How the West Was Won (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]

How the West Was Won (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]
Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 09/09/2008
Customer Review: How the West Was Won
Some may not think the movie itself is a masterpiece, but the filming and sound process was far ahead of it's time. I saw this movie when it was first released in 1962 at the Ambassador theater in St. Louis, Missouri. Interestingly enough the same place the documentary mentions at it's beginning. It was an experience I will never forget. This movie has been restored so well you will rarely know this was filmed with three cameras. But the vistas of the West will truly amaze you for a 46 year old movie. The movie has a very well known cast for that period and the story is compelling. A family heads West down a river in Ohio and ends up in California and then Arizona. How they live and die over the course of a lifetime is inspiring. Fans of movie history will especially get a kick out of this movie and the documentary on Cinerama. The process rivals IMAX even today. I highly recommend this piece of cinematic history. The Blu-ray version is magnificent quality and has plenty of replayability. If you enjoyed this catch "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" when it is released. CA Luster
Customer Review: Definitely the Ultimate Edition
Cinerama. As a young spud, how I remember what a big, big deal it was to take in a movie filmed in what was then state-of-the-art virtual technology. Yesterday's Cinerama was today's Imax; only back then Cinerama was available in such limited theaters and locations it was an extra special event just to experience it. And of the handful of Cinerama productions, the film most closely associated with the process was the 1962 epic HOW THE WEST WAS WON. And this ULTIMATE COLLECTOR'S EDITION is grand entertainment. . .but not necessarily because of the movie itself. The movie. Of course, the visuals were, and are, impressive, but the story of two families settling (and taming) the West over some 50 years in the mid-19th Century suffered from what so many other films of that period suffered from: gushy melodrama; cliches and stereotypes; grandiose overacting. Is it grand fun to watch, say, Henry Fonda and George Peppard share a scene? Sure. But you also are guaranteed to experience a handful of cliches and maybe one or two more "gosh darn it!"s than was really necessary. But again, merely a product of the times. I was surprised to learn this film did win an Academy Award for best original screenplay--especially when the viewer is treated to such lines as this (from Richard Widmark): "That ain't cryin'. That's just new life goin' on!" No, the real entertainment value of this edition resides in the special commentaries presented by filmmaker David Strohmaier; by director of Cinerama, Inc., John Sittig; by film historian Rudy Behlmer; by music historian Jon Burlingame; and by stuntman Loren James. Their commentary as the film is shown contains a wealth of facts, nostalgia, interesting tidbits, and priceless information. In particular, the commentary by James, who advises he performed around 80 percent of the stunts in the movie, is absolutely spellbinding. Also very enjoyable were the comments regarding the discomfort the actors and directors experienced when filming in the Cinerama format--when three cameras, or panels, were used to film each scene. Unless the two actors were in the same camera panel--and because the three-camera scene was so wide--the actors could not look directly at one another, but instead had to look off to the side, pretending they were seeing each other. Upon learning this, if you'll go back and look at the movie, you can discern this is indeed the case; the actors are looking over one another's shoulders. Fascinating stuff. And another treasure can be found in the third disc, a documentary entitled "Cinerama Adventure." This feature explores the development and history of how the Cinerama process came to be, the dynamic and colorful people who brought the format to the public, and the absolute cultural craze Cinerama brought to the entire world during the 1950s and early 1960s. During the presentation, the viewer is treated to remarkable clips from Cinerama travel features that mesmerized millions of theater goers. Alas, HOW THE WEST WAS WON was the last feature filmed in Cinerama (the studios realized the three-camera process was too cumbersome, problematic, and expensive), yet the format caused the entire motion picture industry to go to 70mm cameras, thereby ushering in cinematic widescreen still going strong today. This documentary is delightful and engaging. Finally, this ULTIMATE COLLECTOR'S EDITION includes nifty replicas of the press booklets actually handed out to the media when the film was released, along with black-and-white and color photos taken while the film was in production. And to top it all off, the CDs and the collectibles are all encased in leather facade pouches--yet another salute to the Old West. This edition of HOW THE WEST WAS WON is a must-have for all movie collectors and film buffs. --D. Mikels, Author, Walk-On

The Classic Monsters Collection (Dracula, The Wolf Man and Frankenstein)

