
This movie is so full of un-truths, it's funny!!! In a serious tone, this movie comes on scene to some normal young American youths, that are being led astray by a slightly older group of young adults who know better. This movie is racy for the time period that it was made in. It is set to be a serious likely-hood of what will happen to teenagers who fall into the wrong crowd and start experimenting with drugs. In this case, it's reefer or marijuana that is the drug, and in this movie, it's the side effects that are so unbelievable. Teenagers who are in the know now about the side effects of reefer, will laugh through this serious, and boring way two teenagers find trouble, when they start hanging around a new group of hip smokers. Becoming more sexually active, and irresponsible in their judgement, the teens begin their downward spiral in society. Our main hero is asked to drive while intoxicated by the reefer stick, when he has an accident and every lie afterwards gets him deeper into trouble and deeper into the rugged rage of reefer. If you are able to watch your way to the end of this movie, you might be able to understand why another movie 'Reefer Madness' was made as a musical tribute to this one. The musical, mocks the original with great energy, music, and color. All of which are missing from the first movie. Yet, only after I managed to watch the original, was I able to fully fall in cult classic love with the musical.

The Lost World

The Lost World
Newly restored with fifty percent more footage than any version in seventy years, here is the model for "King Kong," "Jurassic Park" and "Godzilla." A world wide sensation when it opened on February 15, 1925, "The Lost World" is a story of living dinosaurs from the Jurassic age written by the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and starring a cast of stegosaurus, allosaurus, brontosaurus, triceratops, and pterodactyl under the technical direction of Willis H. O'Brien (King Kong, Mighty Joe Young) and a cast of actors under the direction of Harry O. Hoyt.
Customer Review: A Revolutionary Film for Its Time
"The Lost World" was the "Jurassic Park" of the silent film age. While the plot of adventureres finding a South American plateau inhabited by dinosaurs may seem far fetched today, just sit back and let suspended disbelief sink in while enjoying a well made picture. There are plenty of dinosaurs and dinosaur confrontations in the atmospheric jungle/volcanic setting. The stop motion animation and even inflatible stomachs (to simulate breathing) gave the creatures a realism unmatched at the time. True, it lacks the modern special effects of "Jurassic park" or "Walking with Dinosaurs" but viewers should remember just how painstaking the processes that brought these beast "to life" were in the 1920s. The film contains a number of memorable scenes from fierce dinosaur battles to a volcanic eruption to a brontosaurs stomping around London. Overall, an enjoyable and revolutionary silent film.
Customer Review: Slingshot version is not the one to buy
I bought the Slingshot DVD, and it's bad. The images are clean and clear enogh for a movie made in 1925 (this is what saves this from a 1-star grade), but virtually none of the features advertised is present on the disc. Also, this is not a 90-minute cut, but a 66-minute cut. There's action here which barely makes any sense at all; having read the Arthur Conan Doyle novel, I can at least piece things together, but a viewer shouldn't have to do that. To top it off, some engineer on a mission added sound effects -- why? More than anything else, they're just a distraction. I have yet to see this movie at full-length. My thought is that at full length, it'll probably make more sense, at least I hope so. As such, I'm still in the market for a good version of this film.

It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown (Peanuts Classic)

It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown (Peanuts Classic)
The thirteenth installment in the evergreen Charlie Brown animated series, this is a delightful romp through the rites of spring. The running gag that holds this string of episodic misadventures together is Peppermint Patty's futile attempts at explaining how to make Easter eggs to Marcy. Highlights of this rather surreal Peanuts outing include Snoopy's dancing with little bunny rabbits inside a kaleidoscope, Sally heading to the mall to purchase a pair of platform shoes (this video was made in 1974), and Woodstock's lavishly equipped bachelor-pad birdhouse. As with the best of the Peanuts cartoons, this will entertain children and adults alike, and is one of the last of the series to feature a music score by Vince Guaraldi. --Kristian St. Clair

This is as cute as it can be! My grandkids love it year after year.
Customer Review: Marcie you made egg soup!!!!! Aughhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
I like this special its very funny. I love how Marcie can't cook good and she asks "uh Sir how do we color the eggs after we fry them?" Later when Snoopy gives them some eggs Marcie asks what do we do with them and Peppermint Patty says "We eat them we put a little salt on them and we eat them." Marcie puts salt on the egg and then crunches down on the shell and says "Tastes terrible Sir." So funny and there's also the Arbor day special that's funny too but I don't care for the voice they used for Lucy. Great DVD. I'll have to get it. I had the old one but it got old so I thew it away.