The Classic Monsters Collection (Dracula, The Wolf Man and Frankenstein)
Customer Review: classic monsters collection
If one can stand clear with first class horror, one's options are simply too many. But if one looks and desires to find the key to the perfect set of horror flicks, one turns to the Classic Monster Collection.A desirably classy installment and reunion of perhaps the three best films of the series released by mca universal, the films held by the pack walk through the principal elements of a good movie;this can clearly be seen within all three, which is good because the satisfaction level can reach a peak and can guarantee not just objective quality, but also the spirit of a true displayable item for collectors.Beginning with the 1931 release of FRANKENSTEIN,in a restored version as indicated by the packaging, and sure to be noticed by the viewer the edition holds true black and white magic as the sound and view given thru the video are verifiably acceptable and adds up to the other two.The recapturing of the unforgettable scene in THE WOLFMAN,in which larry talbot experiences his first transformation is truely well put and with good sound adjacent to the effects sets realistic action to lon chaney's portrayal.Even though some effects in DRACULA may be classified as 'unreal',the status of the plot and it's developing story as the count reaches London are all easy to follow, and lean on a very respectable performance by bela lugosi that one must give credit to.The three films are simply the best mca universal's collection of over 30 releases, can provide. One can truely enjoy watching these classic hits that to me stand very recommendable.

Classic Jazz Drummers: Swing and Beyond

Classic Jazz Drummers: Swing and Beyond
Customer Review: A classic DVD for all jazz fans!
Whether you are a hard-core jazz fan or someone with a passing knowledge of this music form, this is a DVD you must watch. It is simply incredible and offers a nice 'recap' of the best jazz drummers in music history. I enjoyed all the drummers who appear on this DVD but my favorites are Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, and Philly Joe Jones. While some of the video transitions from one segment to another are not quite as smooth as we are accustomed to in this day of video technology, that is okay, because the musical performances are amazing. If I had a young child I wanted to expose to jazz, this would be the DVD I would show him/her.
Customer Review: Classic Jazz Drummers: Swing and Beyond DVD
I really enjoyed watching this DVD. It gives you an appreciation of the roots of jazz drummers and how their talents and innovative approaches to drumming set the stage for the great drummers of today. Although some of the film footage of the early jazz drummers is lacking by today's standards, the amazing skills of the early jazz drummers is still captured. I would recommend to anyone who is a drummer or is intrest in early roots of jazz or drumming.

The Fly Collection (The Fly [1958] / Return Of The Fly / The Curse Of The Fly)

The Fly Collection (The Fly [1958] / Return Of The Fly / The Curse Of The Fly)
Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 09/09/2008 Run time: 252 minutes Rating: Nr
Customer Review: Disc Breakdown Below. Curse One Very Underrated Film. The Fly One of the Best Trailers Ever.
This is a great set as is each film in it. The Fly is the all around best film of the set but it doesn't win that easily. Return of the fly changed the look by filming in black and white to give it a more artier feel which Price strongly disagreed with (I do as well)among other things during filming. Return is the funniest/campiest of the bunch. For example once I saw the guinea pig with little human hands the film had me. I also believe Return is the most suspenseful of the set. The Curse of the Fly is better than just ok as I've read from other reviewers and is the second best of the bunch in my opinion. Curse is also the most artsy picture, here there is no human fly, literally at least. THE FLY: 5/5 (Overall Best) I learned in the ten page book that comes with this set that The Fly first appeared in Playboy Magazine in 1957, winning the magazines best story of the year. A former soldier for Britain's Intelligence Army during World War II, George Lagelaan, wrote the Novella and actually underwent surgery while enlisted to change his identity, thought that was interesting considering the material. A more subdued Price not yet a permanent horror staple delivers as usual as Francois Delambre, whose brother Andre Delambre has developed a way to transport matter. Most know the story, eventually Andre tries to teleport himself and a common housefly gets trapped in one of the machines, the result is a cross between a Fly and a human. The fly mask isn't the over the top part you think it will be prior to seeing this, that comes later, but I felt the simple towel used to hide Andre's head head was subtle and effective. The Fly coming after WWII and creation of the atom bomb people had a fear of what radiation and it's effects could do. I felt The Fly's message was not to mess with nature. The ending wasn't happy but had a happy feel to it that I didn't feel fit, HOWEVER it made it all the more unsettling. RETURN OF THE FLY: 4.5/5 (Most Suspenseful) Filmed in black and white return as I said above is the most suspenseful and over the top, at times. Following his mother's funeral Phillippe Delambre, Andre's son wants to pursue his father's work all his family has suffered hasn't been in vein. He asks his uncle Francois (Price)for help (Price) which he eventually, reluctantly does. The plot is plausible, I remember thinking how is the exact same thing going to happen again, but the story is done well so that it makes sense. THE CURSE OF THE FLY: 5/5 (Most Artistic) Completely underrated. Curse begins with the smashing out of a window followed by a young attractive woman escaping from something only to stumble into a member of the Delambre clan and he helps her. They soon marry without knowing one another and he takes her back to his house/lab. The Delambres are still at work on their families invention and can actually teleport humans. There is no fly in this film literally but the young girl above is trapped in this house metaphorically like one. The film is all serious this time with no campy moments, just a feeling of dread. Great special effects and make up in this one which comes the closest to Cronenberg's version The Fly [Blu-ray] as far as an attempt to shock the viewer. I felt The Curse of The Fly had a feel of the classic Eyes Without a Face - Criterion Collection. THE FLY COLLECTION DISC OF HORRORS 1997 Vincent Price Biography (originally on A/E network). Commentary during the Biography with his daughter and historians. Fly Trap: Catching a classic Featurette Still Galleries Pressbooks, Posters and more. The more, also consists of Original Trailers. I felt The Fly trailer was one of the most effective I have seen next to the original trailer for The Shining [Blu-ray] where the blood fills the halls and thats it. Both are perfect examples of less is more. I felt The Curse of The Fly's trailer made it actually look worse then it was. Ten Page Booklet: 5/5 Great booklet and something you'd see from Criterion DVD. Interesting info on each film. This set and the booklet are all meat and no filler. Highest recommendation possible.
Customer Review: Put away that flyspray!
Mad scientists, pretty girls and killer insects abound in this great value box set which comprises the original "Fly" trilogy, plus a fourth disc loaded with bonus materials! THE FLY was based on a well-received story written by George Langelaan for Playboy Magazine, and was brought to the screen by Twentieth Century Fox in 1958. Lushly filmed in CinemaScope and Deluxe Colour, it provided audiences with a far more sleek and stylish horror movie than they would be used to seeing. It's topline stars Vincent Price and Herbert Marshall, two of the leading character actors of their generation, added another layer of prestige to the production. The story is told in flashback. The beautiful Helene Delambre (Patricia Owens) is charged with the gruesome murder of her husband Andre (David 'Al' Hedison) after his crushed body is discovered in the Delambre factory. Helene insists that Andre told her to kill him, following an experiment that went disastrously wrong, involving the cross-fire of atoms belonging to Andre and a common house-fly. Andre's brother Francois (Vincent Price) and Inspector Charas (Herbert Marshall) remain unconvinced--until a fly with Andre's head is seen trapped in a spiderweb... Co-starring Kathleen Freeman and little Charles Herbert ("Houseboat", "13 Ghosts"), THE FLY is still one of the most unsettling and intense horror movies from the 1950s. The disc also includes a bonus audio commentary track with the 'Fly' himself, David Hedison. In THE RETURN OF THE FLY, filmed the following year, we get a good sense of continuity with Vincent Price reprising his role of Francois Delambre. The story opens several years after the events of "The Fly". Following the death of Helene, Andre's now-grown son Philippe (Brett Halsey) is determined to continue his father's work, much to the horror of Francois. But Philippe's honest and honourable intentions are destroyed by his devious assistant (David Frankham) who turns Philippe into another hideous fly-creature. Can Francois save him from the same fate that Andre suffered? RETURN OF THE FLY also co-stars Danielle de Metz (best-remembered as the Italian tourguide in "Gidget Goes to Rome") and John Sutton. Things get a lot more gruesome and darker in THE CURSE OF THE FLY, filmed in 1965. Andre Delambre's grandson Martin (George Baker) wants to carry on the family legacy, but the arrival of his lovely new wife Pat (Carole Gray), who escaped from a psychiatric hospital, complicates everything. In the gloomy Delambre mansion, the deformed victims of "failed experiments" lurk, including Martin's former wife Judith (Mary Manson), and it's only a matter of time before Pat discovers the whole sickening truth... Filmed on location in England (hence it's British stars George Baker and Carole Gray), CURSE OF THE FLY also features Brian Donlevy, Rachel Kempson, and Michael Graham. Burt Kwouk and Yvette Rees ("Witchcraft") are the Delambre's Asian house-servants, with the laughable names of Tai and Wan. CURSE OF THE FLY was originally released in a theatrical double bill with "Devils of Darkness", another British horror title co-starring Carole Gray. The bonus fourth disc, entitled "Disc of Horrors", includes a brief ten-minute featurette which touches on all three movies. The 50-minute Biography episode for Vincent Price ("The Versatile Villain") provides an absorbing portrait of a man whose interests and talents ran in many directions. There are also selective photo galleries for each of the three "Fly" movies. The four discs are housed in individual slimline cases, packed together in an attractive slipcover which displays key artwork from all three movies. Each disc is single-layered; the movies themselves are in their correct 2:35:1 widescreen aspect ratio, enhanced for 16:9 displays. This bargain-priced collectors' set is a must for all fans of classic horror.