The End of the Affair: (movie tie-in edition)

The End of the Affair: (movie tie-in edition)
The novelist Maurice Bendrix's love affair with his friend's wife, Sarah, had begun in London during the Blitz. One day, inexplicably and without warning, Sarah had broken off the relationship.

It seemed impossible that there could be a rival for her heart. Yet two years later, driven by obsessive jealousy and grief, Bendrix sends Pakris, a private detective, to follow Sarah and find out the truth.

"One of the most true and moving novels of my time, in anybody's language."-- William Faulkner

"Singularly moving and beautiful."-- Evelyn Waugh
Customer Review: Moving, Beautiful, Fluid, True
Absolutely one of the greatest, most important, most relevant books I have ever read...The only reason Greene did not receive the Nobel Prize for this effort that I can think of is that those damned snickering, closed-minded, borderline brain dead fascist God-haters who don't believe God exists (the oxymoron itself shows you how brain dead they really are) probably fought and muttered tooth and nail to suppress genius in defense of Absolute Truth. Anyway, I'm not bitter, maybe just a little sad, disappointed and altruistically fed up with demonized morons incapable of feeling...But yeah, you should definitely read this. It's very deep, yet altogether fluid, concise, moving, beautiful, readable, just a good book. They're making less of them nowadays. Books will pale in comparison when you read this....
Customer Review: Enjoying a woman with Love -- the only way
Written in four parts, this book commences with the "affair" proceeds in part two to the "end", enlightens you in part three by reading "her" diary, and ends with Greek-tragedy-like conclusion which assuredly will put any reader to tears. Greene manipulates the heart's strings in this novel as well as any other by his hand. Centering upon the view of protagonist Maurice Bendrix - called almost always as Bendrix - we learn of a peculiar love triangle between he and pal Henry Miles and Henry's wife Sarah. Nothing fantastically complicated occurs. People outgrow one another during a classic WW II and post war marriage between two British thirty-somethings. In a time and land when divorce was less acceptable, the alterative was an "affair." So the title. Miscommunication abounds, and largely because of a communication with God. The threesome evolves from the Miles and Bendrix to Bendrix, Sarah and God. And, then the issue becomes: whose God? The uncommitted version, the Protestant, or the forbidding Catholic. The end delves with a funeral rite of being either simple or Catholic - with family and friends discussing or even feuding about which would have been the choice of the deceased who exercised no formal religion during life. Like "Brideshead Revisitied", this theme emanates to a great verbal brawl and religion actually aggravates sores as opposed to providing cure. In the end, Bendrix is so disillusioned that he proclaims, "Never again would I be able to enjoy a woman without love?" Or is he merely growing up? But, Bendrix also resolutely admits, "O God, You've done enough. You've robbed me of enough, I'm too tired and old to learn to love, leave me alone for ever." A man of uncertain belief in the almighty, the once agnostic has to admit to God's existence in order to be upset and angry at Him for what was wrought upon Bendrix. The time of the novel is important in understanding these concepts. This may be a product of its time. The novel was written when Mao and Stalin aggressively challenged religion and most religious beliefs. Literally billions of people were subjected to governmentally induced programs of disbelief, while disbelieving Bendrix freely elected to believe under the most arduous of situations. And, perhaps all are sad. Written in British style, the novel is not as complicated as predecessor authors - Waugh, Forster,. . . many of whom are mentioned in this novel. Greene uses a clean and crisp style -- which more purely depicts scenes than American impressionists Hemingway and his progeny -- and his book moves quickly and effortlessly with only an occasional accent of flowery prose. Greene's sophisitcation stealthily sneaks past the reader -- proof of the genius of the writer.