Stage Door Canteen (B&W)

Stage Door Canteen (B&W)
Stage Door Canteen (1943), directed by Frank Borzage (A Farewell to Arms) in support of the war effort, prefigures Anchors Aweigh and On the Town in depicting the lives of servicemen on leave in the big city. Countless British and American celebrities put in an appearance--everyone from Dame Judith Anderson to Katharine Hepburn, Count Basie to Benny Goodman. The story concerns three soldiers and the female volunteers they fall for at the canteen of the title--a real-life Manhattan nightspot--before shipping out for points unknown. While the largely unknown principals (Cheryl Walker, William Terry, etc.) handle the drama and romance, bigger stars like Harpo Marx and Tallulah Bankhead take care of the comedy and scene-stealing supporting bits. This historical document was most commonly shown in an edited-for-TV 93-minute version but is now available again in its original--more entertaining--132-minute length. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Customer Review: GREAT WAR-TIME ENTERTAINMENT
In the 1940's there were two Canteens...the Hollywood Canteen in California and the STage Door Canteen in New York, set-up to entertain serviceman who were getting ready to go to war or who were on leave. The big attraction was that many Hollywood stars would work at the two establishments doing everything from bussing tables to dancing with the servicemen. Stage Door Canteen does a pretty good job of capturing the feel of the real establishment. One can only guess at the wide-eyed wonder these young men had when people like Bette DAvis and John Garfield waited on them. The thin plot follows a group of serviceman who are about to be shipped off to fight. And that's really about it. They were not setting out to make a dramatic classic. This was strictly a morale booster film, loaded with celebrities. Among the guest stars are: Ralph Bellamy, Edgar Bergen, Helen Hayes, katherine Hepburn, Harpo Marx, George Raft, and Johnny Weissmuller as well as the orchestras of Count Basie, Benny Goodman, and Kay Kyser. It's sort of like a 1940's version of "We are the World" with all these celebs joining together for a great cause. Fabulous entertainment!
Customer Review: Avoid DVDs from Image Entertainment
I ordered STAGE DOOR CANTEEN on May 28. I have yet to receive a DVD! It has not yet shipped. This is irresponsible business dealing.

Where Angels Fear to Tread

Where Angels Fear to Tread
On a journey to Tuscany with her young friend and traveling companion Caroline Abbott, widowed Lilia Herriton falls in love with both Italy and a handsome Italian much younger than herself, and decides to stay. Furious, her dead husband's family send Lilia's brother-in-law to Italy to prevent a misalliance, but he arrives too late. Lilia marries the Italian and in due course becomes pregnant again. When she dies giving birth to a son, the Herritons learn that Lilia's one-time traveling companion, Caroline Abbott, wishes to travel to Italy once again, this time to save the infant boy from an uncivilized life. Not wanting to be outdone -- or considered any less moral or concerned than Caroline for the child's welfare-- Lilia's in-laws try to take the lead in traveling to Italy. In the public eye, they make it known that it is both their right and their duty to travel to Monteriano to obtain custody of the infant so that he can be raised as an Englishman. Secretly, though, they have no regard for the child.

Customer Review: J.M. Barrie is bested yet again!
Alas, I've never much adored the stage version, nor that oafish Disney cartoon with the simpish "you can fly" song playing over and over. And to be perfectly honest, this film was a bit overproduced and digitized much for my taste, but my seven year old cousin LOVED it! And LOVED this Darling (he he) adaptation. Scout Driggs prose stylings and gentle narration beg to be read aloud to the wide-eyed, youthless... uh... youth in every household across the great American continent. Happy thoughts come to those who read!

Dirty Duck (Unrated)

Dirty Duck (Unrated)
Customer Review: What the hell?
I got this out of curiosity... and all I can think after seeing this is... what the hell was that all about. Overall it's really just pointless and odd... and this is coming from someone that likes oddball movies like Cool World and Wizards. The animation reminds me of old cartoons that where made sometime in the 40s... mabe not... it's not that good. If you have ever seen the realy old show Crusader Rabbit you might have an idea of how the animation is... and that had the excuse of being the first animated show for TV, so the animation couldn't be good, it wasn't in the budget since TV never got that kind of money. This movie don't have that excuse Beware this buy, Friz is better, ether of them, this is just horrid all around.
Customer Review: Why bother?
The best thing about this sad excuse for an underground seventies cartoon is that no one is forcing you to watch it. I mean it's not like a scene from Clockwork Orange where the viewer is strapped in and their eyes propped open with coat hangers. That's the best thing about it. There are a few (maybe four even) moments of humor so crude it's funny but most of it isn't. So much for the movie's good points. The animation is not only amateur it's deliberately lame which would make it a good match for the meandering/scattered writing that tries to pass as plot if such a match up could actually be thought of as desirable. It isn't! The combination teams up to make anyone wonder why they are subjecting themselves to this poorly animated passing of gas. Tiny bits of the musical soundtrack actually might have been turned into something (not sure what) if anyone associated with this project gave a damn which obviously no one did. A couple of reviewers have suggested smoking something fairly pungent before watching Dirty Duck but I'd suggest a much more powerful narcotic. Maybe a half pan of brownies but a proper antidote for this boring animated mess probably lay somewhere in the truly psychedelic category. If you have too much respect for your body to do that then show your mind the same and don't bother with this movie.

Little Dorrit (BBC Dramatization)

Little Dorrit (BBC Dramatization)
This BBC Radio 4 dramatization starring Sir Ian McKellen recreates the author's mid-19th-Century London. Drawing upon his own father's imprisonment in Marshalsea Debtors' Prison, Dickens placed the institution firmly in the heart of the novel when telling the story of Amy Dorrit. The youngest child of debtor William Dorrit, Amy is born in the Marshalsea prison. She and her father are befriended by Arthur Clennam, whose mother employs "little Dorrit" as a seamstress. The fortunes of the Dorrits undergo an extreme change when Williams inherits a fortune, and the family move to Italy. Back in England, Arthur Clennam finds himself the victim of a massive fraud and ends up in Marshalsea. There he is found by Little Dorrit, whose fortune has had no effect on her generosity and humility. Arthur realizes that she loves him, but it is not until the Dorrit fortune is lost that the two of them can be united at last. Peopled with Dickens' usual host of memorable characters, this mix of satire and genuine sentiment has made this one of his best-loved works.

Customer Review: Bad dubbing!
The voice dubbing on the film is horrific. It's like watching a bad karate movie. There mouths are moving, but the words don't come out until a few seconds later.
Customer Review: Pippy is still great after all these years!
I remember watching Pippy Longstocking as a young girl and loving it. Now my 4 and 5 year old love her too. It is funny to realize that it is dubbed in English, didn't notice that as a child and my kids haven't noticed it either. My husband and I got a kick out of it the first time we watched it as adults. Doesn't take away from the movie.

Chocolat

Chocolat
Greeted as "an amazement of riches ... few readers will be able to resist" by The New York Times, Chocolat is an enchanting novel about a small French town turned upside down by the arrival of a bewitching chocolate confectioner, Vianne Rocher, and her spirited young daughter.
Customer Review: Fantastic, Mouth-Watering
Chocolat / 0-141-00018-X Chocolat is easily one of my favorite novels - the escapism is fantastic, the food descriptions are mouth-watering, the plot and prose are beautiful. I can hardly believe that a novel so richly packed with meaning could be so relatively short. Harris' prose here is at its finest, as we follow the narratives of Vianne, the free-spirited chocolate-creating witch, and Reynaud, the guilt-stricken oppressive village priest. Each narrative is uniquely told, with personality quirks inherent to each, and each narrative can be subtly imperfect - Reynaud slowly descends into madness, as does his precise narrative; Vianne's fear of weakness and displacement causes her to falsely claim that she never cries, causes her to state a yearning to move on which does not exist, and causes her to doubt her own importance to her lover Roux - creating a tantalizing problem for the reader: do we believe Vianne or do we believe Roux and his actions? The problem is - like Vianne's chocolates - delicate and bitter-sweet, with possibilities abounding on either side. Although this is a novel featuring a single mother, and a non-Christian at that, I do not believe that this novel represents an attack on any particular way of life. Vianne states, early on, that the goal of life is "to be happy" (without, of course, hurting others in the process). Though the antagonist is a priest, it is clear that he has his own individual demons, and it is *not* his office within the church which makes him evil. Several villagers are held up as examples of genuine Christians who do not flaunt their belief purely for power or social standing. Nor is this some kind of screed against men - Vianne, Josephine, and Armande are aided time and again by kind, emotionally strong men who value these women for their strength of character. Indeed, if I were to call this style of writing anything, I would call it 'humanist' - it is clear that Vianne is no less a valuable person for being a female or for being a witch; no less is Guillaume a valuable person for being a male or for being a Christian. All these people, Harris seems to be saying, are people and thus deserve love and a little bit of kindness in their life and, she suggests, the right and privilege to decide when enough is enough. (Whether or not the reader agrees is left gently to the reader - Harris is not preachy or didactic.) I highly recommend this book for anyone - this is a book that spans gender, religion, age, and country. (Note: Chocolat is best enjoyed with a tall glass of milk and dark chocolate truffles near at hand!)
Customer Review: Chocolate Devilish Good
I had seen the movie and loved it. Now that I have read the book, I am even more a fan of Joanne Harris. I cannot wait to get other books. This read is not a quick one, if you take the time to get into all the detail of the people, and the lay of the town. It draws in at the first sentence. to the very end, you want to know more about the citizens of Lansquenet and Vianne and Anouk. We know from preview of Ms. Harris' book, that they move on, yet you want more of the inhabitents of the town. Recommend it highly vs the movie, yet the movie ( bought the Penguin release with movie cover) will grab you also.