Sadie Thompson

Sadie Thompson
Customer Review: A landmark of silent cinema history
This DVD is a special treat for serious enthusiasts of classic films because despite its missing end scenes, Kino Video has resurrected this silent film with a reconstructed ending and many bonus features which give ample in-depth and background information about Sadie Thompson. Based on a real-life person, the story of a prostitute clashing with a religious reformer or minister first appeared as a novella by W. Somerset Maugham, then a Broadway stage play before screen legend Gloria Swanson decided to tackle the challenge of playing the controversial character. Her second venture as a producer for United Artists, Swanson chose a highly talented crew to complement her own outstanding performance, which resulted in an energy-charged, entertaining and well-balanced drama with touches of playfulness and subtle humour. Lionel Barrymore is frighteningly convincing in the role of the overly zealous and pragmatic reformer, who was originally a religious minister in the story and play, but due to censorship rules in the 1920s, any reference to a minister or church had to be removed. Gloria Swanson also excels in this role which allowed her more acting expression and depth than her `fashion clothes horse' roles she had become so famous for in the early 1920s. Her mannerisms and even her walk convey the essence of the Sadie Thompson character as she fools around with some US Marines, then challenged by the strict, conservative and judgmental reformer and his wife. When she finally gives in to pressure to atone for her sins, the transformation to a plain and sullen woman is also quite striking. Just as the electrifying tension between Sadie and the reformer culminates, the moving film ends and is replaced by stills which reveal the final twist of the story. This is somewhat of a disappointment, but considering that "Sadie Thompson" was believed lost for several decades, most viewers will surely be happy just to see this important film in its present state: almost complete with only a few segments of poor picture quality due to deterioration. An exceptionally good orchestral score more than makes up for the few blurry scenes, and enhances the various moods and intensity of the drama throughout. The bonus features give background information about the film, the original story, as well as comparisons between the written story, play and films, including a sound re-make only a few years later with Joan Crawford entitled "Rain". With hardly any action and most scenes shot inside the hotel in the tropical downpour, "Sadie Thompson" is more of an intellectual film which challenges two extremes of thought and life-style, and when or whether a compromise can be found. The classic story and its author aside, this film is also of interest due to the cast and crew, with Raoul Walsh both acting and directing, and art direction by the renowned William Cameron Menzies whose efforts to re-create the South Pacific inn also add to the overall high quality of this production.
Customer Review: Superb Somerset, Swanson and Silent
This 1928 silent film is perhaps one of the alltime great films and as much as I love Joan Crawford in "Rain," this version impresses with its fine attention to story. Based on the Somerset Maugham tale, it tells of a fun-loving and seductive young prostitute, the titular character (Gloria Swanson), temporarily holed up on the island of Pago Pago with a forbidding reformer and a gaggle of marines when her boat to Apia is infected by small pox. It becomes clear what a maniacal, almost psychotic and self-delusional figure religious reformer Alfred Davidson (Lionel Barrymore) is and his exact attentions upon Sadie's conversion when his eyes stray to her heaving bosom. Barrymore is wonderful in conveying this man's frightening fervor and human frailty. This is in great contrast to the wooden quality of Walter Huston in "Rain" (although Huston was also very effective). Gloria Swanson is sexy, vivacious and full of fun, her antics actually making me laugh out loud, her camaraderie with the marines impish, funny and light. The attraction between "Handsome" Tim O'Hara (Raoul Walsh) and Swanson is palpable, particularly when the camera lingers in close-up on Swanson's ravishing beauty. She has eyes that rival Elizabeth Taylor's. Her face also expresses an entire range in the character from unself-conscious coarseness to innocence, wistfulness and desire for a better life with a respectable man -- in fact, Barrymore and Swanson create complex characterizations without a single word spoken. The music also adds immensely to the mounting tension of various scenes and fortunately, some of the film footage that was lost has been painstakingly restored, although the loss remains a great one. One can only imagine how dynamic these high points in the plot would have been with the real footage and it is grievous to know that so many silent films and other early films, some perhaps as important as "Sadie Thompson," have indeed been lost forever. In any case, a superb version of the classic Maugham story. Highly recommended for any film buff and a great chance to see Swanson at the peak of her powers and beauty, her talent and magic in front of the camera undeniable. Yes, they certainly had faces then!