Customer Review: Easy Rider
I really was not impressed with this movie. It had some funny parts but was very drawn out. The acting was good just boring.
Customer Review: Wish I could give it a 1/4 star
I just finished watching this loser movie....I'm curious...in whatever warped need that Dennis Hopper had to produce a counterculture film,,why did the film need to be so incredibly boring...Hoppers' character was negative, and frankly he never shut up......totally annoying,,,,their death at the end was pointless, just like the entire film...I get the point of the film....regardless...I want my two hours back....

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Stanley Kramer's sprawling 1963 comedy about a search for buried treasure by at least a dozen people--all played by well-known entertainers of their day--is the kind of mass comedy that Hollywood hasn't made in many years. (Another example from around the same time is Blake Edwards's The Great Race.) After a number of strangers (including Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Sid Caesar, Phil Silvers, and others) witness a dying stranger (Jimmy Durante) identify the location of hidden money, a conflict-ridden hunt begins, watched over carefully by a suspicious cop (Spencer Tracy). The ensuing two and a half hours of mayhem has its ups and downs--some bits and performers are certainly funnier than others. But Kramer, who is better known for socially conscious, serious cinema (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?), is in a mood for broad comic characterization, and some of his jokes are so intentionally obvious (Durante literally kicks a bucket when he dies), they'd have a place in Airplane! Watch for lots of cameo appearances, including Jerry Lewis (who had called Kramer and asked him why he hadn't been invited to participate). --Tom Keogh

Classic Comedies Collection (Bringing Up Baby / The Philadelphia Story Two-Disc Special Edition / Dinner at Eight / Libeled Lady / Stage Door / To Be or Not to Be)

Classic Comedies Collection (Bringing Up Baby / The Philadelphia Story Two-Disc Special Edition / Dinner at Eight / Libeled Lady / Stage Door / To Be or Not to Be)
"The love impulse in man," says a psychiatrist in Bringing Up Baby, "frequently reveals itself in terms of conflict." That's for sure. For a primer on the rules and regulations of the classic screwball comedy, which throws love and conflict into close proximity, look no further. A straight-laced paleontologist (Cary Grant) loses a dinosaur bone to a dog belonging to free-spirited heiress Katharine Hepburn. In trying to retrieve said bone, Grant is drawn into the vortex surrounding the delicious Hepburn, which becomes a flirtatious pas de deux that will transform both of them. Director Howard Hawks plays the complications as a breathless escalation of their "love impulse," yet the movie is nonetheless romantic for all its speed. (Hawks's His Girl Friday, also with Grant, goes even faster.) Grant and Hepburn are a match made in movie heaven, in sync with each other throughout. Not a great box-office success when first released, Bringing Up Baby has since taken its place as a high-water mark of the screwball form, and it was used as a model for Peter Bogdanovich's What's Up, Doc?

Re-creating the role she originated in Philip Barry's wickedly witty Broadway play, Katharine Hepburn stars as the spoiled and snobby socialite Tracy Lord in The Philadelphia Story, one of the great romantic comedies from the golden age of MGM studios. Applying her impossibly high ideals to everyone but herself, Tracy is about to marry a stuffy executive when her congenial ex-husband (Cary Grant), arrives to protect his former father-in-law from a potentially scandalous tabloid exposé. In an Oscar-winning role, James Stewart is the scandal reporter who falls for Tracy as her wedding day arrives, throwing her into a dizzying state of premarital jitters. Who will join Tracy at the altar? Snappy dialogue flows like sparkling wine under the sophisticated direction of George Cukor in this film that turned the tide of Hepburn's career from "box-office poison" to glamorous Hollywood star.

MGM originally promoted Dinner at Eight by touting the "all-star cast," but this is no run-of-the-mill omnibus picture. On the contrary, rather than cramming as many big names as possible into a lumbering vehicle, the movie's impeccably crafted script (by Edna Ferber and Herman J. Mankiewicz) and direction (by George Cukor) gave some immortal screen luminaries a chance to shine. For sheer bravery, John Barrymore's achingly poignant performance as Larry Renault, a washed-up matinee idol who has "outlived everything but his vanity," is unmatched. Barrymore's brother, Lionel, is equally touching as shipping magnate Oliver Jordan. Oliver vainly tries to save his family's century-old firm, at the same time hiding his financial and health troubles from his wife, Millicent, played to hysterical perfection by Billie Burke. The Great Depression is presented in microcosm as Millicent frets about throwing the ultimate society dinner, oblivious to the world tumbling down around her. She is forced to invite to her precious party such undesirables as crass financier Dan Packard ("He smells Oklahoma!"). Even worse in Millicent's eyes than Packard (Wallace Beery, doing an impressive steamroller imitation) is his social-climbing wife, Kitty (Jean Harlow, never funnier). Be sure to watch for Harlow's brief encounter with Marie Dressler, who brings an extraordinary winking wisdom to the role of aging star Carlotta Vance. As the two enter the dining room in the film's final scene, Harlow makes an offhand remark that elicits from Dressler one of the great screen double takes of all time. Like so much of Dinner at Eight, the moment is priceless.

Newspaper comedy doesn't seem like an MGM genre--ink-stained wretches don't go with Adrian gowns and white deco furniture--but Jack Conway, the designated bull in the Metro china shop (Boom Town, Too Hot to Handle) does what he can to bring some dash and flair to Libeled Lady's wildly complicated script. Spencer Tracy is the tough city editor who goes to some spectacular extremes when socialite Myrna Loy files a $5 million libel suit against his paper for calling her a notorious home-wrecker; he hires celebrated ladies' man William Powell to seduce Loy and asks his long-suffering fiancée, Jean Harlow, to marry Powell temporarily so she can play the wronged wife when Loy and Powell are discovered together. The couples crisscross, with frenetic and not entirely unpredictable results, but much of the pleasure here lies in seeing these iconic stars being so thoroughly themselves. The dialogue strains for champagne wit, but the movie's most memorable moment is pure, rotgut slapstick--Powell's bout with an unruly fly-fishing rod.

This one's all about the ladies. In Stage Door, an absolutely terrific 1937 gem, a Manhattan boardinghouse for aspiring actresses houses an amazing roster of golden-era performers--some of whom, like their characters, were just breaking in. It's hard to say who's in best form here: Katharine Hepburn in blueblood mode, Ginger Rogers streetwise, Andrea Leeds suffering, Lucille Ball and Ann Miller impossibly young, and Eve Arden being, well, splendidly Eve Ardenish. The sassy comedy and sober life lessons are wonderfully mixed by the underrated director Gregory La Cava (My Man Godfrey), who captures the brashness of '30s female chatter in a much pleasanter way than the more famous The Women. Hepburn's sublime attempts to wrestle with the line about calla lilies being in bloom will make you smile long after the movie's over.
Customer Review: great movies... overpriced
i put it in my cart. shortly after, it went from $38 to $69. Just a way to squeeze a few more bucks out of diehard fans of this very old material, long since paid for. look for less expensive collections, they're out there. Customer Review: Classic Cartoons are worth the price
I purchased the Disney Classic Cartoon Favorites Vol. 12 in order to preserve these classics so that my children can one day enjoy them. These old cartoons were readily available on Television during my childhood, but now you will not see them unless you buy or rent the DVD's. The quality of the movies has been enhanced and preserved for years of viewing ability and these classics are full of sentimental favorites.

Midnight (Universal Cinema Classics)

Midnight (Universal Cinema Classics)
Although Hollywood's golden year of 1939 is best remembered for Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz, it was also a banner year for sophisticated screen comedy, and Mitchell Leisen's Midnight is a deliciously prime example. Screenwriters Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett were in peak form when they concocted this smooth confection about Eve Peabody (Claudette Colbert), an American showgirl in Paris who is out of work, money, and luck when a handsome cabbie (Don Ameche) offers to drive her around the City of Light to search for employment as a nightclub chanteuse. Nobody's hiring, but Eve has a better plan: posing as a Hungarian countess, she smuggles her way into Parisian high society and suddenly finds herself in the lap of luxury, commissioned by a wealthy aristocrat (John Barrymore) to seduce a French playboy (Francis Lederer) away from Barrymore's not-so-loyal wife (Mary Astor). While Eve is living it up at the Ritz Hotel and enjoying trips to Versailles, Ameche's on a mission to find her and declare his true love.