Customer Review: Great Version of Monopoly for the Disney Pixar Movie Lovers
This version of Monopoly is fabulous! We had been playing Monopoly Junior Toy Story edition for years and decided to upgrade. We made the right choice with this one. The kids, ages 11, 9, and 8 all stay interested with this version. I get tired of playing before they do. We haven't finished a whole game yet because it takes forever (what Monopoly doesn't) but the kids don't mind. They have just as much fun starting over each time. My second grader has also learned to add and subtract large numbers and also how to count money from playing this game. This game is not only fun but educational.
Customer Review: Great fun, but lack of female character's is a disappointment
I am a collector of Monopoly games and have always been impressed by the diverse selection of tokens available for each game - it's so fun to see if your favorite character made it in. With this Pixar Edition, this did not fail, it was just as exciting to see all my favorite Pixar characters, but the disappointment lay in the characters I did not see. Each Pixar movie has at least one female, so I was rather perplexed by the fact that one could not be included in the game. The only near female token is the Sully one that comes with Boo on his shoulder, other than that no Jesse from Toy Story or any other's you may be looking for. When I debuted this game at my monthly game night last month everyone had a great time, but about 80% of my guests also pointed this out. As much as I love this game, and as fun as it is to play, I find this an unfortunate oversite, thus the deduction of one star is required.

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol
This 1938 MGM version of the Dickens classic is not the most rewarding of the various adaptations (that honor goes to Biran Desmond Hurst's 1951 film, starring Alistair Sim), but it has a strong if narrow performance by Reginald Owen as the miser Ebenezer Scrooge. Directed by Edward L. Marin, the movie is stiffer and less imaginative than it ought to be, but there are some compensations in the supporting cast, including Leo G. Carroll, and the film debut of little June Lockhart. --Tom Keogh
Customer Review: A Classic Christmas Tale
It's a great film adaptation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Shot in black & white, it adds to the drama of watching it just once a year. In my opinion, better than a lot of the others out there but this could just be because I grew up watching this version so I may be partial because this was always part of our Christmas tradition.
Customer Review: Best Christmas Spirit
My husband always wanted to watch this Christmas Story, but we could never find it. I finally found it on Amazon and it really is the best one. It is in black and white, but I thought it was really wonderful inspite of that! We loved it and it helped to make our Christmas just a little but better!

Eagle

Eagle
Customer Review: The soldier who would rather get a new horse than be a general
This film links a seemingly heartless czarina; a revenge-driven cossack who, though engaging in numerous scriptural debates on the subject with his beloved, finally gets back at his enemy in a fun, pleasurable, and totally inadvertent way; a high-born thief who's such an oblivious father that I wanted to slap him; and a bear. During the movie, we laughed so many times... One thing I notice about silent movies (and it's very refreshing for a slightly deaf person) is that you can talk all you want, and you won't miss anything. Me and my mom were on the edge of our seats towards the end, which rarely happens with us; I had hide my eyes when it got too grim to contemplate. Shame they don't make movies like this anymore.
Customer Review: Valentino as a Russian masked avenger!
Silent screen legend Rudolph Valentino reached enormous heights of popularity in the 1920s before his untimely death not long after starring in "The Eagle", which is a terrible shame because judging by his performance in this film in particular, it is evident that Valentino was more than just a pretty face and had a lot of talent to offer. First cast in some dubious character roles (such as in "The Married Virgin") Valentino was soon established in the typical Hollywood heroic and irresistably charming leading man role for whom all women swooned. "The Eagle" is a good example of this role in which Valentino demonstrates not only his usual magnetism and appeal, but also humour and an overall fine feeling for details and subtle comedy. Very much in the style of Zorro and Robin Hood made popular a few years earlier by Douglas Fairbanks Sr, "The Eagle" is Russia's version of this masked avenger fighting for the poor against injustices, and all in glorious Hollywood style. Although the sets and costumes give the film a distinct Russian flavour, the story is definitely classic Hollywood entertainment all the way with tongue-in-cheek comedy, indispensable romance, standard action and adventure, and the triumph over bad in an unexpected happy ending. The story is quite interesting and entertaining from the very onset which shows how Valentino as a Cossack guard first gets into trouble by resisting the Czarina's romantic advances, resulting in her condemnation of him as a deserter, wanted dead or alive. At home, his dying father has been cheated by a wealthy landlord out of his entire estate, and as the peasants rally around him crying for justice, Valentino dons the Zorro-like mask and becomes known as `The Black Eagle' vowing to take revenge on the greedy landlord, but wouldn't you know it: Valentino's love interest turns out to be the daughter of the man he is after! This enjoyable and satisfying story is enhanced by good acting, especially by Valentino, and the picture quality is very good throughout. The musical accompaniment is a theatre organ and is well-suited to the scenes, although I can imagine that an orchestral score playing Russian-style music would further enhance this film. In any case, "The Eagle" is thoroughly entertaining in true Hollywood style and should satisfy even those who are not great Valentino fans.