Class distinction, infidelity, false identity... these were daring ingredients for a 1939 comedy, and Midnight (a casebook display of Paramount's shimmering studio style of the '30s) is as fresh today as it was when first released. The silky perfection of the Wilder-Brackett screenplay is expertly served by Leisen (a director who deserves ranking with Ernst Lubitsch and Preston Sturges), and Colbert is merely the brightest star in a flawless cast of screwball veterans. Poking fun at the elite was a Wilder-Brackett specialty, and Barrymore is particularly savvy to the material, giving a performance that's simultaneously sly, desperate, and hilariously inspired. The plot is so elegantly executed that Midnight makes most comedies of later decades look pale in comparison. Gone are the days, it seems, when sophistication, wit, and good taste were an integral part of Hollywood comedy. Midnight offers all of those qualities in abundance, making it a perfect antidote to the crudeness that dominates mainstream comedy at the turn of the millennium. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: Midnight
This is a great classic movie. John Barrymore steals the show. Very enjoyable. I highly recommend this movie to all. Don Ameche, Claudette Colbert, Mary Astor and John Barrymore.
Customer Review: Favorite movie of all time
I was thrilled when Amazon began selling this one. I agree with the others - I've shown it to a few people who are dead set against any movie made before 1960, and they loved it.

Buster Keaton: Vol. 1-2

Buster Keaton: Vol. 1-2
Buster Keaton revisits his familiar persona of a spoiled society dandy thrown into the surreal world. Young millionaire Rollo Treadway (the sap in the family tree, according to a title card) embarks on a long voyage to nurse his broken heart when his lady love, Kathryn McGuire, turns down his proposal of marriage. Of course he winds up on the wrong dock and boards a derelict ship, which (as luck would have it) McGuire has also boarded. Foreign spies set the ship adrift on the high seas, stranding the pampered heirs, who must now fend for themselves. Keaton indulges in his love of Rube Goldberg contraptions with an elaborate jungle of levers and hatches that turns a giant galley into a veritable automat and dives into 20th-century technology when he dons a diving suit for a hilarious underwater sequence. McGuire makes a marvelous comic partner for Keaton, a gifted physical comedian and a spunky love interest, while the ship plays straight man to their pratfalls and gags, practically coming alive like a haunted house in their first terrified night aboard. The match between man and massive machine proved so successful that Keaton returned to the concept for his two greatest comedies, The General and Steamboat Bill Jr. Also featured are a pair of appropriately aquatic shorts: The Boat, in which Buster packs his family into a leaky houseboat, and The Love Nest, which pits castaway Buster against a despotic captain. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Review: Better Than The General
I must admit that I found the Navigator superior in yuks and charm to The General made by Keaton three years later. The General usually gets the accolades, but I disagree. There is wonderful romantic-comic chemistry between Kathryn McGuire and Buster as they share hardship stranded on the ship, The Navigator. He's a rich guy sans servants and she's the rich girl; sans daddy and servants. Together they learn how to cook and keep from drowning in the adventure of their lives. The story builds as they learn how to open cans of food, swim , and avoid a tropical village of cannibals while adrift all alone on an old freighter in the middle of the Pacific. A wonderful script really. No words are needed.
Customer Review: The Navigator
This is the first Buster Keaton film I ever saw and instilled my liking for his comedies. With "The General", it is one of the two of his better films, each of which have an individual character. His comedies are arguably as good as, if not better, than those of Charlie Chaplin, which tend to introduce elements of pathos. Buster Keaton, in each film, has novel ideas and his acrobatics are marvellous.

Customer Review: 50 SCI FI MOVIES
This is a truly awful presentation of some great old films. These are such bad quality you can see the pixalation and the films actually flicker because they are so badly reproduced. Essential Classics - Musicals (My Fair Lady / Singin' in the Rain / Gigi)
Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 05/13/2008
Customer Review: Musical DVD review
I must have been sentimental when I ordered this. Wanting to share some "good old classics" with my preteen children, I was excited to view the three musicals with them. Gigi should be banned for girls - and boys, as a matter of fact (what were they thinking??); My Fair Lady is entertaining and a classic but not a favorite with my 6-year-old. The only one I truly want to keep and see again is "Singing in the Rain", a story with some value - and the approval of all my kids.
Customer Review: Hollywood Musicals of the 50's
Very disappointing. We didn't even watch all of it.......would return for a refund if I could. It's nothing but advertisements of the movies, lots of print (telling it's in what kind of color, extravaganza, etc.) Boring! It had VERY brief segments from different movies. I thought there would be some complete movies, not just segments. The cover even shows 6 specific movies!!