Presidential Bloopers

Presidential Bloopers
Customer Review: Good but it fell a little short.
The program is funny but I wasn't exactly cracking up through the whole thing. Some of the footage is priceless like Bush Sr. going down in that bowling alley, Dukakis falling off the platform and everything from Dan Quayle. I was really hoping for more of the video of Clinton and Yeltsin laughing uncontrollably. It appeared in the opening credits for about 2 seconds. It's advertised on the back of the case for cryin out loud! Some of the footage isn't funny at all. It's been awhile since I've seen any bloopers video so I completely forgot about the stupid and annoying sound effects they add in. The technical aspects of the program and DVD are the real let-downs of this. The volume level of the audio isn't constant and I found myself turning the volume up and down throughout the whole thing. The video source they used is a dark print, making me almost squint through some of it. Disappointing it's less than 40 min. They could have CERTAINLY included an extra feature with bloopers from Dubya (this video was originally made in '99). They could do a whole program on him alone. Or just a review of his presidency, the biggest presidential blooper of all time.
Customer Review: Extremely Funny
I didn't expect to like it as much as I do. Like every other reviewer says, from Ike to Clinton, both verbal and physical. Presidential contenders also make the cut, so we get Dole, Gore, Quayle, McCain, and Jesse Jackson. It'd be a shame not to get Quayle, wouldn't it? First ladies too, so we can Nancy fall down again and again, and Bess Truman steals the show. Why only three stars? Because it's only 45 minutes long.

Ten Commandments (1923) (Silent) (B&W)

Ten Commandments (1923) (Silent) (B&W)
Customer Review: Ehhh
I watched this one thinking it was going to be like the 1950's version and was surprised when it wasn't. The first part of the film is actually about Moses and the Ten Commandments. The second part of the film is a modern story dealing with the Ten Commandments. The first part of the film was the part that I really liked. It was pretty well done considering it was a silent film, and almost had to be over the top to get across its point to you. It was the second part that just dragged the whole movie down for me. I felt that part was just too long and spent time on scenes that didn't really need it. It lingered and lingered when it could have moved on to something else. It was well done, but just too long. And I say this as a person who appreciates the art of silent film. I know some of them were long, but this didn't keep my interest. If you're looking for the 1950's classic done in a silent version just watch the first part and skip the second. Or just come back to it at a later time.
Customer Review: AN OK FILM, BUT GETS BOGGED DOWN IN THE MIDDLE
Cecil B. DeMille's 1923 silent film of "The Ten Commandments" is a decent work from one of Hollywood's most influential and controversial directors. Unlike DeMille's more powerful 1956 remake with Charlton Heston, the story of Moses and the Hebrews being delivered out of Egypt takes up only about a fourth of the film. But that part is truly spectacular, featuring beautiful cinematography, enormous sets, and visual effects that were cutting-edge for the silent film era. However, most of this film is set in the 1920s, and concerns how a family is torn apart, as one son sets himself on living by the commandments set down by God, and the other decides to reject the words of his mother, and live his life free of those commandments. Sadly, this part of the film is mostly uninteresting, as the story gets too involved in "preaching" to the audience. However, the last few minutes are great, as the story of Jesus curing a person of leprosy is told with great reverence. This film comes as a part of theThe Ten Commandments (50th Anniversary Collection) DVD. Overall, this is an OK film that fans of DeMille will find interesting, if a little too dry. Grade: B-

Justice League Unlimited - Season One (DC Comics Classic Collection)
Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 10/24/2006
Customer Review: Hours of Great Entertainment!
I've only watched about half the episodes but so far I've been very impressed with most of the stories. I particularly enjoy the episodes that feature lesser knowns like Green Arrow and Dr. Fate.
Customer Review: freaking amazing
i have to admit after watching the first two seasons of justice league unlimited i'm disapointed the show didn't get alot more seasons. this a great show for anyone who enjoys comics, cartoons, or just plain great stories. the "cadmus arc" really hits where hero's are most interesting. at what point does being a "pro-active" hero cross the line into vigilantism and why don't heroes kill people. it's a great watch and this being seasons one and two despite the label it's a great value. you should buy this, now!
